Chapter Three: At the Dance
January 20, 2020
There were many things I had to do this week before the actual day of the dance. My main obstacle was convincing my parents to let me go. I told them Tuesday about the dance and that I had a date to go. They didn't really respond. They just gave me a strange look and told me that I was grounded.
"Joan, I know this dance means a lot to you and you actually have a date, which is great, but . . . you're grounded." Buffy reminded me.
"I know, mom!" I protested. "But, you didn't say anything about me not being able to go to a dance. I wasn't even going to go, but Charlie asked me."
"Who's Charlie?" Angel asked.
"He's this guy who just transferred to our school. Almost every girl in the entire school has a crush on him and asked him to the dance. He didn't want to go with them he wanted to go with me." I replied.
"And you just said yes?"
"Yeah. It's not like I barely know him. He's my partner in Chemistry."
"Oh, I see."
"Angel, maybe we should let her go. It's her first dance with a date. All of the other restrictions still apply. Curfew it eleven, as you know, and well...no sex or anything like that." Buffy smiled.
"Ewww....I can't believe you would even think I would want to do that." I laughed and she laughed with me.
"It isn't a joke. We don't even know this Charlie boy. I'd have to meet him and make sure he isn't bad." Angel glared at me and my mother.
"When he comes to pick me up on Friday I'll bring him inside and you don't think he's good enough for me then I won't go." I looked at him hoping he would agree.
"Fine."
"Thank you so much, dad!" I gave him a big hug. "Oh and you do know that I need a dress to wear."
He stared at me for a moment before he responded. "What's wrong with the ones you already have?"
"You did not just ask her that." Buffy looked at Angel.
"I did too." He replied and obviously didn't understand what was so wrong with wearing and old dress to the dance.
"She so needs a new one. You never wear and old dress to a dance. But hey, if you're all against it I'll buy it myself."
"No, no. I'll pay for it. Fine, Joan. You can go to the dance and get a new dress for it."
"Just make sure you are back by eleven."
"Got it." I responded. I was so excited about going to my first dance. It was also kind of interesting to see my parents arguing about buying me a new dress. So, the point is that I got a new dress and was actually aloud to go. All I had to do then was wait until Friday.
Don't worry though, I didn't forget about the threat Kathy gave to me. I just didn't care. Now I realize that I should've taken it a little more seriously. Friday soon approached and before I knew it Charlie was at the door to pick me up.
He has told me that he would be at my house to pick me up around seven. He was early though. About fifteen minutes early. I was still in my bath robe putting on my makeup and making sure that my hair was just right. I felt bad that he had to wait. Especially since my parents were down there probably asking him all kinds of questions.
I hurried to finish my hair and makeup and then I put on my dress. As I was walked down the stairs Charlie's eyes went wide with surprise. I still don't think he got over how nice I looked. I still don't think the whole school got over it.
Anyway, I walked down the stairs and my dad was also surprised. Dads are always like that though. They get all upset when their 'little girls' grow up and get cleavage. They also get upset when they start getting boyfriends, but that's a whole other story.
"You look great sweetie." Buffy smiled.
"Yeah...um...great." Angel tried to hide his astonishment, but it didn't really work.
"Thanks, guys." I replied as I walked down the last stair. Charlie was waiting for me with flowers. Roses to be exact. A dozen of red roses.
"You're really beautiful." Charlie handed me the roses. "So much better than any other girl I could've taken to the dance."
"You are too. I mean you look nice in that suit. Cleaned up really nicely." I smiled and we both blushed a little.
"You two have fun at the dance." Buffy said as she quickly took our picture.
"Yeah and remember..." My dad wasn't able to finish his sentence. I thought I would be the one to finish it, but it was Charlie.
"Don't worry, sir. I will make sure Joan is back by eleven." He smiled, took my hand, and we walked out of the door. Before he shut it behind me I flashed a smile to my parents.
"Bye." I waved, with my free hand, and then Charlie shut the door.
Okay, what's wrong? That's exactly what you're thinking. Nothing, yet. In fact, Charlie had rented us a limo. You would think we were going to the prom or something. Our ride to the dance was nice. Charlie is really a gentlemen. It wasn't until we got to the dance that the trouble started. It wasn't until we ran into Kathy.
"Wow...they went full out on these decorations." Charlie exclaimed as we entered the gym.
"Yeah. I um...agree." There were about twenty five large tables spread out and a D.J. Each table had a bouquet of flowers and streamers hung from the ceiling. In the corner there was a photo booth set up and couples were getting their pictures taken. I looked at Charlie and I looked away. He was staring directly at the photo booth. I hoped he wasn't thinking of getting our picture taken...but he was.
"Hey, look over there. You want to get a picture so that we can remember this night?" He asked.
"I don't know." I looked down at my feet. "I really hate taking pictures.
"Oh, come on! You know you really want to."
