She was confused, she didn't know what to do. Running through the woods as fast as she could, ignoring everything around her. She was focusing on just getting home. She heard the footsteps running after her, trying to catch her. No matter what, she wasn't going to let that thing get her. She had to get home. There she would be safe. She finally reached the edge of the woods. She saw her porch light, almost there. The footsteps were getting louder, closer and closer. Yelling in panic she tried to run faster.
She reached the front door of her house, only to find the door locked. Scared out of her mind, she screamed. She ran to the back door and it was unlocked. She felt relieved and ran inside and locked the door.
Inside her house, the lights were off and it was dark. She felt somewhat safe now, there was no way he could get inside her house, not unless he was invited. She took a deep breath trying to relax. She walked over to a light switch and flicked the light switch up, but the light didn't turn on. Her heart skipped a beat and she hurried into the kitchen to find a flashlight. Searching inside the bottom cupboard, she finally found one. She turned it on and as she did, she heard a noise inside her house. No, it couldnt be. There's no way, she thought panicking again.
She called out into the darkness for her father and her brother. "Dad? Jake? Are you there?"
But there was no answer. She was alone, all alone, except for the creature that was now inside her home, the one place she thought she would be safe. She started to cry, knowing she was going to die. He was inside her house, she could feel it.
She felt weak, why hadn't she listened to her brother? If she did, she might have had a small chance of surviving.
She heard some one enter the kitchen from behind her. She whipped around and there he was, smiling, knowing that he had won.
"How...how did you...?" she asked, her fear getting the better of her.
"I was invited..."he said, enjoying the rush of fear the girl felt when she saw him.
"By who?" she asked afraid to know the answer.
"Your father. I told him I was a friend from school. He was really nice to me...until I broke his neck, he said, smirking.
"No...." she said. She fell to her knees.
"Just think, if you didn't run from me in the first place, your father would still be alive, he said, playing with her mind, weakening her even further.
She started to cry.
"Now, I can end your suffering," he said. He picked her up, she tried to push him away but couldn't, he was too strong. He leaned in toward her neck and her vision blurred, started to get darker, and before she knew it could see no more...
Jessica woke up from the dream, sweating and out of breath. This was the second week that she has had this dream, she was losing sleep because of it. It was the same dream everynight. The dream always seemed so real, then she would wake up the same way and the next night the same thing. Sometimes she would see further into her dream and learn more. She would see a little more about the characters and learn about them. The one bad character, though, she was never able to see him clearly. She had this dream every night ever since she moved.
Jessica used to live in Grandes Ville, but had to move because her mom got a new job in Riversdale. Riversdale was too far away for her mom to travel to everyday to get to work, so as a result, they had to move. She had to leave all of her friends behind and now, along with the new town, she had to make new friends. Jessica missed her friends and her old school, but she new that she had to move on.
Today she would be starting the first day of her new school, she didn't even want to think about it. It was the middle of the year for everyone else, but for her it was the first day. New school, new life, great. Her mom was more enthusiastic than she was.
"Jessica! Are you awake? It's almost time for school!" her mom yelled up the stairs.
Jessica sighed. This is going to be a great day, she thought. She walked sluggishly over to the mirror in the room and looked at the reflection that was looking back at her. She saw that her normaly straight bolde hair was all over the place. Her eyes, deep blue and almost hidden completely behind some fly away hair, still looked tired. Her slim figure was slouched and looked lazy. This may take a while, she thought as she grabbed some clean cloths and walked into the bathroom, which was conveniently right across from her room. After she was dressed, her hair neatly pulled back and her eyes fully visible now, she went downstairs to have breakfast.
When she got down there, her mom was just finishing the special breakfast for her daughter, Jessica. Eggs, bacon, and toast.
"Thanks mom," said Jessica as her mom handed her a plate loaded with eveything on it.
"Are you excited?" asked her mom, starting to clean up the kitchen.
"Oh yeah, I'm so excited I can barely hide it." said Jessica sarcastically.
Her mom put her hands on her hips. "I'm serious, she said.
"Well its kind of hard to be excited about being a nobody in a new school." said Jessica.
"Oh come on it's not that bad, you'll fit in, everybody likes the new kid, her mom said encouragingly.
"Thanks but, times have changed since your time." said Jessica.
Her mom smiled at her "Come on," she said, "It's time to go."
And so, Jessica arrived at her new school, Riversdale High, which was going to be the beginning of her new life. As she got out of her mom's car, she saw clusters of students talking with each other. They were laughing and joking, another typical day in high school, nothing new.
