Part Five

The Prophecy

Leading the way down the passage, Xander looked to eitherside of himself, somehow sensing the presence of Vampers down the myriad of side-tunnels they passed. Yet somehow, the Vampers felt apprehensive about approaching the gang. Xander could sense that. In fact, he could sense a lot of things now that he had become one with the vampire Alex. He chuckled to himself as he felt the powerful vampire blood course through his veins, for with the reawakening of Alex, Xander’s body had quickly accustomed itself to house the demon again. The only bad thing about the entire experience was the memories. Thousands of horrid visions flashed through his head as he saw the things that Alexus had commited while still an evil vampire.

< Aye, tis painful Xander. No matter how many people Alexus – I, killed, I see every single one of them each night. I wish that my curse was not yours to bear as well… > the voice of Alex echoed within Xander’s head.

Xander suddenly stopped and turned around to see the rest of the group – Cordy the Slayer, Buffy and Heinrich. He hadn’t told them what had happened while he had been unconscious, but he could sense that Cordy knew. Taking a deep breath, for he still needed to breath, Xander halted the other three.

“Okay everyone, listen up. Just down this tunnel is the entrance to Prophetville. This guy is a real mean bastard, he’s killed me once and could easily kill one of you. Now here is the plan. We will sneak quietly down the tunnel till we reach a large sewer inlet. There are two Vampers standing guard in that position. Cordy, as Slayer you can take them out. Heinrich and Buffy can come with me, into a side tunnel that will take us just behind the Prophet’s throne. When I give the word we will jump out and attack. Cordy, you will come in through the front way and stake the Vamper guarding that entrance. Heinrich and Buffy, you stake the two Vampers that are patrolling the back part of the lair. I will take on the Prophet himself, who shall be sitting in his throne. Is that clear people?” Xander smiled to himself as he saw the looks on everyone’s face.

“Uhhh…..yeah….” Cordy, Buffy and Heinrich replied at the same time.

Silently they did as planned, with Cordy quickly dusting the two Vampers on guard – exactly where Xander had sensed them to be. Meanwhile Xander led Buffy and Heinrich through the side tunnel, its side glistening with gunk. Finally they came to a part of the tunnel where the bricks had fallen down to reveal the Prophet’s lair. Just as Xander had said, the Prophet sat in his throne, while two Vampers patrolled the area. Xander relaxed himself and allowed Alex to awaken the demon within. With a shudder, Xander’s face contorted into the visage of a demon. Smiling he faced the others who gave out a gasp.

“Time to go…”

With a roar, Xander leapt into the lair and onto the throne dais, causing the Prophet to leap up in shock. Meanwhile Cordy appeared on the otherside and unnatural screams could be heard as she dusted the Vamper on guard duty. Buffy and Heinrich entered into combat with the two patrolling Vampers. This left only Xander and the Prophet to duke it out at the foot of the throne.

“At last you have come Seeker! I had prophesised this day!” the Prophet, smiled revealing black teeth. “Yet why do you attack me? It is the Slayer that you should kill!”

Xander looked over at Cordy as she helped Buffy dust her Vamper. He turned back to Dorian and smiled. “Man, you should really get those teeth checked….” He punched the Prophet in the face, “…and that Prophecy of yours too…”

And so the dance of battle commenced, with first Xander and then the Prophet hitting the other. Yet Xander was worried, with every blow landed upon him by the Prophet, he could feel Alex’s soul beginning to falter and give way to the demon. It seemed that Dorian had the power to destroy one’s soul - a nasty thing in the hands of a vampire.

“You fool! My prophecy was correct, your soul grows weaker with each wound I inflict. Soon there will be nothing left and the demon within shall be re-awoken. The Seeker you shall become and the Slayer will die!” the Prophet laughed as he laid yet another right hook into Xander’s jaw.

Roaring with anger, Xander did a snap kick right into Dorian’s jaw, sending the Prophet reeling. Following his attack up with a jab just below the ribs, Xander managed to wind the evil vampire.

“And now, for my express flight home…” Xander felt instinct take over him as he lowered himself down to bite into the cold flesh of the Prophet.

The ancient vampire shrieked in terror as he jugular was slashed and his lifeless, black blood spilled into Xander’s mouth. Slowly, Xander sucked away at the Prophet, as he felt the demon within grow faint as it died. Moaning, Xander dropped the Prophet as he felt a sick feeling in his stomach. His felt dizzy and his vision began to blur. A great pain rushed through his body and he felt as if he was dying. Just barely, he could hear the Prophet’s scream as a stake pierced his heart. Finally Xander passed from the realm of consciousness and entered into the dark maze of unconsciousness.

He awoke with a start. His head was pounding and his stomach felt as if it had been torn apart by a hook. And yet Xander was alive. Slowly he got to his feet, his head was still sore from the encounter with the baseball bat. Then he stopped and looked around. He was in the Bronze. It was daytime, so the place was more like a tomb than a nightclub…but he was in the Bronze. And it wasn’t the Bronze of that other world, it was his Bronze. He leapt into the air and gave a joyous cheer, scaring one of the cleaners in the process. Checking his watch, he saw that it was about an hour before school. He could make it home and to the shower in no time. As he left the Bronze, Xander smiled to himself. He couldn’t wait to tell everyone back at school.

“…and then I woke up in the Bronze this morning.” Xander sighed with contentment as he finished his story.

Yet, everyone else was looking at him with very displeased faces. Xander was confused, they didn’t believe him! But surely Willow would…

“Needless to say, that um...ah, was a very intriguing tale, but that is no excuse for not helping us last night.” Giles looked down at Xander with a frown.

“B-but its all true, all of it!” Xander was in a fit of despair, they had to believe him.

“We’re your friends, you can tell us the truth, that you skipped graveyard duty with the rest of us and instead went to the Bronze with that girl…who later dumped you, which is just what you deserved for deserting us.” Buffy looked disapprovingly at Xander.

“A-And this talk about Prophets and vampires who can exist in sunlight, it’s all preposterous!” Giles fiddled with his glasses, which had fallen off due to his head shaking in disbelief at Xander’s cheek.

“No, I think the worst part is Cordelia being the Slayer a-and me being some computer freak – sorry, Willow, I meant computer genius…” Buffy smiled at Willow, but frowned at Xander.

“That’s okay Buff…I’m still getting over the fact that I was popular!” Willow did not believe Xander as he had hoped.

Xander despaired, there must be someway to convince them. Then it suddenly dawned on him. With a smile, Xander turned back to everyone and put his game face on. Buffy gasped, Willow shrieked and Giles fainted clear away.

< Xander my boy, this looks like the start of a beautiful relationship… >
