Xander stood in the shadows as he watched Buffy being tied to the post. He could feel her frustration from here. She was not happy about the situation, but Ms. Calendar said that this was how it was supposed to be done. Xander was clutching the stake in his hand so tightly that splinters were working their way into his palm. He ignored the pain. He could se Willow acting as lookout and Ms. Calendar was marking out the design on the ground again using the remaining pieces from last night as her guide.
Willow whistled out. They were coming. Xander saw Giles whisper something in Buffy's ear and saw her nod. Then him and Ms. Calendar vanished into the night.
He saw the first vampires skulk into the Cemetery. He took a deep breath and ran his fingers nervously though Buffy's hair. He was ready for them. He was! Well, he would be if he could stop shaking. He readied himself as the vampires reached Buffy. They were taunting her but he could not work out what they were saying. Buffy was taunting back. Xander could tell as Buffy got a slap around her face for her troubles. It looked like he'd have a black eye tomorrow.
Somewhere over to his left he could hear a watch alarm going off and very quietly Giles and Ms. Calendar began speaking the words of the rite. A couple of minutes later the watch on his wrist bleeped twice. That was his stage call. Xander took a deep breath and stepped out of the shadows.
He put a hand on his hip and called out, "hello boys!" the vampires heads whipped round, Buffy was forgotten.
The vampires advanced on Xander. Quite quickly. He could hear Giles voice getting louder and Ms. Calendar's joining it. The rite was reaching its conclusion. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Willow creeping out of the shadows holding a crossbow. Taking a deep breath he flung his stake at the mob. The world slowed down.
The stake was eighteen inches of pure death, made from oak, the point had been whittled by Xander until it was needle sharp. He was very proud of it. It cut through the air in a perfectly straight line and plunged into the vampire directly in front of Xander. He exploded silently into dust which drifted gently to the ground. The vampire froze for a second, but it was all the time Willow needed to fire her crossbow and rid the world of another vampire.
In the back of his mind he could hear Giles and Ms. Calendar reach the crescendo of the rite. The vampires heard as well. Xander started to run towards Buffy. He had suddenly remembered
They had been touching.
He heard the world go silent and flung himself at Buffy. He wrapped his arms around his body.
The world went blinding white and the lack of sound was deafening.
The world went dark.
