"Another body. He's just leaving them out for me to find, isn't he." Buffy's voice made it clear that it wasn't a question.
"Buff, you've got to admit... It's getting worse." Xander's voice was a little shaky.
"He's right," agreed Cordelia. "I mean, he's losing what little taste he had in the first place. These clothes are so from the discount rack at Sear's. Why won't he kill the fashionable people anymore? Is he prejudiced or something?" Xander gave her a look, glad to return to something normal--insulting his girlfriend.
"No, Cordy, I meant the way that he's doing this."
She considered it a minute. "Oh, yeah... That too."
"Buffy, why's he doing this?" Willow had caught a glimpse of the corpse, and had avoided looking at it ever since.
"To get to me. He's not. It's getting to annoy me, though."
"Maybe that's what he's trying to do now."
"He isn't, Will. He wants to throw me off, and that's when he'll make his move. I've read about it... About what he did to all of those other people, and the slayers that had to face him... His advantage has always been that they were scared of them. He isn't getting that advantage this time."
"But, Buffy..." Willow pointed at the body without looking at it.
"I know. It doesn't matter."
"Come on, Buff. It's getting late. We'd better get going. Your mom may flip out if she catches you sneaking in."
"That's true. But..." She looked around regretfully.
"You aren't going to find him tonight. Angel won't show until he wants to be found."
"Yeah. And, I need to relieve Giles of Oz duty." Oz had been locked in the cage in the library during full moons ever since he'd discovered that he was a werewolf. Giles usually watched him, but sometimes, Willow would take over.
"Fine. One last sweep--"
"Buffy!" squealed Willow, pointing to something behind her best friend.
Without even turning around, Buffy thrust a stake into the vampire's heart, dusting it before she could see it.
"Oh, man," said Xander. "Oh, man."
"What?" Buffy looked at him.
"That... That looked just like..."
"Buffy, it was Jesse."
"But...." Buffy looked first at Xander, then at Willow, then back at Xander. "But Jesse's dead. You killed him last year... You guys remember, it was at the Harvest!"
"I know. But Buffy, it was definitely Jesse." Xander's face was pale enough that he could've been a vampire himself.
"So... Now the undead have a get out of hell free card?" Buffy quipped, sounding grim.
"Buffy, this isn't good. I mean, if Jesse can come back, then any of the vamps that you've dusted can come back, too. What if the master returns?" Willow looked extremely worried.
"Let's go. We need to talk to Giles. Maybe he can tell us about this return of the damned thing."
