Halfway
By Marie Nomad
Angel stared out over graveyard under the dim moonlight. Lorne told him to come here for some reason that he couldn’t explain. Why was he here? He had to wonder. A part of him always feels at home in a graveyard, it was dark, foreboding, and it was the place where he was reborn after Liam died.
As he walked over the buried bodies, he felt a chill in the air. It was the sense of a rising of another vampire. It was something that all vampires have, but never talked about. It was something that he preferred to keep to himself. A man must have his secrets.
Out of nowhere, he heard a muffled scream of horror. The vampire stiffened as he followed the scream. He recognized the scream anywhere but he never heard of anything so filled with fear. “Buffy.” Angel whispered as he rushed to the gravestone. He could hear the pounding on the wood from so deep below. How Buffy did came back to life after so long? Did she become a vampire like she so much hated? Or was she a zombie? The man shook his head as he went onto his knees and started to dig with his bare hands. He didn’t care. If she was a vampire, he will stake her because that was what she would’ve wanted him to do.
Dirt flew into his face, buried itself into his nails, and even into his gelled hair. He didn’t care. All he could think about was Buffy trying to get out. He had woken up in a coffin once and he didn’t want Buffy to suffer more than needed. Minutes passed as he dug in further and harder than before. From deep in the earth, he could hear Buffy clawing herself up. “Hang on, Buffy.” He urged as loudly as he could as he dug in deeper.
Finally, a hand reached out from the hole and Angel grabbed it. It was blood stained with ruined nails but it was human. He could hear the blood flowing through her veins. Quickly, he pulled the rest of her out. Buffy gasped as she grabbed on to Angel. Angel held her as he gazed at her shivering form. She was shaking from fear that he never saw before. “Angel?” She whispered.
“Yeah, it’s me. It’s okay.” Angel soothed as he took off his duster while keeping at least one arm from leaving her body. He wrapped the duster around her tiny body. “You look cold.”
“Am I in Hell?” She asked as she felt the duster on her body. “I was warm and happy and yet I’m not any more. I must be in Hell but what are you doing here?”
“You’re not in Hell. Don’t worry, you’re home. We’re going to find out how you came back and you will be okay.” Angel said as he picked her up.
“Don’t leave me again.” Buffy pleaded. “Don’t leave me alone.”
The man sighed. Buffy didn’t leave him alone when he first came back from Hell, all feral. He couldn’t leave her alone after her ordeal. “I won’t. I promise. Let’s take you home.”
