Chapter 9

Buffy took a deep shaky breath and stood up from her spot in the kitchen. She then moved to the bathroom and ran her hands threw her hair, tears still falling down her flushed cheeks. Sniffling, she wiped the tears off of her face violently with the back of her hand. Raising her head up to the mirror, she looked at the mascara running underneath her eyes. Grabbing a towel, she quickly wiped it away. Finally figuring she looked decent enough, she made her way out into the living room.

"Dawn?" She called. Panic ran through her when silence was all that she got back. "Dawn?" She called up the stairs. "Dawn! This isn't funny!"

"I'm back!" Dawn called as she walked threw the back door.

Buffy rushed to the kitchen, "Where the hell were you?!" She demanded, not filled with as much anger as worry. Dawn made her way into the kitchen and it was then that Buffy noticed Spike right behind her. Running her hands quickly threw her hair, Buffy greeted him, "Um, hey, Spike." Mentally she cursed herself at how childish that must’ve sound.

"Hey, luv," He replied, "Thought you might want her back." He pointed toward Dawn.

Buffy smiled sweetly, "Thanks.”

Turning to Dawn she glared at her and gave her a look that said, ‘We’ll talk about this later’.

"I'm goin' to go upstairs and do my uh... homework," Dawn lied, "So you two should you know, get all comfy.” Before she could get a response she turned on her heals and left the room.

Spike and Buffy looked at each other uncomfortably. "So, I heard you and Angel are over. I’m sorry luv." Spike spoke first. He felt sorry for the way Buffy felt, but he wasn’t sorry that they were over.

Buffy nodded, "He, uh, was cheating on me," She told him truthfully tears forming in her emerald eyes. She took a deep breath and blinked them away, determined not to cry in front of Spike.

"Sorry, pet," He repeated tilting his head to the side to get a better look at her. He'd seen the tears in her eyes that she quickly masked. More than anything Spike wanted to comfort her, hold her in his arms and tell her, show her, just how amazing she was. "Some people just don't know when they've got somethin' amazing." He told her with a small smile.

Buffy bit her lip and looked up at him, "Thank you," She whispered.

"Nothin' to thank me for, luv-Buffy," He corrected himself.

Buffy smiled, "Do you uh want some hot cocoa?" She offered. "I'm sure Dawnie woke you up. Maybe some coffee?"

"Coffee sounds good," He told her.

Buffy smiled and moved to the cabinet and started to boil some water. "Umm, what do you like in it?" She asked.

"Lots of sugar. Don't really like Coffee." He admitted with a smile. "Jus' like the kick it gives you."

Buffy nodded, "Okay. We have French Vanilla," She offered, "Dawnie likes it in her Coffee, she made me buy it for her. But she never drinks it.”

Spike smiled, "Sure, I'll take some."

Buffy nodded and watched as he sat down on a stool at the island as she made the coffee. He started to drum his fingers against the table.

"So, um... today's your day off... right?" She asked turning to him, nervous with him for some odd reason.

Spike nodded, "Yeah," He answered.

"So, would you like to go out with my friend and me?" Buffy offered, "I mean you don't have to. It's just... um she's back in town for a week and you know I thought it could let us get to know each other better, and you could meet her. But you don’t have to or anything since I’m sure a guy like you has plans…”

Spike smiled at her, thinking how cute she was when she rambled. "Sure, pet. Nothing going on tonight. I’d love to spend time with you and....?"

"Willow," Buffy finished for him, "I went to high school with her."

Spike nodded, "Sounds like a nice bird."

Buffy smiled, "Yeah, she really is."

She turned to her coffee and poured some into a mug, then added the liquid and placed it in front of Spike. "Here," She said and began pouring making a cup for herself. When she did she sat down across from Spike and took a sip. "Uh--," She said clenching her jaw.

Spike smirked, "Hot?"

Buffy nodded and laughed gently, "Ow."

He loved the sound of her laughter. He silently and secretly made it a goal for himself to make her laugh as much as possible. Coming out of his daze, his eyes met with hers. Emerald met blue like fire meeting ice.

Dawn stood in the same spot where she listened to the breakup between Angel and Buffy, but this time she had a huge smile plastered over her face. Spike was a great guy and he was perfect for her sister, now all she had to do was show the two of them that. It seemed though that Spike already thought it, and she would really only need to work on Buffy. Deciding to be risky, she took a chance and peeked around the corner of the wall. Dawn smiled when she saw Buffy smiling. Buffy seemed to be smiling a lot around Spike. No one had been able to make her smile like that recently.