"No, I don't."
"Fine. If you don't want to...we won't. I'll go get us some punch." He began to walk off and I sighed. It was not going to work. He was not going to get me to take a picture with him my pretending to be all hurt. Okay, maybe it did.
"Wait...I um...guess I could. I mean I don't want to forget this night. Being here with...an actually date and all." I forced a smile and Charlie took my arm. We slowly walked over to the photo booth and waited in line.
"Okay, kids, stand just like that...closer." The photographer instructed. I blushed a little bit as Charlie and I moved closer together. He put his arms around my waist and smiled. "You too. You need to smiled as well." The photographer was talking to me. I blushed again and smiled. He took a quick picture and then we sat down at a table.
"It wasn't that bad, was it?" Charlie asked.
"No." I quickly stated trying to avoid his eyes. I felt so uncomfortable.
"What is it?" Charlie placed his hand on my shoulder. I stared at his hand and then at his eyes.
"Nothing...I just feel so weird." I replied.
"Weird?"
"Yeah. No offense, but...this is not normal for me. It's not that I don't like you...I just feel weird."
"If you didn't want to go with me, you could've said no."
"But I did want to go with you. Every girl in the school did."
"I bet so." Charlie took his hand off of my shoulder and looked down at the floor. I could tell he felt bad. "I'll go get us some punch." He got up and walked over to the punch table.
I sighed and looked around the gym. New couples were just arriving and there was no sign of Kathy. I was very happy about that. I knew I could handle myself if she did try something, but I didn't feel like starting something. It was my very first dance that I had ever been to with a date. I wanted to enjoy every moment.
Too bad I could only enjoy myself for about five minutes. I looked back up and Kathy was making her way across the gym to me. She had on a black dress with a slit all the way up to her hip, her hair was curled and down, and she had way to much makeup on. She sensed me staring at her and just rolled her eyes.
"You just wish you could look this good." She said sitting down.
"Yeah, but then I'd be a slut." I responded. Kathy looked surprised, but she quickly got the hate back into her eyes.
"You hear alone?"
"No."
"Don't tell me you came here with Charlie."
"I didn't come here with Charlie."
"Good." Just then Charlie walked over and sat down beside of me. He handed me the punch and then looked at Kathy.
"You said you weren't here with him." Kathy cried.
"I said it, but that doesn't mean that I meant it. Of course I'm here with Charlie." I responded moving closer to him. "What are you going to do about it?"
"Kill you."
"Oh, really? You couldn't even hit me if I was right in front of you."
"That's what you think."
"If you're so sure of yourself, then go ahead, kill me." I waited for Kathy to say something, but she just smiled.
"Girls, could you please stop this. It's really annoying." Charlie sipped his punch.
"I don't care. I don't even care if the whole school is here. I will kill you and no one can stop me." Kathy leaned in until she was about nine inches away from my face.
"Oh yeah. You're not going to get caught at all." I started to laugh, but Kathy had had enough. She leaned in even closer to me and her eyes began to glow. I looked more closely at her and realized that she also had a bumpy forehead. She was a vampire. I was really excited about that.
"See?" She asked as she picked me up and threw me on the floor. I quickly got up ready to fight. She cocked her head to the side and looked at me. "You're not scared?" She seemed really confused.
"Nope. I'm Joan, daughter of the slayer. I can stake you right now." I got closer to Kathy and she looked scared.
"Oh. I always wondered what you would taste like."
"Cool. You're not going to come close though." I looked around the gym. Some people had run away and others had stayed. Charlie was standing up and he came over to me.
"What the heck it she?" He asked.
"A vampire." I responded as if it were obvious.
"I don't...what?"
"I don't have time to explain right now. Just...go somewhere else. I don't want you to get hurt."
"You don't want me to get hurt? What about you?"
"I can handle myself." I sighed. He wasn't getting it.
"We'll see about that." Kathy lunged at me and punched me. I fell on the floor again, but got up. Kathy picked her foot up to kick me but I grabbed it and twisted it. Kathy backed up and tried to kick me again. I blocked it and punched her in the jaw.
"I need some wood." I called out to Charlie.
"What?" He still was confused.
"Break off a chair leg...and hurry!" Charlie ran over to nearby chair and broke it. He held the piece of wood in his hand and waited.
I turned around and kicked Kathy twice. I punched her again, but she was ready. She blocked the blow and punched me right in the nose. It busted and I held it with my hand. I couldn't let her win. If I did...I would be dead. I had to keep going. I let go of my nose and punched Kathy in hers. I then did a jump front kick, a round kick, and a side kick. Kathy tripped and fell down.
"Charlie!" I called to him as I straddled Kathy. There was fear in her eyes. She knew I was about to stake her. Charlie threw me the chair leg and I shoved it through Kathy's heart. She burst into dust and everyone stared at me.
