Timeline: Season Three - "After Becoming" but before "Lover's Walk"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Prologue
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Out past the docks, beyond a row of abandoned warehouses, a portly man appearing to be in his late 50's stands in a make-shift boat several feet from the water's edge. He mumbles softly to himself as he thumbs through a small leather-bound book.
"Teach him to ignore me, I will." He grumbles, "Unfit for his job, he is."
Jacob Masters has held a grudge since childhood. Several years ago, a great thing happened to him and time began to lose meaning. He seemed to have more and more time to brood over his resentment. Although he was never really sane to begin with, his prolonged brooding only made matters worse. And with each passing year, he spent every waking moment planning his revenge.
Jacob ran his hand through his hair. If you were to pass him on the street, he would appear to you as any other human. However, he's far removed from humanity. This short plump man softly cursing the wind is a vampire, Sunnydale is known for them.
He looks back down at the book he holds and smiles. Jacob knows that it is a lot older than it appears. The spell of preservation cast on each page being quite powerful. Once again, he begins turning the pages in earnest. "I am close to the end of my quest, I can feel it." Jacob coos to himself, "It's got to be in here, it must."
"And there it is! I knew it!" He closes the book with a satisfied thump. Raising his arms above his head, one still clutching the book, he begins to chant in a deep voice that rings along the shores.
"Vocate ventus fortunate ex regnum Oberonis et hic navis fluctum ad orae Avalonis."
A heavy mist begins to move in, masking the lights from the shore and blanketing the area with an unearthly silence. Suddenly, Jacob's little skiff begins to move. He falls heavily, sitting in the middle of the moving craft. The movement so sudden and unexpected that he nearly falls overboard. He stays there for several quiet filled moments, silently hoping that his spell worked. If he still needed to breathe, he would have been holding his breath in anticipation.
Slowly the mist begins to part before him and his boat hits solid ground. He stands up and looks around him. What lays before him makes him giggle with childish glee. His spell had most definitely worked.
He claps his hands like a child who had just found a hidden Christmas gift. "Soon, soon I will have everything I need and all will be right."
With a sense of youth-filled spirit, Jacob steps out of his boat into the soft sands and walks along the shores of Avalon.
