Time passes, as time must. Snyder puts his plan into motion. After about a month. . . .
Eliza ducked into the library and stepped quickly around the counter to the door of Giles’ office. The Slayer and her friends looked up from their discussion and briefly at Eliza. Buffy glanced over at the library doors and saw Principal Snyder peeking in through the round library windows. She smiled widely at him and waved. He sneered his frustration and stalked off down the hall.
Rupert looked up to see a mildly agitated Eliza standing in his doorway. "Hello," he said. "Not your usual time to be here, is it?"
"Oh. Hi, Rupert."
Oh, hi Rupert? he thought and then voiced his query. "You look a bit upset. Something wrong?"
"Oh, just. . . " Eliza sighed. "Trying to avoid Principal Satyr is becoming exceedingly tiresome. Every time I turn around, there he is, and I know exactly what he wants. And it doesn’t bear thinking about." Eliza leaned a shoulder against the door jamb and looked out the door with a half-disgusted, half-frustrated expression.
Giles smiled down at his books. Principal Snyder was indeed tenacious when he set his sights on getting what he wanted. And for the past few weeks, what he had wanted was Eliza. Poor girl, he thought. Gone from vampire attacks--only the one, thank God, but no answers yet as to why--to an unwanted admirer. At least Snyder's attention was the lesser of the two evils. Giles began to commiserate with her, and then stopped suddenly. Eliza peered intently at him, and then crossed her arms.
"Rupert, you're getting that look again."
"What look?" Giles was genuinely confused.
"The look that says you're contemplating something that someone is not gonna like."
"Ah. Well, uh," Giles cleared his throat. "Y-you know, Eliza," he began conversationally. "The one way to get him off your back might just be to-to-to, uh, go out on a date with him, like he wants."
"What?!" came a chorus of five voices, quickly dissolving into a counterpoint of commentary.
"Giles, how could you?"
"That’s so cruel!"
"Oh, eeew!"
"Man, you do not like her, do you?"
Eliza held her hand up for silence and got it.
"Why would you suggest something like that, Giles? The man’s a troll!" She paused a moment. "Unless you have an ulterior motive. Okay. Out with it. What’s the scam?"
"Well, he is, uh, attracted to you, and you’ll obviously have no peace until you give him what he wants. . .within reason, of course."
"Yeah, worked real well with Hitler, too, as I recall," Eliza shot back and then bit her tongue at her overly harsh comment. It wasn't Giles' fault, after all, and he was trying to be helpful, she reminded herself. Giles bent an annoyed, disappointed look on her. "I'm sorry. Your other reason?" she asked contritely.
"Principal Snyder obviously knows about the Hellmouth. Perhaps if you, um, cozied up to him a bit, he might talk"
Eliza considered in silence for a few moments.
"Fine. I'll do it," she grumbled. "Once! And I know I'm definitely not going to like it." She turned and looked hard at Giles. "You know, sometimes I really hate it when you have a good plan." She turned and walked out of the library, leaving muffled chuckles and a confused librarian behind her.
"I-I-I don’t understand. It is a perfectly good plan." Confusion and hurt clouded his green eyes.
Buffy smiled and laid a hand on her Watcher's shoulder. "Giles, picture yourself as a woman. Would *you* want to go out with Principal Snyder?"
Giles considered a moment and then swallowed. "Quite. I take your point. He looked sharply toward the doors. "Do you think she’ll forgive me?" he asked, looking back down at Buffy.
"Well, that depends. If you're right, and he spills what he knows, then I'd say yes. If not. . . ." Buffy let the sentence dangle and shrugged, mischief dancing in her green eyes.
"I-if not?" Giles prompted anxiously.
Xander spoke up. "Then you are gonna owe her big-time!"
