Part Seven

"So this vampire, this Aurélie, took Angel somewhere...as bait," Buffy informed Jordan, finishing up her story.
"She knew you'd go after him."
Buffy sighed. "Yeah, and that's what makes me so stupid. I'm gonna look for him even though I know it's a trap."
Jordan looked at her seriously. "It doesn't make you stupid, Nicole. It makes you human."
She grinned sardonically. "Love makes you do the wacky."
Jordan smiled. "So. What next?"
Her smile drooped, and she looked at him with firm resolve. "Next, *I'm* going to follow Aurélie. My bet is she'll be at Vibes tonight...I get the impression that she really doesn't care that I know at least a little bit about her." Buffy sighed. "I don't know nearly enough, though. Not if I'm gonna find out what she's doing. Not if I'm going to find out why she's trying to get rid of me - I don't think it's just the fact that I'm the Slayer, like it usually is.
Jordan nodded. "Don't need any help?"
She flashed him a grin. "I'm a big girl."

Aurélie looked at the chained-down, sleeping vampire with pure amusement in her eyes. He was so restless, so tormented, already.
He had no idea what was coming.
His love for this Slayer was incredible. Nothing she'd ever encountered before. And not just because of the pure impossibility of it - a vampire in love with a Slayer was very much unique in itself, after all. In spite of circumstances and lives that no one would envy, the love they shared was out of a fairy tale.
Odd.
She wondered what it was like, just for a moment, before she pushed away the thought.
Aurélie had chosen her path long before, and there was no longer any time for regrets. But somewhere in her soul, she wondered. She was just like this vampire, this Angel - and what a name, for a vampire with a soul!, but at the same time she was nothing like him.
She was glad.
Because the love he shared with the Slayer was filled with pain, and a bittersweet melancholy that comes with having your fate chosen for you. Those two were damned from the moment they were born, damned to a life of Hell on earth, of fighting darkness and the creatures within it. Aurélie had damned herself, and though she told herself that was better than having your life already written, she had to wonder.
Who burned in Hell? The ones who were damned from the beginning, or the ones who chose the darker path willingly?
she thought.
And all because of his love for that girl.
Insanity.
But that love made them both stronger. To get at either one of them, the two had to be apart, had to be alone.
Alone, with the threat of the death of their lover hanging over them - regardless of whether or not the threat was legitimate.
If there were any two things in this world that Aurélie was a master of, they were separation and deception.
Aurélie smiled, a cruel, fang-baring smile, as she watched the vampire toss in his sleep, murmuring something unintelligible.
He had no idea what was coming.

Buffy crept around the side of the building.
She knew it was bordering on false hope, thinking that she'd find Aurélie here tonight, but it was the best lead she had.
In the back of her mind, she could hear Giles scolding her at her lack of a decent plan, and she smiled slightly. As horrible as the events of the last few days had been, they had served to keep her mind far away from the inhabitants of Sunnydale.
Of course, whether thinking about death and destruction was better than thinking about her friends was debatable.
Normal people would say death and destruction were much worse...
However, Buffy wasn't by any means a 'normal' person. Death and destruction she could deal with.
Missing her friends was something she didn't ever want to deal with.
she scolded herself.
So she did. Buffy glanced into every corner, every shadow where a demon could hide.
And realized that she was looking in the wrong places. She remembered what Aurélie had said to her that first night.
Buffy thought,
Oh.
Buffy walked - now doing her best to look relatively normal instead of looking like an "Austin Powers"-chick wannabe, skulking around, obviously looking for something or someone - to the front of the building.
Aurélie wasn't there.
That realization gave Buffy at least a little bit of hope. That would be too easy, would have made the trap too obvious. She strided into the club.
she thought as she spotted the female vampire from across the room. Aurélie was talking to an uncomfortable-looking guy, though Buffy couldn't tell whether he was uncomfortable because Aurélie dressed so freakishly, or just because he was the physical embodiment of dorkiness. His *clothes*...blech.
Buffy reminded herself.
Buffy watched the drama unfold from the corner of the room. She was about to doze off where she stood when something very much unexpected happened. Aurélie raised herself up on her toes, and kissed they guy hard. Once she pulled away, he stared at her in shock for a moment.
Until suddenly he became very much different. He stood up taller now, prouder. She murmured something to him, and they left the building together.
Buffy, keeping a safe distance behind the pair, followed them through the dark, dangerous streets of Los Angeles.
