Part Five

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"You mean the King and Queen of the Fairies from that Shakespeare play?" Cordelia asked.

Goliath smiled at her, for some reason he had thought she'd be the last to possess that knowledge. "You are partially correct. Your William Shakespeare did write of a King and Queen of the Fairies named Oberon and Titania. However, their existence is not limited to that work of literature."

"Titania and Oberon live on the isle of Avalon. Just recently, several of their people were kidnapped and taken from their home. We were asked to retrieve them. We have come here because we were informed that they were taken to this city."

Buffy balanced her stake on the tip of her finger, "Okay, lets pretend for a moment that elves do exists like you're saying. All we have to do is find them, free them, and send them on their way. That's too easy. How'd they get here in the first place?"

Willow nodded. "And how come you all are trying to save them and not their own King and Queen? You'd think they'd have better luck at finding their own people than any of us would."

Lexington spoke up, "Actually, we asked Puck the same thing, but he didn't have an answer for us. We know there is more to this than what we've been told."

Giles looked to the small green gargoyle, "Puck, as in the elfish prankster?"

Goliath nodded, "The same. He was the one who sent us here." He looked to The Slayer; "You're familiar with this city, where should we start looking?"

"Back downtown, in the area where we bumped into you. Lots of unmentionables like to hide out in those abandoned buildings. We should probably wait till tomorrow to do this. Sunrise isn't too far away and we have school and stuff. Why don't we meet back here tomorrow evening?"

"Good plan. If I remember correctly, you gargoyles are stone by day so your movements are somewhat limited. I think I may have some texts at home that should shed some light on our situation. For now, I want you kids to go home and get some rest." Buffy's watcher removed his glasses and cleaned the lenses. "Are any of you in need of a place to rest?"

"They can stay with me, I'm sure mom won't mind." Buffy smiled. "She's still getting used to me being the Chosen one, but this should be easy for her to handle. I think she may even like the company."

"Sounds good to me," Elisa accepted. "That's it then?"

* * *
Joyce Summers sat in the front room sipping her cup of tea. Waiting up for her daughter had become routine for her since she found out her little girl's secret. Before she knew, she used to think that it was just Buffy being a teenager that kept her out so late. Now that she knew the true reason, she sometimes found herself wishing for the past. It was a lot easier accepting that your child was a rebellious teen … she had been one herself not so long ago.

The front door opened and in stepped her child. Joyce put down her cup and stood up to greet her daughter. Behind Buffy, a woman she had never seen before stepped inside and closed the door.

"Mom, I'd like you to meet Elisa Maza. Elisa, this is my mother."

Elisa stepped forward and extended her hand. "Its nice to meet you Mrs. Summer's."

"Please, its Joyce. Its nice to meet you too."

"Elisa is a detective from New York City. I was kinda hoping that it would be okay if she stayed with us for a couple days while she's in town."

Joyce took one look at her daughter's face and instantly knew that Elisa was here for far more than a visit. Someone needed The Slayer. She swept out her arm, motioning Elisa to make herself comfortable, "That's fine dear. Would you like something to drink Elisa?"

"Thank you, but I'm fine."

Joyce sat back down, "What brings you all the way here from New York?"

Buffy grinned as Elisa looked her way, "Its okay Elisa, my mother knows about my 'after-school' job."

"Well, my friends and I are here to find a group of people that were kidnapped."

"Doh!" Buffy whapped her forehead, "I almost forgot. Mom, Elisa isn't alone. She brought three friends with her. I didn't think you would mind about them either, and you don't have to worry about them needing a bed to sleep in."

"Oh?" The Slayer nodded and walked to the front door. She opened it and in stepped Goliath, Lexington and Bronx. Bronx sniffed the air, and then headed toward Buffy's mother. He looked up at her and placed one of his big blue paws on her knee. "Uh, hi." Joyce cleared her throat and then looked to Elisa with wide frightened eyes.

"That's Bronx. He's really just a big puppy once you get to know him. He seems to like you."

Joyce slowly reached out and patted the top of Bronx's head.

"We thank you for your assistance. It is rare that we are so far way from home." Goliath nodded toward Buffy; "You have an extraordinary daughter. She bears well under the strain of her commitment."

Joyce beamed with motherly pride, "Thank You."

Lexington turned from gazing out the window. "Dawn will be here soon, we should find a place to rest."

Joyce stood up; "we have a cellar if you need someplace dark."

Buffy grinned at her mother, "They're gargoyles mom, not vampires."

"Oh, I'm sorry. Where exactly do gargoyles sleep?"

Goliath instantly saw where the human called Buffy got her spark of life. Her mother wore a grin that mirrored her own. He inclined his head at Joyce. "Our perches at home have always been good enough. In absence of those, your backyard will be adequate."

With that, Joyce took over and set everyone up for the night. As she lay down beneath the covers and reached over to turn out the light she thought, "One thing can be said of being the Mother of the Chosen One, you get to meet a lot of new and interesting … people."
