Angel packed his duffle bag full of leather jackets and T-shirts, all that remained since Wolfram & Hart collapsed and all his belongings were lost. Oh well. He would just have to go shopping. He had been staying at the hotel for the past week, along with Fred and Wesley. But now he was leaving. He had no more business in Los Angeles now that Wolfram & Hart was destroyed. What was the point in staying here now?
Wesley appeared in the doorway. “You’re leaving?” he asked. “Why are you leaving? Where are you going? Angel…. What’s going on?”
“I’m going to Italy,” Angel told him, putting the last folded T-shirt into his bag. “I don’t need to be in LA anymore. With Wolfram & Hart gone, I can leave here. I have some business in Italy. SHE’s there. I can’t…. I won’t let her go.”
“What about Nina?” Wesley asked.
“Got a letter from her yesterday,” said Angel, zipping up the duffle bag. “Met another werewolf in the Caribbean. They bought a cage together. They’re a perfect match. So, basically, she dumped me.”
“What about the hotel?” Wesley asked. “I thought you wanted to start it up again. Rent out some of the rooms. How can you do that if you’re in Rome?”
“You and Fred can manage it,” said Angel. “I trust you two. You’re both smart. You’ll be fine. You can rent the rooms out and make some money. Carry out a normal life, now.”
“No we can’t,” said Fred, coming up beside Wesley in the doorway and resting her head on his shoulder. She smiled with happiness. “Have you told him where we’re going, yet?” she asked Wesley.
“I was just about to,” said Wesley.
“Where?” Angel asked.
Wesley pulled a pair of tickets out of his pocket and held them up. “Plain tickets to Rome,” he said. “Bought them three days ago. I didn’t realize you were leaving the hotel. If you want me to cancel…”
Fred looked at Wesley in a way that clearly meant, “What!!!! NO!!! Are you nuts!!!” But Wesley looked at her and she sighed. She turned to Angel. “Right,” she said, reluctantly. “We’ll cancel if you need us to. It’s no big deal.”
Angel shook his head. “No,” he said. “I can’t do that to you. You two deserve some happiness after all that happened to you. Just… I’ll just ask Spike to do it. He can take care of things here.”
“’Fraid not, mate,” said Spike, appearing behind Fred and Wesley in the hall. “I’m leaving tomorrow. Heading to Rome. All packed and everything.”
There was a long, awkward silence before Fred clapped her hands together. “Great,” she said. “Like a big family vacation…. Except for the fact that you aren’t family… and that you are both going after Buff—“ She stopped. “Well, uh, I’m gonna go pack.”
“Right,” said Wesley. “Me too.” The two of them walked across the hall to their room, leaving Spike and Angel in an awkward stare down.
Finally, Spike said, “Why are you going after her? She’s with the Immortal. You don’t stand a chance, mate.”
“Neither do you,” said Angel.
“Who said I was going after Buffy?” Spike asked. “Have you ever considered that I’m just trying to broaden my horizons. Rome is a great place to learn. Love the art.”
“Fine,” said Angel, not believing a word he said. “We’ll just call Gunn. He can manage here. I leave tomorrow.”
“So do I,’ Spike said.
“So do we!” Fred called from across the hall.
Angel and Spike looked across the hall into Fred and Wesley’s room. Fred stood by the door, zipping a suitcase. “What?” she said. “You two are loud, it’s not like I was ease dropping. And it’s kind of funny when you two fight about Buffy.”
“Whatever,” said Angel. “We all leave tomorrow. Great. It will all be great. One big happy trip.” Then he muttered to himself. “God kill me now.”
