CHILLING IN THE DAYLIGHT

“What’s up?” Benny asked.
“Nothing, Benny. Just working out, making sure that everything is still good for slayage,” Faith answered.
“Ah, is it working?”
“I guess. I didn’t think that I would have so much energy with all of chilling, you know. I didn’t think I would be this edgy.”
“Gotcha. I feel it too. I am edgy. I want something to happen just so that I can out and patrol, maybe even kill a demon or two,” Benny replied.
“Right on. Know where any are that we can play with?” Faith questioned.
“I could think of a few, but what about Buffy and Kennedy?”
“Don’t forget the rest of the scooby gang; they must be itching for some, too.”
“I am not sure that they care about that kind of stuff. Me and you, we’re different. We fight to fight. You know, we were raised with the destiny thing,” Benny replied, “And, I am guessing that Buffy was more or less thrust into the job.”
“Yeah, well, that happens in our line of work,” Faith stated.
“What’s Kennedy’s deal? What is her story?”
“Don’t know. She became a slayer like the rest when Will did that spell that made all potentials slayers. She was some sort of rich girl that got a watcher young.”
“Ah, yes, so all the prep schools she was attending weren’t real prep schools but watcher academy. Figures they would start that after me. Makes sense with the First coming and all. I can just see the watchers council doing this. Let’s make a school for potentials and train them to be slayers. This way they could dispatch the next one at a moments notice any where in the world. God, they are always playing the slayers’ minds. Destiny, my ass, they were basically breeding us at these schools.”
“Seems like a good plan on their part, but bad for the slayer. I can see why she was so happy to join the team in Sunnydale. She was tired of all the testing at Watcher U. I can feel that,” Faith responded.
“Honestly, I want an apocalypse. I want something to fight.”
“It makes it easier to be a slayer,” Faith stated.
“Totally, it makes it more…”
“Reasonable,” Kennedy finished walking up to them in the yard.
“Why hello there, little slayer girl,” Faith quipped.
“So what are you two planning?” Kennedy inquired.
“Nothing, just talking,” Benny answered.
“About?” Kennedy probed.
“Growing up slayer,” Faith answered.
“Funny. No, really, what were you talking about?” Kennedy asked.
“Seriously, being a slayer and growing up a slayer,” Benny replied.
“Right,” Kennedy started, “So, what’s the deal with that then?”
“Hard. I’m sure that you know that, being that you were basically reared at some sort of Watcher U. How’s that working for you, now?” Benny inquired.
“What the hell is that supposed to mean?” Kennedy questioned.
“Well, let’s see. You’re from a posh family in New York and turn out to be a potential, spellified into a slayer due to your watcher sending you to the late and cratered Sunny-d. So, I am guessing that you were taking in by some Watchers at some prep school run by them. Something like a scholarship to some old British like prep school some where in upstate New York,” Benny stated knowingly, “Am I close?”
“So what?” Kennedy quipped back at her.
“Nothing, just making a comment,” Benny answered.
“We are just talking about how a slayer is taught to be a slayer affects the way that they act when they go out slaying,” Faith replied.
“And, what did you determine in your discussion?” Kennedy questioned.
“That training and upbringing are important to a slayer’s development. Buffy had a support group. Faith had nothing and no one really but a watcher and then that crazy mayor guy. I lost everything, my family, my watcher, and my identity. You were taken and given a destiny. It makes us fight for different reasons,” Benny stated.
“So what is your reason?” Kennedy inquired.
“Mine is just to kick ass. I like kicking ass. I am good at it and it is my job,” Faith answered, “Besides I am the bad girl and it’s my th-a-ng.”
“For me, it is destiny. I was handed this by my mother’s family. It was something that got my mind off of my brother and everything. When I am out doing the slayer thing, I am fighting for something my brother never got: a future,” Benny replied, “So, what it is your reason for the whole slayage thing?”
“I am for the whole destiny thing. I think it is mostly because I was raised as you said in Watcher U. I was raised to be a slayer. It is really all I know. I have never thought about being anything but a slayer. I guess that is my motivation,” Kennedy said.
“I get that. I totally get that. I kinda follow that philosphy as well,” Benny stated, “That was basically my motivation, too. I was basically raised by Albert.”

