Xander was sitting in the Quad after school. He was waiting for Buffy and Willow. Buffy's sharp ears picked up a sound behind him. He whirled round and stared into the shadows. It was Angel.
"Hello," Xander said, wildly looking around to see if Buffy or Willow were coming.
"Buffy." He returned. He watched Xander. "What's the matter with you. You seem different."
"Oh, if only you knew the half of it, Vamps." Xander frowned. "What you doing out in the daylight?"
"It's overcast. I an come out, but only for short periods of time. I heard about the fight last night. Are you ok?"
Xander smiled. "Well, it had some unforeseen circumstances, but nothing for a neck-biter to worry about."
Angel frowned. "What's wrong with you? You're different. Nasty like Xander."
"You saying I'm nasty?" Xander almost choked. "I'm not the one who goes round tearing out the throats of innocent human beings, 'with a song in my heart'. I'm not a murderer and I'm not a two hundred year old trying to come on to a seventeen year old." Xander paused for breath.
At least Angel had the decency to look hurt. "Buffy, what's wrong? What have I done to you? I thought you loved me. What happened last night to change you like this?"
Xander stared Angel in the eyes. "Yes, change is the right word. A Slayer does not love a vampire, it is wrong, especially not one like you. You might be a monster with a soul but you are still a monster at heart. If you have a heart." He added. Xander turned away from Angel and walked across the Quad. He could feel Angel's eyes on him all the way.
He kept on walking.
Xander opened the door to the school and went in. He sank down on a bench.
"What have I done?" he whispered.
Buffy would kill him if she found out. Or should he say when. It was not his place to say those things, but he did anyway. Buffy's romantic life was none of his concern. He might love her, but he should not try to break them up.
"I'm sorry, Buffy." He whispered. Then he stood up and went to the library.