Like Spike, she had a goal and it was to get these two together.

Buffy watched Spike as he ran his fingers over the rim of the mug. She hated that she had so much to say to him, but nothing would come out. Her mind started to wander to all the things he could do with his hands, causing her to gulp as an image of them popped up in her head.

"Come on, Buffy, Spike, one of you, start some kind of conversation," Dawn whispered, more to herself than them.

Spike looked up at the blonde in front of him and decided there was enough silence, "So, where are we goin' with Willow?" Spike asked tilting his head to the side.

Dawn smiled, silently thanking Spike for getting the balls to speak first.

"Umm, probably to the Bronze," She answered before quickly adding, "If you don't want to go there we can go some where else, since you know, you work there and all."

"Angel's night," Spike simply stated, "So are you sure you wanna go?"

Buffy looked at Spike and sighed, "You're his cousin, right?" At Spike's nod she continued, "Was he always this much of a jerk?"

Spike smiled, "No, When we were kids we were really close. You know, the usual, chasin' each other around in the backyard pretendin' we were Batman and Robin. I was always Batman. Then he... I don't really know what happened, he got older and we fell apart," Spike explained, "There wasn't really a reason for it."

Buffy smiled, "Batman?"

"What I didn't tell you? I was a pounce when I was a kid," He said with a smile.

Buffy laughed lightly. "I guess we can go to the Bronze. Maybe go a little earlier than Angel’s hours. And when you say you were a pounce do you mean--"

"I would stop right there, pet," Spike said in a gentle voice. At Buffy’s confused look he called out, "Hey, Nib. Thought you had homework to do."

Dawn appeared laughing in the doorframe.

Buffy looked at Spike and then at Dawn and started laughing, "How did you know she was there?"

Spike smiled, "She isn't as good as stalkin' as I am."

Buffy just burst out laughing. Spike couldn’t help but smile, thinking how wonderful it felt being in the presence of the Summers girls.

---That night at the Bronze---

Buffy and Spike sat at a small table for four. Dawn was up at the bar getting a coke for herself, and Willow was yet to arrive. Spike noticed Buffy looking around nervously, and he knew exactly who she was looking for; Angel. "He doesn't get here for at least four more hours," Spike told her, surprising her but how well he knew her, "By then we should be long gone."

Buffy excused herself when she noticed Willow walk through the door. Spike just smiled with a nod then watched the blonde, his eyes never leaving her. He looked toward the door and saw the redhead. Her hair was short and fell to her shoulders, in a loose curled way. She had her make up was done lightly, and her skin was almost as pale as his own was. He smiled as they hugged and Buffy pointed to him trying not to look like she was.

The two came back to the table. "Hi," Willow introduced herself almost shyly and extended her hand to the bleached blond man with a nervous smile, "I'm Willow."

Spike stood up taking her hand and shaking it with a sexy smirk, "Spike."

Buffy rolled her eyes and it was then that she realized it; Spike was a flirtaholic.

Willow blushed releasing his hand and he let it fall to his side, as she did hers. The three of them took a seat and this time, Buffy didn't take the seat across from Spike; she took the one that was next to him. Willow sat in the one that Buffy was in before. Buffy watched as Spike made small conversation with Willow, getting to know her better. The group smiled and laughed, just enjoying their time out together.

Dawn stood by the bar, congratulating on a job well done. “Aren't they the coolest couple?" Dawn asked with a giddy smile watching the blond couple.

Gunn nodded with a smile from his spot behind the bar, "They do look good together," He commented. "But isn't she Angel's girlfriend?"

"They broke up," Dawn informed him with a grin, "I'm gonna go and sit with them."

Dawn walked over to the table and took the empty seat next to Willow. After a while of catching up and talking, Willow noticed a redheaded boy on his way to the table, "Um, do we know him?" She asked looking at the people around her.

Spike turned and smiled, "Oz!" He exclaimed getting up and walking up to him, "Where've you been?"

"Around," Oz answered simply, "I need a favor."

Spike smiled, "What's that?"

"I need you to play the guitar on stage. Larry didn't show up today and I saw you sitting here... can you?" He asked.

Spike looked back at the table and at the girls. "Is that alright with you girls?" He asked with a smile and looked at Dawn's dreamy face. Mainly look at Buffy and seeing her nod, he smirked turning back to Oz, “Yeah, I think that it will be okay.”