“I wonder what they are talking about out there,” Willow said drinking from a cup, “Faith and Benny have been out there since after breakfast.”
“Who knows? But, when did Kennedy go out there?” Buffy asked.
“What?” Willow asked, “Kennedy’s out there?”
“Yeah, she’s been out there with them for about an hour. It looks like they are swapping slayer stories and battle scars,” Xander added.
“I wonder if I should go out there,” Buffy pondered out loud.
“You could but then what would we do?” Willow asked.
“Besides I think that Benny is a good thing for Faith. She seems to have actually made a friend. I think that we could actually try and be happy here, maybe,” Buffy said.
“Happy? Buffy are we going to stay? I though we were all about closing the hell mouth thing?” Willow questioned.
“I am. But, it couldn’t hurt to hang out for awhile. Dawnie needs a place to go to school. I am not sure that Giles is up to be a tutor on the run. I mean she needs a place to sit and be in school, not following me around as a watcher-in-training with Giles,” Buffy replied, chugging down some tea.
“What’s wrong with her being a watcher? She has seen too much not to fight in some aspect, you know?” Willow asked.
“I know, and I wish she hadn’t, but she has. I think that we should settle and Giles is tired and wants to go back to England. I would like to be able to make him happy again. He has done so much for me, I want to do something for him,” Buffy said.
“I know,” Willow said, “But, what about a place for us to stay? We can’t stay with Benny forever. I don’t want to impose on her anymore. I mean, she did say that we could stay only one night here…remember?”
“Yeah, but she wanted us to wait so that we could all talk together when her roommate gets home. Where are going after that?”
“I could go look for something. I still have a little saved up to put down on something as long as my credit cards still work,” Xander stated.
“Xander, I couldn’t ask you to do that, but you’re right. We do need some place to settle down and set up shop. I hate patrolling out of that school bus,” Buffy replied.
“Buffy, it isn’t whether you want me to or not, I want to. I will get us a place to work out of and have as a home base. I’ll even let you and Will do all the decorating for it. I mean, you know, make it homey like,” Xander answered.
“Well, thanks there Xander,” Willow responded.
“Well?” Xander questioned.
“I guess we really should. What do we need? Like a five bedroom house or bigger? Damn, I never realized how much room we would actually need if we were all together,” Buffy answered.
“FIVE. Five rooms…for who? One for you Buffy, one for Will and Kennedy, one for me, and one for Faith and one for … damn, you’re right, we would need like a huge house,” Xander replied.

“So, what should we do now?” Kennedy asked.
“I dunno, I kinda wanna go and work out. I need to burn off some energy.”
“I feel ya, B.” Faith answered.
“So, let’s see if Buffy wants to go, and let’s go,” Benny replied.
“Buffy, go to the gym…I am not sure that will happen,” Kennedy stated.
“Why not? I know she is to the whole martial arts and yoga thing,” Faith added.
“That is what I meant; I got a gym down town. I own part of a dojo and gym studio. It is kinda a side thing that Albert and Emma got me into when I was training. I bought it a couple years ago. It just became a good investment,” Benny explained.
“How good of an investment?” Faith asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Very good that is all I will say,” Benny answered.
“Well, that says a lot,” Kennedy replied.
“I’ll go see if Buffy wants to go with us,” Benny stated walking away from the rest of them. She smiled as she walked into the house. Benny knew that was making the slayers outside crazy because they didn’t know anything really about her. Benny still wasn’t sure how much of her life she was willing to tell them.
As Benny walked in, she saw Buffy, Xander, and Willow sitting around the kitchen table talking to each other. They stopped talking and looked over at Benny.
“What’s up, Benny?” Buffy questioned.
“Well, we were talking outside and we were wondering if you wanted to come with us to my gym and work out. We are all kinda worked up and wanted to work it all out, just wondering if you wanted to tag along. Will, you and Xander can come as well, if you all want,” Benny stated while walking over to the fridge and grabbing a bottle of water. She stood near the fridge and took a sip out of the bottle.
“Gym?” Will asked, “What gym?”
“Just a place I go to work out every now and again,” Benny replied, taking another sip, and continued, “Plus, I think there something there you might be interested in once you see it.”
