Part Nine

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Buffy skulked down the stairs from the building's roof. Goliath's plan had her scouting out its inside before the rest of the gang entered. Angel had followed her in and was checking out the other side of the building; everyone else waited outside for their cues.

The Slayer stayed in the shadows, looking for any sign of movement as she moved down the halls. As she passed a room, she thought she heard a soft sound. Stopping dead in her tracks, she leaned closer to the door and listened. She heard it again. It sounded almost like chains clinking together. Buffy slowly turned the handle to the door and cautiously stepped inside.

"The Fairy Queen, I presume?"

Xander looked up along the side of the building. Somewhere inside of it was his friend Buffy. He startled when a squawking came from his side, "Xan?"

Xander picked up the walkie-talkie, "Buffy? Where are you? Are you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine. I know how he's doing it now. He's go the Queen locked up in here and controls the elves through her. He's got her chained up in a room to the back of the building. She doesn't want me to free her. Until we get that book away from him, she's a threat too. I'd say its time to kick some butt. Meet you there?"

Xander could hear the grin that was surely on The Slayer's face at the last remark. He turned to the rest of the gang, "Its clobberin' time!"

Not needing anymore of a clue, Bronx ran toward the door. It exploded inward in a shower of wood. Vinnie and Carlo turned to find a large blue dog-like creature flanked by several people. Snarling, they launched themselves at the intruders.

* * *
Buffy left the room where the Fairy Queen was being held prisoner. As she silently walked down the halls toward where she was told he would be, she thought about what Titania had told her. Jacob had somehow got his hands on a spell book that allowed him to reach Avalon. While there, he had chanced upon Titania resting in one of her many gardens. Using the book, he had cast a spell that made her do whatever he demanded, including turning several of her people into mindless slaves. According to the fairy queen, he wasn't entirely sane. That last bit wasn't new to Buffy. "Heck, he thinks he's Santa Claus, how sane is that?" She thought to herself.

Rounding a corner, The Slayer found herself in a large room. Here are there were tables filled with elves hard at work. She scanned the area and found Jacob sitting atop a chair, dressed in a bright red Santa costume. Just what I need, I'm gonna have nightmares about Santa for weeks!

* * *
Bronx ran forward and jumped at Carlo, sending the Vampire flying. They landed and skidded to a halt, Bronx staring down at him and growling deep in his throat. Carlo shoved Bronx off him and jumped back to his feet. Knowing that he didn't stand a chance with the blue creature, he ran toward the gapping hole where the door used to be.

"What's your hurry?" Xander taunted. As soon as the Vampire cleared the hole, he looked down to find a stake protruding from his chest. Before him Xander stood grinning. "My dad always says 'Haste makes waste'." Carlo glared at Xander before reverting into a pile of dust. "Of course, I still don't know what he meant by it."

Across the room, Vinnie cowered in a corner as Lexington advanced on him. The Vampire was actually terrified. "Just like in the movies, all I have to do is put this wooden stake through his heart?"

"Yes, and please do it quick Lex!" Willow stood behind the green gargoyle, on her tiptoes looking over his shoulder.

Lexington inched closer to Vinnie, "Why, he looks harmless enough."

"You of all people should know how silly that statement just sounded."

Lexington chuckled despite the situation, "You're right." He started to lunge forward to finish Vinnie when the Vampire launched itself passed him and tackled Willow. The young redhead fell with a startled cry. Familiar with stunts such as this, Willow had been prepared. She had been palming her stake while Lexington toyed with the vampire. When he lunged for her, reflexes kicked in and she raised the stake before her for protection. As she fell with Vinnie atop her, the momentum of the drop shoved her stake into his heart. Lexington, horrified that the Vampire had gotten passed him, had spun at the same time and shoved his own stake into the vampire's heart through its back. A split second later Vinnie was no more than dust.

Lexington reached down and helped Willow to her feet. "Are you okay? I'm sorry he got passed me I should have been more alert."

Willow dusted herself off, "Yeah I'm fine and don't worry about it Lex. Thanks for the save."

Lexington followed her as the gang made their way deeper into the cannery.

"Ah ha!" Buffy had spotted the spell book Titania had told her about and now inched closer to it. She hoped that she could get to it before her friends crashed this Vampire's party. The only problem of course being that it sat on a table beside his chair. She was silently grateful that at least the elves seemed to ignore her, intent on the toys that they were making. Almost there, she froze in her place when she heard a commotion coming from the front of the building. When it didn't register with Jacob or the elves, she started forward again slowly. Finally she was right behind his chair, looking down on the book. She slowly reached out for it when Bronx burst through the door followed closely behind by Willow, Lexington, Xander, Oz, Cordelia, Giles, Goliath, and Elisa.

At that exact moment, Angel burst in from the other side of the room.

Jacob jumped to his feet "What is the meaning of this?"

Buffy grabbed the spell book, just as Jacob turned around and reached for it as well. "Slayer!"

Buffy looked up at the enraged Vampire, "Uh, hi?"

She jumped to her feet and started to sprint pass Jacob.

"You're not going anywhere with that little girl." Jacob lashed out, landing a wild punch to Buffy's side, knocking the air out of her lungs. She fell from the force of the blow and Jacob flew at her, ripping the book from her hands. "Get them," he yelled to the elves. Everyone was suddenly overwhelmed as they tried to protect themselves, but not hurt the elves.

