The school morning passed uneventfully. As Buffy had all her lessons with Willow, Xander didn't get lost or walk into the wrong class. He had given Buffy his timetable and hoped she wasn't showing him up too much by actually doing some work.
He luck ran out at lunchtime.
Willow and Xander were walking briskly to the library when Xander ran into Cordy, literally.
"You stupid girl," Cordy hissed as she picked herself off the floor. "Where's your other partner in crime?"
Willow and Xander looked at each other.
"I'm very sorry, Cordelia but I'm afraid Xander is ill today." Xander said. He hoped she wouldn't realise. Mind you, it would be just his luck if Buffy walked round the corner.
Cordelia took one last dismissive glance at them and stalked off without another word.
"Very unlike her not to have the last word." Commented Willow.
"I know," Xander agreed. "I'm in real deep shit here, so deep it's up to my eyebrows and rising. Oh God!" They walked into the library
Buffy was already waiting for them. So was Giles and Ms. Calendar.
"Ah, hello," said Giles when he saw them. "We've been waiting for you."
"Sorry, 'bout that. We've been having Cordy problems. I'm so dead when I'm back in my own body." Xander looked at Buffy. "Can I hire you as my bodyguard, please?"
"Willow, thank you for researching for me last night. I gave Ms. Calendar your information and she has found the ritual." Giles cleared his throat. "Yes, well it seems that something you did last night disturbed a very powerful ritual. Can you remember what happened?"
Xander and Buffy looked at each other. Xander started speaking first. " I was following Buffy when I got jumped by a group of vampires. I'm not sure exactly how many though. They banged my on the head and I think they knocked me out for a little while. When I came round I was tied to a post in the Cemetery and Buffy was kicking undead booty like there was no tomorrow."
" I was following a vampire who was acting suspiciously," added Buffy. "I followed him to the Cemetery and saw Xander tied to a post inside some sorta design that had been laid out on the ground in sticks. It looked like a circle, but in the middle was that three pointed star that vampire, Luke had on his head on the night of the Harvest. Then I threw caution to the wind and leapt in stakes flying."
Ms. Calendar was nodding her head. "It sounds like the vampires were trying to release The Master by body-swapping him with Xander. The Master would be able to move about the earth in Xander's body and Xander would be trapped in the entrance to the Hellmouth. Not a nice state of affairs at all. However, Giles and myself have spoken to some people in England and we can reverse the spell. But we have to have the same conditions as last night. So it means back to the Cemetery and Xander, as you are in Buffy's body you will have to do some Slaying."
"Oh, fantastic," muttered Xander. " I can spot a flaw in your plan. It's quite a big one. I thought a pair of intellects like you two would notice."
Everybody was looking at him. "I can't SLAY!" he almost-yelled.
"But you have staked a couple of vampires in your time," said Willow.
"Yeah, but they were hardly thought out plans."
"I've thought about that," said Ms. Calendar. "We'll help, but you have to be going through the motions of Slaying. Even if you just get one, that's enough."
"I've got the exact time of the flash off the computer records at the police station," said Willow.
"And I have the words of the rite off a colleague in England," added Giles.
The school bell rang for end of lunch.
"Go to class," said Giles. "We'll meet here after school."
