Giles padded to the door in his favorite pair of slippers. Pulling it open he was not surprised to see Xander standing on his doorstep. He had been expecting this so he stepped back to let him inside.
“I don’t get it Giles, you’re a Watcher so why haven’t you been doing your job!” Xander said storming into the living room. “Anya has been seeing someone. Someone who is not me!”
“What makes you say that Xander?” Giles asked walking over to sit.
Xander looked down and noticed Giles slippers. “Since when did you wear fluffy bunny slippers?”
“Since when did you become interested in Anya again?” Giles shot back, unwilling to defend his preferred choice of footwear with a man that still wore a Star Wars watch.
“I never stopped being interested in her…I just didn’t want to marry her yet.” Xander said rubbing his face with his hands. “But she wouldn’t wait and I was to afraid to tell her how I felt. We just ended a serious relationship and now a few months later she has the nerve to start seeing some nameless guy.”
“Anya is a young beautiful woman and you were a fool if you thought she would just wait around for you to realize that.” Giles told him calmly.
“Your not really helping here G-Man.” Xander said rolling his eyes. “The way this works is I tell you how much I love her and miss her and what a huge mistake I made and you put your big throbbing brain into overdrive and tell me how to get her back.”
“Well I’m sorry I just can’t do that.”
“Why not, is it because of the slippers thing?”
“No it because I don’t think you two are right for each other. You both want different things, she wants a mature satisfying relationship and you…” He searched his mind for a way to keep Xander away from Anya. His eyes glanced around the room a little desperately and landed on the perfect solution. “And you are still in love with Buffy.”
“What…I am so over her. I love Anya and this new guy will rue the day he tried to become between me and my woman.” Xander said completely off guard by that accusation.
“Oh after what Buffy said about being glad that you were single again, I thought your attentions would be on her.” Giles lied desperately when the clock chimed the hour.
“Buffy said that?” Xander asked, interested despite the fact he wanted Anya back. Buffy was his dream girl, his holy grail and last crusade all rolled into one while Anya had obviously moved on to some stranger she was ashamed to introduce to her friends.
“Yes, so I suggest you pursue her before she changes her mind. I think Spike has some sort of crush on her and since Riley has left she is quite vulnerable. This could be your one chance to save her from herself.” Giles said quickly hoping that Buffy would forgive him if she found out about this. He got up and walked over to the door. “I have a lot to do before my time at the Magic Box. So I really can’t help you anymore but I am sure you understand that this conversation never took place.
“Yeah, thanks” Xander said understanding that he was being dismissed but not sure if Giles had really been any help. “But seriously all kidding aside, you should think about finding a girl of your own. Man can’t live on dusty old books and fluffy girlie slippers alone.”
After Xander left, Giles knew that he was out of time so he bent down and jerked his slippers off. He had just hidden them behind the sofa cushion when Anya breezed into the room like a ray of sunshine.
“Hello darling did you have a productive morning?” He asked pulling her into his arms for a brief kiss. When she smiled, he started to pull her towards the stairs and away from his slippers. If she found them she might very well end their relationship and in the last four months it had taken a lot of effort to keep his two greatest secrets from meeting face to whisker.