“Like what?” Will asked.
“You’ll see it if you go. Just be ready in about half an hour, if you are going. Will, I think I have some friends that you should meet,” Benny answered.
“Well, that sounds like some great muscular fun. Count me in. Gyms, girls and sweat, I am so there. I can watch with my good eye,” Xander quipped.
They all laughed. It was nice to see them all smile. Benny knew that they were all about to pop from the pressure and the waiting. It was a matter of time before the evil would strike, and probably tonight after the sun went down. Benny knew that they would have to blow off some steam and try to relax before sunset.
“Sounds cool. I don’t see why we don’t take some time off,” Buffy replied.
“Cool, just be ready in half an hour. Wear loose clothes, I plan on giving y’all a work out,” Benny answered stepping out the kitchen door.
Kennedy looked up and asked, “Well?”
“They’re going with us. Be ready in half an hour,” Benny stated.

“Welcome to my gym,” Benny said unlocking the door and letting them walk past her into the warehouse sized gymnasium. She walked past them all to a set of light switches and turned on the lights.
Lights flickered and burned on bright. Benny walked across a carpeted floor to a door, opened it and turned on some more lights.
“In here, is a ball court. Over there, is the weight room and stuff. Through here are the locker rooms. Right now, you’re in my dojo. You can do what you like while here. I am going upstairs for awhile. Please stay here. Everything here is at your disposal,” Benny stated walking toward a door in the back of the room marked “STAIRS” before she turned back to Willow, “Will, you might want to come with me.”
“Sure, Benny,” Willow responded.
“Hey, Benny, can I talk to you a minute?” Faith asked.
“Sure, give some time upstairs with Will and then I’ll come find you, okay?”
“Works for me,” Faith answered.
Buffy looked around the dojo and found what she was looking for: a bo staff. She picked it up and started twirling it around in figure eights.
“Come on, Faith, let’s spar a little,” Buffy said.
“B, you sure your up to it. I think I beat you last time we decided that we had to fight. I wouldn’t want to hurt your feelings or nothing,” Faith replied.
“Right,” Buffy answered.
“Mind if I watch this. It might be interesting to see two slayers go at it. Maybe I could pick up on some pointers,” Kennedy stated.
“Come on, kid, watch and learn,” Faith replied cockily.
Buffy and Faith entered the ring, while Xander and Kennedy sat against the wall. Buffy bowed to Faith, who gave Buffy a casual nod. They took two steps back from each other and stepped into defensive stances.
“Come on, B. You first,” Faith baited.
“Oh, no, been there, done that, died twice, and got the t-shirt,” Buffy replied.
They circled before Faith took a step forward and punched towards Buffy. Buffy in turn, stepped back, blocked and countered Faith’s punch with her own. Fists and arms began to fly and move about the ring. Blocks were done to stop fists and feet from connecting with their supposed targets. Both competitors took a few hits every now and then, but they weren’t hard enough to leave marks. They spun around each other, sizing up their next shot like they would have in battle, looking for that weakness that will let them engage the enemy and win the fight. Faith side stepped and offered a ridge hand strike at Buffy’s shoulder. Faith almost connected her strike, but Buffy stepped into it. Buffy grabbed Faith’s offensive arm, pulled it in close to her body, and stepped back further into Faith’s personal body space. Faith had no choice but to lean into the hip throw. Faith, however, countered the throw in mid-throw so that she would land on her feet. Buffy didn’t seem surprised by Faith’s landing, but the elbow that accompanied it back towards her face. Faith smiled. Buffy had taken a hit.
The fight was intense. They were fighting each other but then again they weren’t. They both knew they were using the other as an object to fight and not out of hatred. They were over the hatred, but it had not been forgotten. To each of them, it was a personal fight. They fought out an aggression that begun to consume them since they had both help close the hell mouth in Sunnydale. They were both itching for a good fight and having been denied it, they have turned toward each other. Their love to hate each other relationship had grown into a mutual hatred of evil. They knew that they were both on the same side now.
