She cursed under her breath as she counted her money for the third time and scanned the items on the counter, debating which she needed least desperately. "I'm only two dollars short!" she said angrily.
"Yeah, no kidding. I don't got any more money than you. 'Specially if I don't get a paycheck 'cause I keep letting you be two dollars short!" Randy snapped back.
Idly looking through the convenience store's extremely limited liquor selection, Jonathan - barely paid attention to the two. Randy and Julie argued constantly, and he had learned to tune them out. Nearly four years of virtually living in the store had made him well-seasoned in that particular art.
Occasionally, though, he did pay attention.
Jordan's gaze drifted across to the blonde who had just entered, the chimes hung across the door notifying everyone inside. Jordan saw his friend's eyes open wide as he gazed appreciatively at the girl. Randy's appreciation, he decided, was well-deserved. Even in the plain blue spaghetti-strap top and jeans she wore, she was nothing less than gorgeous.
Walking up next to her, Jordan said easily, "Can I help you with anything?"
Her short response took him by surprise. "No." She walked over to the cooler and grabbed a Coke. Bringing it up to the counter, she pointedly ignored Randy, who was staring at her yet.
"That'll be seventy cents," Randy drawled, his eyes focused anywhere but the can of soda in front of him.
She paid him and walked out the door.
Curious now, Jordan ran out after her. "You sure you know what you're doing?" He called. Having spent four of his 21 years in and around LA, he had a decent idea of what she was doing and where she was headed - but no idea why.
"I'm a big girl," came her quiet response.
He jogged up closer to her, and for the first time saw her eyes. His sharp intake of breath was inaudible, but he prayed she had not heard it nonetheless. Her wide brown eyes were a sea of emotions - confusion, anger, fear, and an almost palpable amount of pain and sadness. He shivered, but moved past his shock and extended a hand. "My name's Jordan."
She looked at him suspiciously. "That your real name?"
"No," he replied evenly, "but it'll do."
After a moment's hesitation, she reached out and grabbed his hand. "Nicole."
"That your real name?"
Nicole's cool gaze rested on his. He took a few steps, hoping she would follow.
She did.