He waved the book above his head and started to chant. Buffy swept her leg out and knocked him down, disrupting his spell. He fell hard and the book slipped from his grasp. The Slayer dove for the book and tossed it to her friends. "Wil, see if you can find something to free his hold over Titania and her people!"

Just as the words left her mouth, Jacob tackled her from behind. She landed with an audible 'oof' as the air was once again forced from her lungs. She shoved herself up tossing him off her and rolled before jumping to her feet. He ran passed her weaving through the tables, shoving toys and elves into her path. She palmed her stake and hopped onto a table, jumping from table to table as she ran after Jacob.

He skirted passed a table and ended up right in front of the Slayer. She flew at him, tackling him to the ground. Buffy raised the stake and aimed for his heart. A split second faster, Jacob punched her in the faced, knocking her head back. With his other hand, Jacob wrapped it around her wrist, trying to turn the stake on her. "Willow!" She yelled through clenched teeth, "Have you found anything yet? He's a lot stronger than he looks!"

"Its in Latin! I only know a little bit and the people who would know are a little occupied with elves!" Willow was of course referring to Giles and Angel.

Jacob used his weight to roll and position himself above Buffy. He continued to keep his hold of her wrist, twisting it and pressing the stake closer and closer to her. The Slayer slid her feet under him and pushed as hard as she could, tossing him over her head. She lost the stake as it flew out of her hand, but didn't give it a second though. She jumped to her feet and instantly reached for her spare Mr. Pointy as Jacob made another run for it.

"I've found something! I think!" Willow chanted, pointing a finger at Jacob as he raced across the room toward her. He stopped suddenly with a stricken look on his face. Slowly he started to turn white, and his clothes and body seem to expand from the feet up. All around them, the elves stopped what they were doing and shook their heads, as if waking up from a long dream.

"What have you done? You've ruined everything! This wasn't supposed to happen!"

Buffy's jaw dropped when as she began to realize what was happening to the Vampire. "Wil, what the heck did you do."

"I don't know, I thought it would slow him down or something. I thought I recognize a word that meant freeze or frozen or something."

Giles walked up to her and took the book from her hand. He read over the passage, "This is an odd spell. From the way its been added to this book, it appears to be written by the person who owns this book." He turned to Willow; "It seems you've turned him into a snowman."

Buffy grinned "You mean as in Frosty the Snowman?"

"Ahem, yes that would be correct."

"Uh guys, we've got problems I think."

Everyone turned to see what Xander meant and saw elves disappearing in blots of blue light. Giles turned to Goliath; "Do you know what's happening?"

A small smile lit the gargoyle's face. "It seems now that the Vampire is no longer himself, the spell has been broken. Perhaps they are merely being sent back to their home."

Just then, Titania appeared before them. "I thank you for your help humans." She inclined her head toward Goliath, Lexington and Bronx, "And to you and your brethren as well Goliath. How shall I repay your kindness?"

Elisa stepped forward smiling; "We could use a ride home if that's not too much of a problem."

"Done." Titania looks toward Buffy and her friends, "And you and your friends Slayer, what may I do for you?"

Buffy looks at Giles and then turned back to Titania, "Nothing, we were only doing our job. But perhaps knowing what you do know, you'll be prepared next time a vampire or such decides to drop by and visit."

Titania smiled, "Yes, never again will we be so ill prepared for such as him." She turned her gaze once again to Goliath, "Please make your good-byes and I will send you on your way."

Goliath placed his huge hand on Buffy's shoulder and smiled down at her "If you're ever in New York, don't hesitate to visit." He looked up at Giles and the rest of the gang, "That invitation stands for you all as well." He stepped back and walked over to stand beside Titania. Elisa briefly embraced Buffy and made her good-byes to the gang. Lexington made Willow promise to keep in touch.

With good-byes finished Goliath, Lexington, Elisa and Bronx stood in front of Titania. The Fairy Queen merely smiled and suddenly they were gone in a blur of bright blue light. She turned to Buffy and Co. with the same smile and disappeared in the same show of light.

Giles thumbed the spell book in his hands. He came across a note scribbled on the inside flap. "Oh, I seem to have found a note or something." It was written in Latin, but he read it out-loud anyway. Just then, the book disappeared, "Damn!"

Willow stared at Giles' empty hands, "What happened? What did the note say?"

"If found, return to sender. Apparently, by saying the words out-loud I activated a spell that send it back to its owner." Giles sighed.

"Well, that's that." Buffy turned to leave.

Xander stopped her and pointed at Jacob. "What about him?"

"What about him?" Buffy grinned. "This time tomorrow, ol' frosty will be nothing more than a pile of melted ice."

Everyone chuckled, realizing what she meant. There wasn't a snowman built that could survive Southern California weather.

Everyone followed her lead and headed for the exit. Buffy looked down at the stake in her hand and then over to 'Jacob the snowman'. She grinned and walked back toward him. With a quick motion, she tossed the stake in the air. She swiftly shot her foot out, connecting with the stake and sent it flying toward the snowman's face. It landed squarely on its face, becoming a nose. She giggled with glee as she walked out of sight, "Merry Christmas to All, and to All a good night."

* * *
Across the Oceans, many miles away, a very angry Gargoyle paced around her study. She tossed books here and there looking for something. "Bloody hell, I know that book was in here." Just then a small blue light formed on her desk and a book appeared. She lifted it up to read the cover.
Una smiled, "Well there you are. How did you get out of here? I bet that fat bloke who was here a while ago is the cause of this." Shrugging, Una sat at her desk and finished adding a spell to her grimorium.