Suddenly, the tide shifted and Faith slipped. Buffy saw her opening and started to take it. Buffy stepped toward the faltering Faith. Faith instinctively reached out and was greeted by a hand from Buffy. It was not what Faith was looking for. Buffy trapped Faith’s hand against her breast and Buffy leaned her weight forward and then backward, causing Faith to hit the mat and hard. Buffy stepped over the arm that she continued to have trapped against her. She prepared to finish the move that she had so excellently planned, prepared, and positioned into before she realized that this was not the enemy. Buffy let go of Faith’s hand and stepped back.
“What’s wrong, B?” Faith asked.
“Nothing, you okay?” Buffy questioned back.
“Five by Five. Why did you stop? You had the kill. You would have won the fight,” Faith replied.
“Having the kill while on patrol is one thing. In the ring or in training, it is something entirely different. Faith, you know that,” Buffy answered.
“Still checking, though, huh, B?”
“Always will,” Buffy stated walking off. She knelt in the corner of the ring. She rolled her head a few times, trying to clear it, before she began a meditation. It was more of a conscience effort than a necessity. She was afraid to hurt anyone. And now that Faith had decided to place nice, Buffy didn’t think that it would wise to hurt her.
“Whatever, B. I am going to beat the bag,” Faith stated.
“Damn, I didn’t know that Buffy had it in her to go at it like that,” Kennedy said.
“I guess you’ve never seen her fight,” Xander replied.
“I have, but not like that. When it is life and death, it is different. I fight differently when I am out slaying than when I am out just fighting to fight,” Kennedy explained to Xander, “Everything is different when your life is on the line.”
“Trust me I know,” Xander answered, “Buffy never forgets, that is why she stopped. Why don’t you go play with the other slayers for awhile?”
“I’ll go do something if you don’t want company,” Kennedy stated.
“I do but I want to go check out the weights that Benny has here. I want to pump up now that I can’t see everything coming at me. I figure that with just one eye a stronger Xander would be a better Xander,” Xander replied.
“Cool, I’ll go with you,” Kennedy stated following Xander into the weight room.

“Will, up here. I think this is what you were looking for early,” Benny stated.
“What are you talking about?” Willow questioned following Benny upstairs.
“You came here looking for a slayer and the hell mouth and you found it. Somewhere in there, when you realized that I was here too, you wanted to know everything that you could about what happened to Joe and me. That is why I brought you here,” Benny replied opening a door and ushering Willow into the room.
“Wow,” was the only answer that Benny got from Willow as she entered the room. It was a shrine to Joe. It looked like Benny had been collecting anything and everything that she could about the Joseph’s death since it had happened.
“How long…have you…?” Willow questioned in awe.
“Since I found out that demons were real and that I was slayer. I found that it was almost therapeutic to research his death. It became like a mission for me. It became my reason to be a slayer. Most slayers fight because they like being the super hero for the world. I did it to try and find a way for Joe’s death to mean something, to not be in vain.”
“So what did you find out?” Willow asked.
“Nothing. It wasn’t a demon that I can find. I still believe what I told the cops that night is what happened. I know that the man on death row is guilty. But, I still look to see if there are any other possible reason that he died that night,” Benny explained.
“This is one expansive library,” Willow stated, still in shock and walking around the room, “This would make Giles envious.”
“Who is Giles?”
“Buffy’s watcher,” Willow answered.
“Ah, yes, he would like my library here. This is where I research my slayings and other stuff. I come here when I can’t figure out what I am up against. This is where I come to think. This is where I come to pray. I am giving this to you as well,” Benny stated, “But only if you promise to take an offer that I know that you and your friends can’t refuse at this time. I want to give you this. This is something that I owe you for not being there for you when you were younger.”
“What are you talking about?” Willow probed.
“I know what you, Buffy, and Xander were talking about,” Benny stated.
“But, how?”
“Willow, I am also a witch. Part of my witchcraft is premonitions and clairvoyance, but I also have the power to hear conversations after they have happened in any room when I walk into it if I choose to do so. Wait, I know that this can sound misleading and even like an advanced sort of eavesdropping but it isn’t. It isn’t something that I relish in. Sometimes it can be absolutely painful,” Benny explained.
“So what did you hear from our conversation in the kitchen?” Willow asked.
“You all are looking for a place to stay. I want you to stay here.”
