Part Seven

"I may have found something." Devin said. She and Giles had been studying the books she had brought over for about an hour. "It doesn't say anything about how to actually grant the wish, but it says here that I can read people's minds. That's how I knew about Buffy and everything. I just thought I was psychic or something."
"Well, that is useful," Giles said. "but we need to find out how to use your powers. Here's something. All you have to do is concentrate on the person's wish, and call on the past Givers to give you the power to grant the wish. If you truly want to grant the wish, they will give it to you."
"Cool. So, what do I do now? I'm not sure if it would work if I tried it. I need a test wish."
"Well, that can wait. I have to-"
"Hey Giles! Hi Devin." Buffy said as she walked in with Angel.
"Hello Buffy, hello Angel. We were just discussing...uh, text books. I was getting Devin some text books. So have you two been training?" Giles said.
"Yeah. So do we know when I'm going to be facing him?" Buffy asked.
"Soon. About a week, possibly two." Giles answered.
"Well, that gives us some time to train more. We better go." Angel said, ushering Buffy out the door.
"What did you do that for?" Devin asked.
"Uh, do what?"
"Tell them you were getting me text books." Devin clarified.
"Well, if they knew what you could do, you know they would want you to turn Angel into a human." Giles answered.
"And what, pray tell, would be wrong with that?" Devin asked.
"Well, if he was human, Buffy would want to go on dates and such. Last time she went on a date, she nearly got the poor lad killed."
"But he didn't know about Buffy being the Slayer and everything, right? Angel knows."
"Yes, but he would want to protect her. I don't know how strong he would be if he wasn't a vampire. He could end up getting himself killed. If that happened, Buffy would be devastated and either kill herself or retire for good from the Slayer profession. The world would be in grave danger. Another Slayer would have to be trained, and it would take awhile. Meanwhile, the vampires could take over the world."
"Aren't you overreacting just a bit?" Devin asked. "We don't know that he would be weak as a human. He looks pretty strong to me."
"It doesn't matter. You are not going to try anything."Giles said firmly.
"Sure." Devin said with a sly smile.

Buffy and Angel trained endlessly for the next two weeks. During their breaks, Angel helped her with her history homework. While Buffy and Angel trained, Giles helped Devin with her newfound powers. Finally, it was time. Buffy was standing face to waist with the Anointed One, crossbow in hand, and a stake up each sleeve. He had an army of about 20 minions standing behind him, waiting until he gave the command to attack. Angel, Xander, Willow, Devin, and Giles were there to help with them. Colin raised his arm, and the vampires began to attack. Buffy and Colin circled each other, both looking for a weak spot. Finally, Buffy attacked with a jab to his face. But he caught her hand and flipped her onto the ground. She tried to get up, and he kicked her back down. He kicked her head, and she blacked out for a few seconds.Meanwhile, there were about 12 of his minions left. Each of Buffy's friends was fighting one of them. Colin noticed that Angel had killed most of them. He made eye contact with one of his followers and pointed to Angel. The vampire nodded and signalled for the other vampires to follow him. They walked toward Angel and ganged up on him. One of them grabbed the stake Angel was pointing at him, and turned it aroundso it went through Angel's heart. He howled in pain and fell to the ground and turned to dust.
Buffy saw this and yelled out his name right before he hit the ground. "Okay, now I'm pissed." She said loudly, lettting anger hold back her tears. "You killed my boyfriend! Now you're going to pay!" She flipped over to Colin and knocked him to the ground. She thrust a stake down and it went through his heart. Almost. It had penetrated the ribcage, but it hadn't pierced the heart. Buffy noticed this, and brought her foot down, pushing it into his heart. When he turned to dust, the other vampires ran away. She ran over to where Angel had stood. She laid down on the grass by his ashes. She cried until she had no more tears left. Finally, Xander and Willow helped her up and guided her toward the library with Giles in tow. Devin stayed behind.