Willow cleared her throat.

"Oh!" Spike smiled and introduced them, "Um, Oz, this is Willow, Dawn, and Buffy." Spike looked at Buffy taking the first chance he had almost all night, or at least as he saw it. "So, pet, after I rock the stage you want to save me a dance?" He asked with a smirk.

Willow and Dawn gave Buffy a wide smile.

Buffy looked at Spike, the shock evident on her face. Did he just ask her to dance? "Oh, um, yes... I mean uh yeah, sure,” Buffy gave him her brightest smile, as she realized just how stupid she must’ve sounded.

Spike smiled and took Buffy's hand, kissing the knuckles while catching her eyes in his. "Alright then," He said when Oz taped his shoulder. Sighing, he turned and walked to the stage with Oz, not wanting to leave the golden goddess behind.

Buffy giggled nervously as Spike walked away and looked at the two girls at the table staring at her, "What?" She questioned with wide innocent eyes.

Dawn smiled like a crazy person, "You looooooooove him!" She sung jokingly.

"No, I don't,” Buffy said, "He's nice." But no matter how hard she tried she couldn't keep the smile from creeping onto her face; he'd asked HER to DANCE! "I like him...no loving of any kind" Buffy assured them again.

Willow though was in her own little world, looking up at the stage at the red headed boy, "Umm, so, who's that?" She asked.

Buffy looked up at the stage as Spike argued with Oz about the guitar. Her eyes zoomed in on the blonde only as he complained but strapped the guitar around his shoulder anyway. He moved to his own microphone and stood in front of it. As the girls screamed at him, he smirked at them from the stage. Buffy growled, but no, she wasn’t jealous… but come on! He just asked her to dance. He didn't need to flirt with every girl in the place.

"Oz. Jeez Will, Spike just told you," Dawn answered since both older girls seemed to be in their own little worlds. Dawn stood up and the girls looked at her finally.

"Let’s dance!" Dawn said excitedly, "So we can you know.. um support the guys or whatever!" She said pulling the girls up and dragging them to the dance floor.

Buffy got to the dance floor and looked up at the stage seeing Spike smiled at her. It was a gentle smile, and it seemed to be just for her; not aimed toward any of the other girls in the place.

Spike started off the song with a guitar solo, and he was right, he was rocking up the stage. She didn't know how he did it, years of practice? But it made the whole room start to dance and scream; not that anyone knew what he was going to sing, or that the hot bartender was this talented.

Oz moved to the head microphone and started to sing his song.

---This ain't a song for the broken-hearted
No silent prayer for the faith-departed
I ain't gonna be just a face in the crowd
You're gonna hear my voice
When I shout it out loud---

Spike moved up from his spot behind the microphone. Oz was playing the bass guitar and Spike grabbed the mic.

---It's my life
It's now or never
I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
(It's my life)
My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said
I did it my way
I just wanna live while I'm alive
It's my life---

Spike looked at Oz and he nodded his head with a smile as he continued the song.

---This is for the ones who stood their ground
For Tommy and Gina who never backed down
Tomorrow's getting harder make no mistake
Luck ain't even lucky
Got to make your own breaks

Better stand tall when they're calling you out
Don't bend, don't break, baby, don't back down

It's my life
And it's now or never
'Cause I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
(It's my life)
My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said
I did it my way
I just want to live while I'm alive
'Cause it's my life!---

Spike smiled as he stood in back of the microphone.

A few minutes later when the song finished, Spike came down off the stage and walked over to the table where the girls had returned. "So, pet?" He said with a smirk to Buffy, "May I have this dance?"

Buffy smiled and stood up. She took his extended hand looking back at a smiling Dawn as he guided her to the dance floor. The song was slow and he looked up at Oz who was smiling at him. He’d asked him to make a fast one, something he could grind to Buffy with. Oz of course thought it would be sweeter to dance slower, so he made it a slow one. "Thanks," Spike mouthed to Oz sarcastically.

At Oz’s sad attempt at Spike’s smirk, Spike rolled his eyes and turned his attention back on Buffy who was smiling widely. He wrapped his arms around her waist and she wrapped hers around his neck, resting her head again his chest softly. She looked up at him slightly with a smile after a while. "How did you learn to do that?" Buffy asked, "You know, with the guitar?"