“Why? Why would you help us? You don’t even know us. Why, Benny, why?”
“Because I love you, Willow. I never meant to shut you out. I just thought that it was for the best. I didn’t know that you knew that the demons were real when I did it. I didn’t know that you knew a slayer, rather THE SLAYER, when I went into hiding from everyone that I loved. I tried to keep in touch so that you would know where to find me if ever something happened that you would need to,” Benny answered.
“Why did you go into hiding?” Willow probed.
“Because I was afraid. I was afraid that if I was too close to my family that someone would get hurt and I wouldn’t be able to stop it,” Benny stated.
“I know what you mean,” Willow started, acted like she was going to continue and then stopped.
“What do you mean that you know what I mean? What happened to you all, Willow, in Sunnydale? What aren’t you telling me?” Benny questioned.
“I lost someone important me. I became the evil that the slayer hunted, but Buffy was hunting me to stop me. She wanted to help me through my grief. In the end, Xander saved the day, the world, and me. That is one of the reasons that I don’t do too much magic anymore. I can kinda get…addicted to it,” Willow responded.
“Ah, I understand. But, what about making all the potentials slayers? I thought that you did that with your magic and the Slayer Scythe,” Benny stated.
“I did, but it was different. Giles took me to England and made me learn to control it. I was taken into a coven and made to see the error of my ways. I had to learn to harness my power and use it wisely. It was hard because the coven was always afraid that I would turn evil again and that they might have to kill me. They were afraid that if I did go evil that I couldn’t be stopped again,” Willow replied.
“You can and you will, if it does. They didn’t know about me. The road ahead will be difficult and I know that for you, but you will be a good witch and an asset to the slayers of the world,” Benny answered.
“So what is it that you want to give us?” Willow asked.
“Follow me and I’ll show you,” Benny stated grabbing Willow’s hand and dragging her out of the room into the hall, “This room is my office for the gym and stuff. The rest of these rooms are bedrooms…more like dorm rooms. There are three bathrooms on this floor alone.”
Tears filled Willow’s eyes. Willow didn’t know what to say, to think or even to do. Benny knew that they were looking for a place to stay and she had given it to them.
“I want you all to stay here for a while,” Benny said.
“But, Benny, how will we pay you?” Will asked.
“Simple, you will all work for me and help keep the gym running smoothly. I will use your wages as room and board. How does that sound?” Benny questioned.
Willow stood in shock. She let out a whoop of a yell. Willow closed in to Benny and gathered her up into a hug. Will hugged Benny so tight that Benny was beating on Willow’s back to get Will to let her go so that she breathe.
“Sorry. It is just so…so perfect. I know that we all need something good to happen to us. I mean…after Sunnydale…and chasing down whatever Giles thought we could. We searched for slayers everywhere we went and tried to help them understand that they weren’t alone anymore and what their destiny meant to the world. Most of them took it well…but this is…too much…I can’t believe that you would do this,” Will said.
“We’ll see whether or not it is too much. Come on,” Benny stated pulling Willow behind her and back down the stairs to the gym’s first floor.
They walked into the dojo to find Faith tearing the body bag a new ass, Buffy meditating and dreaming of somewhere without demons, and Kennedy and Xander trying to out bench each other in weight room. Benny shook her head. She knew that they would be happy here. The hell mouth was one thing, but happiness in spite of that would make this a new place to call home.
“Guys, Benny has something to tell us all. Come here. You won’t believe it. I still do believe it,” Willow shouted running into the room.
“What?” Buffy said, standing up from her meditation.
“What she give us all new cars?” Faith asked raising her eyebrow and her head at Benny in gesturing nods while smiling at her.
“What is it, Will?” Kennedy questioned.
“Something that we will all be happy about,” Willow stated.
“What, Will? What is it?” Xander probed.
“It means that you won’t have to go out later looking for anything,” Will replied.
“You mean…she is giving us...” Buffy started, “No, you can’t. I mean, Benny, it is too much.”
“What is too much, Buffy? You have died twice to save the world countless times. This is just a gesture of thanks and welcome to the family. Go on, Will, and tell them what they are getting and what it will cost them,” Benny explained.