Jessica felt awkward walking down the sidewalk and up the stairs into the school, she felt like everyone was watching her. She liked it when people watched her, she liked to be the center of attention, but today, she felt oddly shy. She had to get to the administrations office, to register herself as a student of Riversdale High, but she couldn't find it. She walked up and down halls, trying to find it but failed. She kept searching but had no luck. Where is it? she thought. It's usually near the school lobby. The first bell rang. Jessica sighed, she was going to be late for her first class, great.
"Lost? said a voice from behind her.
She jumped and turned around, there was a really cute guy standing there looking at her, waiting for an answer. He had black medium length hair with flecks of brown in it and dark brown eyes and he had a very cute smile. Jessica felt color rush to her cheeks as she tried to answer.
"Ye...yes, I can't find the administrations office." she said shaking her nervousness away, she could do that sometimes, when she knew she had to impress someone.
"Well it's just down the hall, I could take you there if you want, he said smiling nicely, Jessica felt like she was going to melt into her shoes.
"Sure, that would be great." she said returning his smile with one of her own.
They walked down the hall together and finally reached the office. She was right, it was near the school's lobby. She felt embaressed, but she shook it off quickly hoping the guy didn't notice.
"My name is Nick, he said holding open the office door for her.
"Thanks," said Jessica. "My name is Jessica."
"Jessica," said Nick. "Cool, I'll see you around?"
"Yeah," she said, getting happier by the moment.
He smiled and left her to register as a student of Riversdale High. With that done, she headed off to her first class, English. English was in room 409 and right now she was in the 200 hall. Just as she suspected, she was going to be late.
When she finally got to room 409, she walked in and every one looked at her.
"Miss. Steel, how nice of you to join us." said her English teacher.
"Sorry," she said, "Got lost." There were some snickers in the class, but the teacher didn't care to notice.
"I am Mr. Burns as you would have guessed, your English teacher, said Mr. Burns. "Please take a seat in one of the rows."
Jessica headed to one of the empty seats in the back. Mr. Burns started to teach and went into a long lecture about how people don't take English seriously. Jessica drifted off, She started to think about her dream and wondered how much further she was going to go, she snapped out of her little day dream to find another new kid entering the room. He was pretty good looking, with light brown hair, that was just above his ear and he had silverish gray eyes. But he didn't look that friendly.
"Ahhhh....another late student and who are you?" asked Mr. Burns.
"Jake Andrews." he said
"Well Mr. Andrews, please sit down in an empty seat, said Mr. Burns.
Jessica looked around. The only empty seat was next to hers. Jake came over and set his bag beside the desk and sat down. She felt awkward sitting there. Jake didn't look like a very happy person.
The rest of English class passed slowly, but finally, the bell rang. Jessica jumped out of her seat and hurried to her next class, which was Biology.
Jessica walked to Mrs. Crane's biology class in room 403. She walked in and sat down at a desk in the middle of the classroom. Once everyone settled down, Mrs. Crane told everyone they were doing a lab today, the class groaned but Mrs. Crane said that it would be a fun lab.
"Now class, pick your partners, you'll be in groups of three today." said Mrs. Crane smiling.
Jessica looked around at the students who immediately got up out of their chairs to pick their partners. Jessica was the only one who didn't stand up. She didn't know anybody. She sighed. It's not like she wasn't expecting it. She thought she would end up working alone when a girl with long black hair and guy with brownish-orange hair came up to her.
"Hey. You want to be partners with us?" asked the guy looking friendly.
"Sure, I was beginning to feel left out, said Jessica smiling coolly.
"I'm Matt, he said.
"And I'm Ashley," said the girl, also looking friendly.
"Hi," said Jessica starting to feel welcome. "I'm Jessica."
The lab was about testing certain foods to see how healthy they were. Even though some of the class was trying their best to make it seem like a horrible lab, the rest actually was having some fun. Jessica, along with Matt and Ashley were some of the few people who were having fun.
Matt, after they tested the food, would eat it. His lips were red from the strawberries. Matt was really funny, he messed around a lot. Ashley, Jessica noticed, was really smart. She answered all of the lab questions and was very nice. They would talk about stuff together, it was like they had been friends for every long time and not just for one class period. Not bad for my first day, Jessica thought.
After the bell rang, Matt and Ashley asked Jessica if she would sit with them at lunch, since they found out they had the same lunch period. Jessica said she would and goodbye to them. She went to her next class, which was Math.
Jessica walked to the room and was one of the first ones there. She sat at a seat in the middle of the classroom.
She was pretty happy now, she had made two new friends, three considering Nick. Speaking of Nick, he had just walked into the classroom. Jessica's heart jumped, but she kept her cool and smiled. Nick noticed that she was there and walked over to the empty seat beside her.
