"Okay, Spike. Spill." Buffy stood before the blond vampire, stake held at the ready, right over his heart. Spike looked down at the petite Slayer, brown eyes coldly scornful.
"Now why would I do a damned fool thing like that?"
"So you can go on doing damned fool things," Buffy suggested, and poked him lightly with the business end of the stake. He grunted.
"You have," he swallowed. "A point."
Buffy almost rolled her eyes but caught herself at the last moment. With Spike, even such a minute gesture could be a potentially fatal mistake.
"Funny. Look. I've got a ton of homework waiting. Why don’t you just tell me what I want to know so I can go home and get to it?"
"Because if I tell you," Spike ground out deliberately, clearly losing patience for this little game. "I might as well take up sunbathing. So," Spike snarled, catching Buffy off guard. He knocked the stake out of her hand. "Forget it!"
Buffy responded with a 1-2 combination to his face and midsection, and followed it up with a high kick to his chin. She fell back into a crouch, waiting for him to make his move. Spike massaged his chin briefly and favored her with a leering grin.
"Oh, I love it when you play rough," he taunted and followed up with a series of punches of his own, knocking her to the ground. Buffy answered with a horizontal kick that swept his legs out from under him. She allowed herself a brief second of satisfaction as he connected firmly with the hard ground. Buffy swiftly readied herself for Spike's counter-attack. Which never came. He merely lay on the ground, staring up at the star-filled sky. Buffy relaxed slightly.
"So, why not tell me why you're dead. . . um, dead-er if you tell me what I want to know."
"My boss."
"Huh?"
"Look," Spike sat up and faced her, something akin to pain in his eyes. "Dru was my raison d'etre, you know? Now she’s gone. I don’t fancy drifting aimlessly through the centuries. I crave a purpose, a direction. A goal to work toward. Otherwise, it’s all killing, maiming, and blood and brutality. One can only stand so much fun after a while."
"I'm on board with that," Buffy said sarcastically.
"Hmmm. Yes. I rather thought you would be. But, if I tell you what you want to know, the whole thing bloody well goes up in smoke. Sorry. I like this gig. Too much." He favored her with a careless shrug and a grin to match.
"Okay, fine. Let me try this from another angle. Did you follow Eliza Wells home last night?" Buffy couldn't believe she was actually playing twenty-questions with a vampire. Especially this vampire.
Spike pursed his lips and stared up at the stars, stalling deliberately to bait the Slayer. "Hmm. Well, yes, I did." No harm in telling her that much, he thought.
"And?" Buffy prompted impatiently.
"And. . . what?"
"Why?" she ground out.
"Because my boss wanted her followed."
Buffy exhaled in frustration and tried for a firmer grip on her temper.
"Look," Spike said finally. "She's real close to muckin' up the works. If you want to keep her breathing, I suggest you get her to back off."
"She's only a high school teacher. Yeah, her class is about horror, but what. . . ."
Spike cut her off abruptly with a laugh. His lips curled in a sneer.
"Yeah, right. And I'm just an ordinary bloke out for a midnight lark. Open your eyes, Slayer. There's a hell of a lot more to her than that bloody little class of hers. That's why the Man wants her dead." With that, Spike fled as if the devil himself were chasing him. Perhaps that wasn't far wrong, Buffy thought. She sat down abruptly as she realized the full import of what he said.
Not again, she thought as she fell back onto the ground. Not again.