Spike smiled, "When I was a kid wanted to be a rock star," He explained, "Another reason why dad wanted me out of the house." He mentally cursed himself for bringing his father up, especially now. Buffy seemed to notice he didn't want to talk about it and skipped over the subject.

"You would make a good one," Buffy said giggling, "You have a nice voice."

Spike smiled, "Thanks princess."

Time was flying by and none of them noticed how long they had been there. Angel walked threw the entrance to the Bronze with a smile on his face after spending the whole day with Cordelia. He walked passed the dance floor. Seeing something out of his peripheral vision, he stopped sharply and turned to it. His jaw practically dropped to the floor when he saw Spike holding BUFFY! His Buffy!

The two blondes were dancing so close, moving to their own rhythm, that they didn't even realize him staring at them. Anger started to bubble up inside of Angel. His own blood; his cousin had betrayed him. Buffy had betrayed him! Or in his own twisted mind that’s what was happening. He watched as Spike did the usual, make her laugh and flirt with her.

Spike looked down at Buffy as she looked up at him, their eyes catching. Before he knew what happened his lips were on hers, kissing her gently. Buffy, stunned by the action closed her eyes and let him kiss her, slowly kissing him back. Her fingers tangled with the hairs on the back of his neck, swirling them around her finger, in a way of letting him know that the kiss is okay. She smiled into the kiss as he began to deepen it.

Angel stood stunned at what was happening in front of him. The anger that was in his stomach started to rise. "So, you're why she wouldn't sleep with me?" He asked in a deadly whisper.

Spike's hand moved from her waist and up to her hair playing with the golden locks that fell down her back. He could kiss her forever and he wanted to. Buffy's fingers danced at the nape of his neck and they broke apart slightly. Foreheads still connected.

"God, you're beautiful," Spike breathed out when he managed to get some of his voice together.

Dawn watched the couple with a smile, which soon dropped to a frown when she looked back to the bar and saw Angel watching also. Her big, brown, doe eyes widened, "Uh oh,” She whispered as
Angel started to push threw the crowd.

Spike was pulled off of Buffy. He turned around to become face to face with Angel. Anger bubbling up in Spike also, but when he was about to say something Angel punched him in the nose. “Angel!" Buffy screeched, which just caused Angel to punch Spike again. "Angel! Stop!"

Spike grabbed his nose, glad it wasn't bleeding or broken. He looked up at Angel and smiled, before he punched him in the face making everyone around the three people move into a circle surrounding him. Spike punched him again and Angel stumbled back.

"Spike!" Buffy called. He turned to her thinking she was hurt. "Look out!" she yelled as Angel went to punch him. Before he could, Dawn jumped onto Angel’s back and started to beat him with her tiny fists.

Spike smirked, "Thanks Nibblet."

"JERK!" Dawn yelled as she continued to hit Angel, "Don't hurt Spike!"

Angel tried to shake the teen off but couldn't. "Dawn, get off," He growled in a warning tone.

Dawn looked up at Spike for an okay, and at his nod she jumped off of Angel. She quickly got out of the way and moved near her sister. "Spike's gonna kick your ass!" Dawn called and Buffy looked at her
Wide-eyed. Dawn just gave her an innocent look, "What?"

Angel looked back at Spike, but a second too late. Spike's fist rammed into his face. He put all of his anger and strength into it he could muster. Spike smiled when Angel dropped to the floor. Unconscious.

Spike shook his head with a smirk, "Should learn how to treat a lady, mate. Might let you KEEP one." He turned to Buffy who was staring at him disbelief in her eyes, "So, whose up for ice cream?" He asked catching his tongue between his teeth. ‘Whose up for ice cream? Nice subject change you wanker!’ Spike mentally cursed himself.

Dawn raised her hand, "I am!" She squealed happily. "He's sooo much cooler then all your other boyfriends!" Dawn gave Buffy with a giddy laugh.

Buffy looked at Dawn and then at Spike, "He's not my boyfriend."

Spike ran his fingers threw his hair, avoiding Buffy's gaze and looking at Dawn, "So, about that ice cream?"

Buffy looked up at Spike seeing the hurt in his eyes that was quickly covered up. She didn't know what it was for. After all, he couldn't want her... could he?

Dawn sighed. What the hell did she have to do to get these two together?! She was running out of ideas fast! "Right ice cream..." She mumbled, as she grabbed Willow by the arm and left Buffy and Spike to catch up.
