Part Three

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Buffy round-housed Goliath causing him to grunt in pain. "No? Well, I'll bet you still bleed."

"Perhaps, as I'm sure the same goes for you as well." The big gargoyle swatted at Buffy as if shooing away an annoying fly. She fell and skidded several feet away from the force of his blow.

"Hey! Pick on someone your own size ya big bully, "Xander taunted before stepping harshly on Goliath's tail.

Goliath roared in surprise and anger. He turned to the dark-haired boy behind him, his eyes glowing in fury.

Xander gulped and took a step back, "That of course wouldn't be me."

Goliath grabbed Xander by the front of his shirt, lifting him to eye level. "You should look where you step human." He had no intention of hurting the boy, but hoped to scare him.

Cordelia screamed, "Willow do something!"

"If my banishment spell didn't work, then I doubt my binding one would either." Willow bit her bottom lip in worry.

"Whatever! Just do something," Cordelia called back. She picked up a rock and tossed it at Goliath's head, "Leave my boyfriend alone!"

Goliath turned toward the voice yelling at him and was surprised to see a young, attractive brunette who appeared to be, not only unafraid, but also quite angry.

Buffy stood and flew at Goliath, landing a solid kick to his midsection. With a roar he tossed Xander at Buffy. He didn't want to hurt either of them, but the girl's diminutive stature was deceptive. She was stronger than she appeared. The Slayer and her friend landed in a pile of arms and legs. Cordelia rushed over, helping Xander to his feet. Buffy jumped into the air and landed another kick under the big gargoyle's chin, snapping his head back. She landed and then quickly sidestepped, avoiding his tail as he whipped it around trying to knock her off her feet.

Suddenly from around the corner, two figures emerged from the shadows. The blue dog-like creature ran toward Xander and Cordelia, growling deep in its throat. It slowly inched toward them. Its green companion jumped in front of Willow, eyes glowing with a wicked grin spread across its mouth.

"There's more?" Willow stared in disbelief. Oz stepped in between Willow and the gargoyle, shielding her. Willow lifted a finger and pointed it at the creature.

"Great Mother, Dark Lady. I call on your benevolence, I ask for your protection. Leaden this creature's limbs, bind it where it…"

"Police! Freeze!"

Willow's words died on her lips and everyone turned to see who had interrupted. Buffy groaned. Great! Just what I need, some clueless cop seeing all this and trying to butt in. She stepped forward; angry that the cop could unknowingly get someone injured. In the back of her mind she noted that at least the creatures had stopped their attack.

"Bronx, Lexington. Stand down." Goliath folded his wings over his shoulders and stood looking at Buffy. The Slayer's friends regrouped behind her.

"Are you okay?" The woman asked. Before Buffy could respond to the question she thought was directed at her, the cop brushed past her and rested her hand on the big gargoyle's arm.

"Excuse me?" The confused Slayer stared at the slim, dark-haired woman. "Answers would be good here." She tapped her fingers against her stake as if counting off a list: "Who are you? Why are you chummy with Mr. Mean and his friends? And what are the four of you doing here in Sunnydale? I'm sure I'm correct when I say that this isn't a vacation."

"Who I am is a simple enough question. My name is Detective Elisa Maza." Elisa removed her badge and showed it to the Slayer. "And you'll forgive me if I refuse to answer the rest of your questions given the current situation and my lack of knowledge as to who you are."

"Wait, if you're a real cop, then how come you're all buddy buddy with creatures who like to play with leeches?"

Elisa turned to Goliath with a puzzled frown, "Leeches?"

Buffy sighed, resting on hand on her hip and making motions in the air with her stake. "Vampires, blood-suckers, creatures of the night. Ring a bell?"

"What is she talking about?" Elisa replaced her gun in the holster hidden beneath her jacket.

"I had decided to scout around the area when I heard a cry for help. I went to answer and found what could only be a vampire attacking a young girl. I was attempting to rescue her when this human and her friends showed up." Goliath spread his hand before him, bringing Elisa's attention to Buffy's friends waiting behind her. He then turned his stern gaze down to Lexington and Bronx. "And I believe I told the two of you to wait for me." Lex and Bronx just stared at the ground.

Buffy looked first at Goliath and then at Elisa. She wasn't getting any of those weird feelings that Xander liked to call her spidey sense, and therefore decided to give them the benefit of the doubt for now. Not to mention, she remembered Giles' weird passage in that book of his. Someone in this group could possibly be her "powerful ally" or such.

Buffy stuffed her stake back into her jacket and extended her hand. "I guess introductions would be handy. The name's Buffy." She motioned behind her for her friends to join her. "This is Willow and Oz." She waved her hand at the small redhead and the young man whose arm she hung on to. "And these two are Xander and Cordelia. Guys, this is Detective Elisa Maza and…" She looked to Goliath.

"Humans call me Goliath, and this is Lexington and Bronx."

"Well Goliath, I'm sorry for what happened. I was only doing my job."

Goliath nodded. "What is this job of yours?"

Buffy rolled her eyes and spoke in a bored tone; "I'm the Chosen One. She who alone stands against the darkness yada yada yada. Basically, something bad goes down, I'm there to stop it. Your turn, why are you all here?"

"All we can really tell you is that we were sent here to retrieve something." Elisa ran her fingers through her hair. "We've come all the way from New York."

Willow forgot her fear and took a step forward, "Wow, then you must be who the Codex referred to."

Buffy nodded. "And we should probably take you to see Giles."