"Hey," he said giving her one of his many cute smiles. "How's your first day going?"
"Good, better than I thought it would be, said Jessica.
"Yeah I know what you mean, I've been a new kid too, more than once." said Nick, rolling his eyes.
"Really? Your parents move around a lot too? asked Jessica.
"Actually, it's just me and my aunt. My parents were killed a long time ago." he said.
"Oh," said Jessica. She knew she had said the wrong thing. "I'm sorry I didn't...."
"Know, I know, it's not your fault, he said finishing her sentence, knowing she felt uneasy.
They talked for a little while, Nick was trying to keep the conversation going. The teacher came in, she told everyone to quiet down.
"I am Mrs. Gale, for any new students. Today we are going to learn Factoring."
So Jessica and Nick spent the rest of class taking notes. They had a couple of minutes before the bell rang to talk and when the bell did ring, they said goodbye and headed to their next class.
This was Jessica's last class until lunch. She had Art, but only on A days. Tomorrow she would have Study Hall instead of Art, since tomorrow would be a B day. That was the schools system, A and B days. Today was an A day so the classes she had on A days were the classes she would go to today.
She walked into the Art studio, the tables were all lined up, each with a piece of paper on it. There were already some people sitting at the tables. Jake was one of them. He looked a little relaxed and a little friendlier.
"Ahhh...Jessica...let's see...yes...you sit next to Jake, over there." said the art teacher Mr. Stone pointing to the chair next to Jake.
Jessica went over and sat in the chair, she didn't feel as uncomfortable as she did before.
"Hey," he said. "I'm Jake. Aren't you in my English class? You are the girl who sits next to me."
Jessica was surprised. He spoke to her.
"Um...yeah, that's me." she said. "You didn't look like you were in a good mood this morning."
"Well...let's just say I'm not really a morning person. Getting up and going to school doesn't really help either. Besides, I don't think anyone is really happy to be here, he said smiling.
Wow, she thought, he's not what I expected.
They worked together as partners for their first project. They had to draw a person in the class, so while they sketched, they talked. Jessica scrunched her nose as she looked at the outcome of her drawing of Jake. It looked like a melon with shoulders.
Jake tried to make her think it was good but in the end, he couldn't stop laughing. "Is that what I really look like?" he said laughing.
"Well if you think you are so good, let me see yours. she said challenging him.
When he showed her his, she was taken aback. It was good. Not just good, very good, it looked just like her.
She couldn't stay anything.
"What is it? Is it that bad? he said smiling.
"Um...no its good, it's very good. I can see why you're in art class."
"Oh come on its not that good. he said smiling.
Jake showed her different ways on how to draw a human head so it wouldn't look like a melon. Soon the bell rang and they left together. Jake had lunch 7th period, so he wasn't able to come to lunch with Jessica.
Jessica met up with Ashley and Matt and they got in line to get their lunch. Todays special was extra greasy mystery meat.
Matt pocked his meat and it jiggled. They decided not to eat the "mystery" meat and for the rest of lunch they were hungry.
Jessica said goodbye to Ashley, she had Math next, Jessica and Matt both had Spanish. So after they said goodbye to Ashley, the headed down to class, Matt leading the way.
When they got into class, Jessica saw Nick. He was in her class too. He saw her and walked up to her.
"Hey Jessica." he said. "I didn't know we had the same class."
"Yeah, cool huh?" she said.
"Yeah, come sit over here." he said, he looked at Matt. "You can come too."
Matt looked annoyed. Jessica could tell that he really didn't like Nick. "That's ok. I see some where else I can sit." he said trying to look normal.
"Ok," Jessica said. "Then I'll see you after class?"
"Yeah." Matt said walking over across the room to a seat.
She followed Nick to a seat by the window. Nick sat down and started to talk.
"This class is supposed to be really easy, especially with the teacher we have. She's ok, it's just that she makes everything seem so hard. We always go to the computer lab, she gives us these stupid little assignments. It will be a miracle if we pass the final exam."
"So what? Is she one of the teachers who think they are teaching when they really arent? asked Jessica.
"Yeah pretty much. he looked at the clock on the wall. "She's always late."
"What's her name?"
"Mrs. Withersmere." he said.
The late bell rang and a couple of minutes later, Mrs. Withersmere came into the classroom.
"Get your stuff," she said. "We're going to the lab."
Nick rolled his eyes. "What did I tell you?"
When they got to the computer lab, Mrs. Withersmere told them what they were to do.
