Buffy The Vampire Slayer > BTVS - Season Two
Xander's Ultimate Wish by Kali

Not for the first time Xander wondered what the Hell he was doing there.

"If only I hadn't been in the library. Stupid books, what did I want a textbook for? I never read textbooks! I shoulda borrowed Willow's . . . then I'd never got in this mess."

Xander was tied very tightly to a post and was severely annoyed with himself. He'd come to help Buffy and ended up in this state. Buffy, as usual, was kicking ass. Xander sighed, why was he always the Damsel in Distress? At least Buffy looked the part, tall towers and those dinky medieval hats really did not suit him. He pictured himself more as the knight in shining armour. Oh well.

He turned his attention back to Buffy. How different life could have been if only . . . if only . . .

A loud smash brought his attention back to the present. A vampire exploded into dust as the stake hit his heart. Buffy looked like a warrior Goddess, maybe Diana the Huntress.

Where on Earth did that come from? Probably Willow.

Buffy did look extremely nice though as she drop kicked another vampire and stabbed him with the stiletto heel of her boot. He winced, another explosion and Buffy was turning to the next attacker. They were like a never-ending tide.

Tonight was going to be nice. An evening at The Bronze, then home to bed. He wondered what Cordelia was doing, and what she'd do to him next time she saw him. He'd probably blown it. He imagined her dancing with some gorgeous jock.

"Buffy, please hurry up, I've got a date." Oh, great talking, he thought. So smooth, so charming. So not pathetic.

Buffy glanced over her shoulder, "Yeah, OK." She looked a bit annoyed. He wasn't supposed to be there and she did say that she didn't need anyone, they would only slow her down. Well, she was right.

Buffy took out another vampire and the rest scattered, vanishing into the night. She looked warily around. It wasn't like them to fight and run like that, she was worried. Xander also tried to twist his head around to see what was going on, but he could hardly move.

"If the denizens of the night are gone, can you let me go please?"

Buffy turned to look at him. She did not look happy. Xander started to worry. Buffy approached him, her face like thunder. "What have I told you? You just don't listen. I have enough trouble as it is without having to keep an eye on you as well. I don't need you to protect me." She paused and took a breath. "I don't see why I should let you go, I should leave you here for when they come back."

"You wouldn't do that." Xander grinned.

This infuriated Buffy even more. "Tell me why I wouldn't." Her eyes narrowed.

"Because you wouldn't have anyone to annoy you and who would you take your anger off on?"

"ooooooooh," Buffy was exasperated, but she did untie Xander. "I thought you had a big date tonight?"

"I did, but I thought I'd help save the world instead." Xander puffed out his chest and struck his 'superhero' pose.

"Oh, my hero." She threw back.

"Sarcasm gets you nowhere, not unless you are me, anyway." Just as Xander threw his arm around Buffy's shoulders they were blinded by a bright, piercing white light and thrown to the ground by a silent shock wave.

It all went dark.
