Part One

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A young, blonde-haired woman stepped through the library doors, and waved to those already waiting inside.

"Hey guys, what's new?" Buffy Summers smiles at the three people already seated. She walks around the table and takes the vacant seat beside the redheaded hacker and her best friend, Willow Rosenberg.

"So far, nothing." Willow responds, closing the large dust covered book in front of her. "Did you bag any spookables last night."

Buffy shakes her head, "Aside from the wierdo thick fog we had, the place was pretty quiet. There was just your usual pale faces out for a late night snack." Buffy looks over to the two boys sitting across from her, "What about you guys? Any leads on what to expect?"

Xander Harris brushes his fingers through his dark hair, "Nothing on this end either. Giles did mention that he found another "odd" entry in that Watcher book of his."

"The Codex." Willow says, correcting Xander.

Xander shrugs, "Yeah, that."

Willow turns back to Buffy, "So you think we should go into, well you know, research mode?"

Buffy bites her bottom lip, "I don't know. Sounds like just another day on the Hellmouth to me. Find any references to anything unusual while I was out, well something unusual for the hellmouth that is."

Oz shrugs. "There has been a little more activity then usual around the docks by the old warehouses. Maybe we should check that out tonight?"

Just then, Giles stepped out of the book cage, carrying a small leather-bound book. He pushed his glasses back onto the bridge of his nose and cleared his throat. "Yes, that's a good suggestion Oz. As to the entry Xander mentioned in the Codex. It reads "A powerful ally will need your assistance to recover a being or item of immense power."

Willow pipes up and smiles. "Wow, sounds important. I wonder what it is."

"Whatever it is, I'm sure we can handle it." Buffy looks around "Hey, where's Cordelia? I thought she said she'd be here."

"She said she had some things to do." Xander supplied for the missing brunette. "She's probably at the Mall. I'm sure we'll see her tonight at The Bronze."

Buffy stood and gathered her things, "Speaking of The Bronze, I'll see you all there tonight. I better get going. I told my mom I would be home in time for dinner tonight." She smiles at Giles, "I promise I'll finish telling you about patrol last night."

Willow slings her back-pack over her shoulder, "Yeah, we should be leaving too."

Oz nods , "Hey Buffy, need a ride?"

"I'd love one." Buffy replies, waving good-bye to Xander and Giles.

* * *
The gang made their way home as the last of the sun's rays gave way to night. On the other side of town a trio of gargoyle statues rest on the roof an abandoned warehouse, looking very much out of place.

As the sun slips beneath the horizon, the stone statues begin to chip and crack. The three gargoyles shed their stone skin as if they're merely lizards. They stretch, welcoming the night. The smallest of the trio, and dog like in appearance, walks over to the edge of the roof and sniffs the night air. He looks up as a small green hand patted his head. Lexington smiles down at Bronx and then turns to Goliath. "So, this is Sunnydale? Elisa said she'd meet us here, right?"

Goliath nods, a frown appearing on his hard mouth. "I'm not so sure it was a good idea she joined us on this quest. There is no telling what dangers await us here. For all we know, this could be yet another trap set for us by Xanatos."

"All the more reason for her to come along. She can talk to the locals and do things we can't during the day. Its not like we were given a whole lot to work with. I did a search on the Internet before we left and this town is sitting on what's called the 'Hellmouth'."

"The 'Hellmouth'?"

Lex nodded. "Boca del Inferno, as the Spanish who settled here called it. This place is crawling with all kinds of magic and mystical energy. It attracts a variety of evil creatures that like to call this place home." He shook his head, "And I thought that Vampires only existed in myth."

Goliath chuckles, "The same has been said about us, my friend." He walked to the edge and scanned the streets below. "I want you two to wait for Elisa. I'm going to check out the surrounding area a little. I won't be long." He stretches out his mighty wings and steps off, gliding into the night.
