Angel felt as if he had a thousand thoughts whirling and raging inside his weary head, as he kept a steady gaze on the drunken Buffy. Her eyes were unfocused, and her scent reminded him not so fondly of his very distant past. The past where I used to take advantage of girls who had far too much to drink, he remembered with a pang of shame.
This painful memory alone prompted the vampire to discover what had driven Buffy to this abnormal behaviour. He shook her shoulders, and became increasingly desperate as her head lolled unresponsively. She stared into space.
'Buffy, I know you can hear me. What the hell's wrong with you? Buffy!?'
He seemed to have broken through marginally, as salty tears made their way down Buffy's cheeks, and she turned her head away. He let go of her shoulders, and she drooped to the floor slowly; upon reaching level ground she began to sob uncontrollably, and covered her face with her shaking hands.
For a moment, Angel was unsure how to handle the situation. Then, instinctively, he sat down alongside her and took her into a firm hug, making the Vampire Slayer feel safe and steady. It took a long time until she quietened, but throughout the long, strange night, Angel refused to leave her side.
