*****Chapter Five – Master Spike*****
That night Buffy, Angel, Oz, Esme, Eve and Eli went out on a slaying spree. They enlisted Oz and Esme’s sense of smell to find the vampires that had gone from the cemetery…after many struggles they managed to slay them all, except the waitress at the Bronze. Lastly they tracked the blood bank security guard to the hospital car park.
They saw him duck behind a car; trying to hide.
‘Oh look, he wants to play.’ Buffy said in a sarcastic childlike voice, and smiling wickedly. ‘Well, let the games begin.’ The rest of them crept quietly round the car park and took positions behind cars and ambulances. Before he knew it, the security guard vampire was surrounded.
Buffy strolled casually up to the car he was hiding behind. Startled he leapt up bearing his game face. His expression changed to one of fear when Buffy sighed meaningfully and pulled out a stake. The vampire ran in the opposite direction but was startled by Angel and Eli who sprang out from behind a van with their game faces on.
Now in a panic the vampire turned to his left and ran again, this time he ran into Eves fist. He was knocked onto the floor where Oz proceeded to pour a small bottle of Holy Water over him. The vampire’s skin burned and smoked slightly, then he scrambled to his feet and fled in the opposite direction.
‘Run boy, run!’ Oz called after him, with an evil chuckle.
He thought his way was clear as no more vampires blocked his path; and seeing the opening of an alleyway behind a wall he headed for it. As he reached the wall he turned to see the others advancing on him, Buffy holding the stake at the ready. He turned back to the wall and came face to face with Esme; she smiled at him while wearing her game face. He stopped in his tracks, left with nowhere to run. In desperation he tried to push past Esme, a mistake he didn’t live to regret.
She lifted him off of the ground by his throat and threw him towards Buffy; he landed on his back at her feet. She looked down at him and smiled, and then she thrust the stake through his heart. He exploded in a cloud of black ash.
***********
‘So, we’ve cut off all the access he has so far to the blood bank, what’s next?’ Said Xander when they were back in the safety of Buffy’s house, and in the safety of daylight.
‘Well, now we’ve stopped him getting in to the blood bank, we’ve got to watch the place, in case he tries anything. Angel, you can do that.’ Said Buffy
‘That’s my idea of a job, all night at a blood bank.’ He smiled.
‘Giles, you can keep researching into rituals surrounding the Thirteenth Eve. We need to know exactly what he’ll be doing.’
‘Okay, I’ll start straight away.’
‘Good. Willow, you, Eve and Eli can help Giles, and start working on some sort of spell, or ceremony to combat Spike.’
‘Right.’ Said Willow.
‘Cordelia, Xander, you can start making some stakes, we don’t know how many we’ll need.’
‘Ah, the glamour of slaying.’ Xander joked.
‘Oz, Esme, you can come out slaying with me at night, to find some more of Spikes friends, the more we kill, the less powerful he is.’
‘Okay, any night except Thursday.’ Said Oz. Buffy laughed.
**********
‘Joseph, why is she allowed to get away with killing us off?’ Yelled Spike.
‘She is…very strong…’ Joseph stumbled.
‘She may be very strong, but we are stronger, and that’ll change if she is allowed to get away with this. Repeatedly. We have to get the upper hand here. She has to be stopped Joseph, soon.’ Joseph scurried off and tripped over on the way out. Spike held up his hands in despair.
‘I’m surrounded by bloody imbeciles!’
***********
That night Buffy, Esme and Oz went out slaying again. They were passing by the blood bank when they were surrounded by a horde of vampires. Buffy counted them mentally; there were fifteen in all.
‘Damn.’ Said Oz.
‘Double damn.’ Said Buffy. The vampires laughed.
‘Where’s your little traitor friend Angelus tonight?’ asked Joseph, the leader of the group.
‘Right here.’ Said a voice from the shadows, near the blood bank. Angel stepped out into the street. ‘I’ll fight you any day.’ He said.
‘Oh, really, you’d do that for us? No matter, we outnumber you anyway.’ Joseph smiled.
‘Yeah, we’ve got the upper hand tonight.’ Said another vamp.
‘Not for long.’ Said Buffy, launching a stake at the second vampire, killing her. Then she somersaulted over to Joseph, staking two more vampires on the way.
‘What do you say we even things up a little?’ She said. Then she shoved him to the ground, and staked the vampire behind him.
The remaining eleven vampires began an attack.
‘If it’s a fight your after…’ Said Esme, launching a stake at one of them, killing him. ‘…then it’s a fight you’ll get. God it’s great to be back in the saddle.’
As she spoke another vampire crept up behind her; she turned round just as Angel staked him.
‘Watching my back? Just like the old days.’ She said. They turned and stood back to back, and began to battle with two more vampires.
Hearing their conversation Buffy lost concentration fighting with a vampire. Fortunately Oz was nearby and saved her by staking the vampire. She returned the favour by staking a vampire that was creeping up behind him. Gotta love those vamps, how they do like to creep…
Angel and Esme won their battles with the two vampires, each staking one. They turned their attentions to Oz who was fighting a losing battle with three other vamps. Between them they each killed one. Buffy wrestled another vampire to the floor, she straddled him and staked him, and he exploded into a cloud of ash like the others. Joseph was left alone. Buffy stood up and advanced on Joseph.
‘Stake him.’ Said Angel. ‘Now.’
‘No.’ said Buffy. ‘He can go back and tell Spike that we’re getting closer and closer to defeating him.’
She lifted Joseph from the ground and threw him across the road; he landed in the low branches of a tree, tumbled to the floor and ran away.
**********
‘Now what! Do I have to do everything myself!’ Yelled Spike, angrily.
‘I’m sorry, they were too strong for us.’
‘I can tell.’
‘I promise you I’ll get them next time Spike, just give me another chance.’
‘You’ve had too many chances Joseph, and I’m sorry to say…what am I saying? Of course I’m not sorry.’ He pointed a finger at Joseph as he spoke. ‘I’m not sorry to say that you have been useless and incompetent with every task I set you…so, it looks like your time has come.’
He raised a stake in the air, and with one blow forced it through Joseph’s heart.
‘Spike…’ he muttered, then exploded into a cloud of black dust.
‘You just can’t get the staff these days, bloody idiot. Zeph? Over here.’ Spike brushed the ash from his clothes, showing no emotion.
‘Yes master?’ Zeph approached warily.
‘Master? I could get used to that.’ He smiled proudly, and then remembered his point. ‘I need you to go above ground tomorrow night, keep an eye on the slayer and her friends. Perhaps you’ll do a better job than Joseph.’
‘Yes master.’
‘Oh, and Zeph?’
‘Master?’
‘Don’t screw it up, you know the penalty.’
‘Yes master.’ He walked away, leaving Spike alone. Spike sat in his chair quietly, still thinking about being the master at the end of the world. Dru approached him from behind and placed a hand on his shoulder. He placed his hand on hers.
‘So, it seems the slayer is stronger than I first thought, and that werewolf too. They’ll make a very…nutritious feast on the Thirteenth Eve.’ He and Dru both laughed.
