Spike let go of Dawn, staring at the young girl with wonder. She was so strong for her age, but he had to remind himself, she was her age. She had a lot of Buffy in her, a lot more than he would have imagined, but he also had to remind himself, she wasn't Buffy. She was Dawn and Dawn was 15. He was trying to go out with a 15 year old sister of a Slayer, no wonder no one was really open to it...
He could understand everyone's concern. It's not as if he gave them a lot to trust in the first place. "Dawn, I'm sorry about... If I made you feel like all that I said to Xander was true, it really wasn't... I just didn't want him thinking it was. 'Cause you're... you know... You and I'm... you know... me."
"You said you loved me."
"And I do."
"You love me... like you love.... Buffy?"
"More, more than I love Buffy! I love you more than I've ever loved anyone and I don't know why, and I don't really wanna know, but I love you more than... I dunno, but I love you."
"And I love you. You were the first person I ever properly loved."
"Yeah, but there's not a whole lot we can really do about it, niblet. Not a lot at all."
"Why not? What's stopping love?"
"Nothing, but there are a million things stopping *us*!"
"What? If it can't stop the love... If it isn't stopping this feeling I have for you, than what's stopping *us*?"
"Dawn, I can't..."
"Why *not*? Don't you want me?"
"I do! I do!" Spike ran his fingers through his hair. "I *do*! But not like this! And not now! If I could, Dawn, when you're older, when you're ready, when you can! We can't just have a big spasm in an alley! It won't be the way I want it for you!"
"But what about the way I want it?"
"I don't care about the way you want it. You're young and you don't even know the way you want it because you haven't had it any way!"
"I know the way I want it. I think about these kinds of things. Spike, please. I promise I'm ready."
"You can't promise something like that. You can't-" Dawn slid her hands down Spike's pants to contact with the cold skin of his waist. He stopped talking and gave her what he thought was his best stern fatherly look, but Dawn only tugged on his pouting lip. She smiled and giggled. Spike couldn't stand it. He loved her. And she loved him. And there was no way she was going to give up. And there was no way he was going to let her.
Spike wrapped his arms around the small of her back, leaning in and covering her thin, long neck with soft, cold kisses. Dawn shuddered, but then moved his head to focus on her lips. He kissed her full on and for the first time in a long time, Dawn felt like she knew everything would be okay. Like what she was doing was right and that she was going to be happy and free and young and loved forever.
Spike ran his fingers up and down her stomach. She moaned and shivered, but the cold won't bother her for long. She would heat up Spike's body and it won't feel so strange. The two melded in the dark alley, in the cold night, but it was the lightest and warmest moment of either of their lives.
*~*~*~*~*
Dawn lay nuzzled against Spike's body, shivering. "Love, we better get some clothes for you. Those are all wet," Spike said lovingly. Dawn smiled warmly, her head still reeling from the whole situation. She was even more in love. But she knew maybe Spike was less in love with her. She hadn't been good. She knew she hadn't been good. It was her first time, there was no way she could have been good. But maybe, just maybe, Spike still loved her after that.
Spike finally, slowly stood up. He wished he could have lain there forever, Dawn breathing against him, leg wrapped around him. It would have been heaven, but he knew he had to get her in some nice warm clothes before she got sick from a cold or even... Well, he didn't want her sick with anything because they had chosen the coldest night of the year in California to make love in alley.
"Do we have to?" Dawn grumbled, staring at her new lover with blissful, misty eyes.
"Yes, we have to. I can carry you. The cemetery's not far at all."
"I would like that," Dawn smiled. Spike slid his hands underneath her, supporting her upper back and lower waist.
"Comfortable?" he asked. It wasn't as if she were even the least bit heavy, he could adjust however needed to make her feel comfortable.
Dawn nuzzled against Spike's chest and fell asleep before she could answer. Spike chuckled. He still wasn't sure what they had done was such a good idea, but he was so glad he had decided to do it. Dawn may not be the same Dawn, but maybe she was still a Dawn he could love. Still the same innocent little girl he had fallen for.
*~*~*~*~*
Dawn woke up wearing one of Spike's black shirts that wasn't so tight on her as it was on him, and some baggy gym red shorts he had put on her. She found she wasn't wearing underwear, but it didn't bother her. The gym shorts were very smooth and silky against her bare skin. Spike was lying next to her, snoring. Dawn giggled. She decided she better let him sleep. He had looked fairly tired himself last night. She found, to her pleasure, he wasn't wearing anything at all.
"Shouldn't be looking under the covers like that, niblet," Spike grunted. The sound of his voice made her start.
"You're *awake*?"
"Have been the whole time you were sleeping. Nasties like my crypt, had to make sure you were safe."
"You didn't have to do that. Or this," Dawn indicated her clothes. "But what about Buffy? She's going to kill you!"
"Yeah, I know. But we don't have to tell her everything. I'll say... I don't know what I'll say, but I'm sure it'll never be the truth."
"I didn't mean about that. I meant not being home all night, stupid," Dawn laughed.
"Oh..." Spike smiled at his own humble stupidity. He then grabbed Dawn and held her against him, covering himself in her girlish scent. "I love you," he whispered softly into her hair.
Dawn turned around and stared into those sapphire eyes she knew and loved so well. "I love you, too, Spike." Spike lightly kissed her on the forehead.
"You better be getting home, niblet."
"I know, but I don't wanna leave. Can't I just stay here?"
"No. I wish you could, but you have a Slayer sister who might not like that idea as much as we do. You better be tottling off, you want me to see you home?"
"You... um... can't. It's daylight."
"Oh, right. Well, I must have dozed off then. Well, you can wait until nightfall, can't you?"
"I could wait till the end of the world." Dawn wrapped herself in Spike's embrace and sighed. This was perfect. More perfect than she ever could have imagined.