“Well, Benny has the upstairs set up like some sort of oversized dorm rooms. She is giving us a place to live while we are here,” Willow stated.
Faith looked puzzled and asked, “What’s the catch?”
“No, catch really. We just help out around the gym working during the day or whatever and that is our payment for rent and food,” Willow explained.
“Sounds good, but what about Giles and Dawn? What are we going to do when they get here?” Buffy questioned.
“There are plenty of rooms up there. Plus three bathrooms for us all to share and use. Giles is going to love the place. Benny has a library up there that will make Giles drool. It is perfect. Please don’t say no,” Willow begged.
“How can I? I mean…this is huge. We’ll never be able to repay for this.”
“It’s okay. I understand what being a slayer means. Just helping out around this place and helping with patrolling every so often will be help enough. You have to think of it like I do. I now have three more slayers to help out. That means we can take turns have the night off or something like that,” Benny stated.
“You know that will never happen here with the hell mouth and all,” Faith said.
“I know, but a girl can wish, can’t she?” Benny quipped.
“Hey, I know. Why don’t we start moving in already?” Xander asked.
“Sounds good to me,” Kennedy replied.
“I’ll get you the gym’s van and my personalized car to help you. I don’t think that bus is going to make it to the gym,” Benny stated.
“You’re right. We need wheels,” Buffy said.
“I’ll take care of that. You all just leave me a room to sleep in, preferably near a bathroom. I sometimes have to go at night and stuff,” Xander stated.
“Done!” Willow shouted.
“Well, I guess that settles almost everything, then, doesn’t it?” Benny asked.
“Pretty much,” Buffy stated, “Thank you.”
“Thank you, Buffy. I owe you more than you think,” Benny stated walking towards the door, “My roommate will be here in about hour. Let’s do dinner some where and then we can sit down and talk. I’ll tell you whatever you want to know.”
Benny walked out the front and was followed by Faith, “What is it Faith?”
“She isn’t really your roommate, is she?”
“I don’t see who that is any of your business.”
“Come on, Benny. I am not stupid. Hello, or didn’t you know, your little cousin in there, Will, isn’t just sharing a room with Kennedy.”
“Why? What ever do you mean?”
“Cut the bull shit. I am straight and to the level about everything. What is it about your roommate that makes you so afraid to me who she really is to you?” Faith asked.
“You’re right. She is my lover, my friend, my roommate, and my guardian.”
“So…what’s the story with her?”
“Let’s just say that I went out one night, hell-bent on killing something and got my ass beat. It wasn’t a pleasant experience that I plan on repeating anytime soon. It was so bad that I had to go the hospital for stitches and stuff,” Benny explained.
“And?” Faith egged her on.
“She sewed me up in the ER. It was all Flo’ Nightengale-ish. I made it a habit to visit the ER late a night after a good scrape and tumble, just so she could check me out. Eventually, she thought I was psychotic or something. On her first night off, I took her with me. Since then, I come into the ER and get seen by her, if they’re aren’t any more serious cases ahead of me.”
“Cute.”
“Yeah, she is. But, you have to be nice to her. She was in the military, too, like me. She lost her legs in Bosnia. She’s got two steel rods and a medical degree. It is amazing what military careers can do for you on the outside, you know?”
“Actually, I don’t.”
“Anyway. One thing led to another and we moved in together. Can say that I can complain about anything either,” Benny replied.
“Well, good for you.”
“Just don’t mention the leg thing. Let her tell you. She gets kinda angry if you treat her different because of it.”
“My lips are sealed. Just one question: You wear the pants, right?” Faith asked and was answered by a slap to the back of the head, “What? I am only asking because of the hair cut and all. You just seem to be the big, bad, butch bully lesbian type.”
“How so?”
“Come on, Benny. Hello. First the name: Benny instead of Ada. Then, there is the short spiked dark brown hair opposed to flowing locks like mine. Then, there is the slayer bit. I’ll admit reaching possibly with that one. Then, the gym set up…more like a training academy for more butches to unleashed from. I knew it as soon as I saw you.”
“What are you talking about? Gay-dar? It is a myth, Faith.”
“Then why aren’t you denying it?” Faith questioned.
"Can’t deny something when it is the truth, what’s the point?” Benny asked.
