It is believed by some cultures that there are a finite number of souls and that a soul enters a body because it has a task to perform. It will go through millennia in different bodies until it completes it's task, whereupon it will enter a higher level of enlightenment.
However, not all souls are singular. Some souls have a great affinity to each other - there is a connection between them that can not be broken.
This is a curse as well as a blessing; most souls are 'good', travelling up the karma until it reaches enlightenment, but other are 'evil', fighting the 'good' souls trying to stop them from performing their tasks.
There are four souls in particular that have been bound to each other through the millennia, 3 'good' souls, 1 'bad'. The bodies the souls currently inhabit are well known to us. Throughout the centuries they come together, but each time their task is foiled. This is their story.