"Today we are going to review reflexive verbs and chores you do around the house. Can anyone tell me what limpiar el cuarto de bano means?"
Some of the class raised their hands. Jessica, who didn't raise her hand, of course, was called on.
"Miss. Steel, how about you tell us." said Mrs. Withersmere.
"Ummmm..." said Jessica. She didn't remember.
Nick tried to give her help, but Jessica couldn't understand him.
"Nick? Do you want to answer for her? asked Mrs. Withersmere.
"Ummm...it means to clean the bathroom." he said. He gave Jessica an apologetic look.
"Very good, Mrs. Steel I suggest you catch up on your Spanish, said the teacher. "Now on your computer go to..."
She told the students what to do on the computer. Like Nick said, it wasn't that hard. It was kind of pointless.
After she finished, the bell rang. She left the class and met up with Matt.
"Why didn't you want to sit with us?" she asked him.
"I don't really like him." he answered.
"Why?"
"Well he isn't really that nice to me and plus he has only been here a month and he acts like he owns the place."
"He's only been here a month?"
"Yeah, he was the new kid until you and Jake came a long. Nick looked like he came here waiting for someone."
"You know Jake?" asked Jessica.
"Yeah, he's in my Math class."
They soon separated and went to their next class. Jessica had Health next with Mr. Gale. The class passed quickly and soon she was on her way to Global, her last class.
When she got to class she saw that Jake, Ashley, Matt and Nick were all in her class. She noticed that Jake was sitting on the opposite side of the room from Nick. Doesn't any of my new friends like him? Ashley was sitting in the middle of the class.
Mrs. Marters saw Jessica come in and told her where to sit. It was in one of the front desks near Jake.
When Jessica went over to her desk, Jake greeted her with a hey and class began.
When the bell rang, Jessica was happy to get out of class, they spent the whole time taking notes.
Nick called her over as they left the class.
"Hey," he said. "I was wondering, if you are not doing anything after school, if you would like to do something?"
Jessica smiled. "Sure, that would be cool."
They went to The Braze, a place where students hung out after school. It's where they held the dances and parties.
Nick and Jessica sat down at a table. It was a really nice place. She liked it, at her old school, they didn't have a place like this.
"Do you want something to drink?" asked Nick.
"Sure," she began to pull out some money but Nick stopped her.
"I'll pay for it, he said.
"Are you sure?" she asked.
"Yeah, I mean I invited you here."
He left to get the drinks and Jessica waited. While she was waiting, Jake came over.
"Jake! Hi, what are you doing here? Jessica said.
"Well this is a public place isn't it? I just thought I'd come and check it out. Everyone said it was a cool place to come to, he said. "If you want me to leave, I will."
"No, no. It's just that it was a surprise to see you. Would you like to sit with us?"
"Us? he asked.
"Yeah, I'm here with Nick." she said.
"Oh, well I would like to but I have to go home and help my mom unpack." he said. "But I'll see you later?"
"Yeah." she said a little disappointed.
Jake said goodbye and he left. Nick came back after Jake left with their drinks.
"You know Jake?" asked Nick.
"Yeah. Why? Don't tell me you don't like him, she said.
"Well he is not really my favorite person, said Nick.
"Why?"
"Well I used to date his sister, when I broke it off, Jake got mad at me. So he's been mean to me ever since." said Jake a little ashamed.
"Oh, " Jessica said. She looked at the clock and notice it was almost four thirty. "Wow, I need to go," she said. "I have to go home and help unpack, I mean we did just move."
"Could I maybe help?" asked Nick.
"Yeah, I'm sure my mom will let you," said Jessica. Nick smiled.
They got to her house 10 minutes later, her house wasn't that far away from The Braze, but it was around five and it was getting dark.
"Wait here, said Jessica when they got to the front door of her house. "Let me see if it's ok with my mom."
Jessica went inside and found her mom in the kitchen setting things up.
"Hey mom, I have a friend waiting outside, he was wondering if he could help us unpack." said Jessica.
"He?" asked her mom.
"His name is Nick, He's really nice, you can trust him." said Jessica hopefully.
"All right, but only for an hour, its getting late." said her mom.
Jessica went back outside to get Nick.
"She said it was ok, but only for an hour, she told Nick.
"Cool." he said smiling up at her. Jessica was expecting him to come up to the door where she was standing but he didn't move. It looked like he was waiting for something.
"Well?" asked Jessica. Nick looked shy. "It's ok. You don't have to be shy."
He looked up at her unsure.
"You can come in., she said.
The look of being unsure and shy in Nick disappeared almost instantly. He smiled at her. The smile kind of freaked her out.
