Angel watched Buffy leave her house. He had been following her ever since she got to Sunnydale. He was drawn to her, but he did not know why, but still as soon as it was dark he was on her trail. He followed her to the movies, to the mall and tonight to the Bronze. She was so familiar, but he couldn't place where he had seen her before. He had seen so many beautiful women in the centuries he had been a vampire, their faces have merged into a blur.

Tonight he was following her again, this time there was a reason. He had found out who and what she was and he needed to speak to her. He needed to make sure she knew the danger she was in, he did not know why he was doing this, her kind and his did not traditionally get on. He was walking about a hundred yards behind her when she ducked into an alleyway. So, he mused. She was aware of him. That was a good sign. He followed her.

When he turned into the alley, she had disappeared. He was impressed, he couldn't even sense her. She had power. He walked slowly along the alleyway when suddenly something heavy smacked into his back and he was knocked to the ground. When the shock cleared his sense he saw Buffy staring down at him, with a foot placed just hard enough on his chest to let him know she meant business.

Angel chuckled to himself. He smiled up at Buffy. "Ah, heh. Is there a problem, ma'am?"

Buffy stared at him. "Yeah, there's a problem. Why are you following me?"

Angel had a sudden flash of memory, the darkened alleyway in Galway, his firstmeal: the blonde prostitute. He memory faded as soon as it began, but he knew where he had seen her before. He smiled. "I know what you're thinking. Don't worry, I don't bite." Buffy looked at him, but took her foot off his chest and let him get up. Angel made a big show of looking her up and down, she did not back down under his scrutiny, though. That impressed him. "Truth is, I thought you'd be taller, or bigger muscles and all that. You're pretty spry, though."

They exchanged banalities, Angel searching his memories all the while. He knew he had seen her before Galway. He kept getting tantalising images of a medieval manor house but they were always just out of his reach. Buffy started to walk away, saying she did not want to be involved; Angel's mind snapped back to the present. "Do you really think that's an option anymore? You're standing at the Mouth of Hell. And it's about to open."

He reached into this jacket pocket and pulled out a small jewellery box. Carelessly he threw it at Buffy. "Don't turn your back on this. You've gotta be ready."

"What for?"

"For the Harvest."

"Who are you?"

Angel prudently hid a smile. "Let's just say..." he paused while he searched for the right words. "I'm a friend." He turned to leave, he was getting hungry, and he had a lot of thinking to do.

"Yeah, well, maybe I don't want a friend." The blonde girl retorted.

Angel turned back and stared at her, he half smiled. "I didn't say I was yours." He turned and vanished into the night.

As he walked back to his basement flat he thought about the exchange. Inside that jewellery box was a silver cross. It was very old, and it could be considered a family heirloom, if he had any family left. It belonged to Willamina, he took it off her body when he realised what he had done to her. He had loved his sister and he had killed her. It was something he felt terrible guilt for, maybe that was why he had taken the cross; even though it had burnt his fingers when he had removed it. He sighed. Life was very complicated for a vampire with a soul, a vampire who could feel guilt and pain.

What would happen now? Something had drawn him to the Hellmouth hut he did not know what. He was almost certain, though, that it was the same thing that pulled this Vampire Slayer here as well. Why were they being brought together? Bus friends looked familiar too. He did not know their names but their faces plucked at his memories. All of them were so familiar. What was going on?

He sighed again and forced his concerns from his mind. He would worry about them tomorrow, now he had to feed.

The darkness surrounded the vampire in its embrace.
