Summary: Buffy was not getting a good night's rest. Again. Just like the five nights before, nightmares had haunted her from the moment she closed her eyes until the moment she found herself waking up--sitting up straight and screaming her lungs out. This was the third time this night a nightmare ended this way. The young girl lay tossing and turning and murmuring in her sleep. Without even understanding, Joyce could hear the fear and terror in her daughter's voice. It scared her. This was the second night she had not moved from Buffy's side, ready to comfort her and calm her down the moment she woke up. For Joyce, the question was no longer *if* Buffy would have another nightmare, but *when*.
Joyce couldn't suppress a yawn. Like her daughter, she, too, had had little sleep in the past nights. She was worried. Until they had moved to Sunnydale, Buffy had never had nightmares. At least not in the way she had them here, screaming as if she was being killed. And now it was the second time in a few months her daughter was being plagued by these nightmares. The first time, Joyce hadn't thought much of it. But they were more intense now, more disturbing. And it terrified her. She couldn't help but think there was something terribly wrong with her little girl.
At that moment, Buffy snapped up straight and started screaming again. Her eyes were wide open, and Joyce could see the fear... see that her daughter was scared to death of something. She felt the pain in her heart as she quickly sat down beside Buffy and took the girl in her arms.
It took several minutes, but finally Buffy calmed down and stopped sobbing, and Joyce laid her back down. She put one hand on the girl's forehead as she gently wiped the tears from her eyes.
"It's alright, honey. They're just dreams. They'll pass. They'll pass." But for a moment, even Joyce herself doubted those words. Buffy nodded her head a bit, and crawled up as her mother got up and put the blankets back over her. She walked to the door, and when she reached it she looked around once more. Buffy had already fallen asleep again. The lack of sleep over the last couple of days had worn her out. It was almost as if there was nothing left of the cheerful teenager she once was.
Realizing her daughter might sleep for maybe an hour, or maybe even an hour and a half before the next nightmare would come, Joyce closed the door behind her. She walked to her bedroom and sat down on the bed, almost immediately falling asleep herself. A sleep that would last until morning.

"Rosenberg." Willow was awakened by the ringing of her telephone, but quickly answered it. She sat up straight and brushed the hairs from her eyes when she recognized Buffy's mother on the other end. "Oh... hi, Mrs. Summers. Yeah, it's Willow."
Willow listened closely as Joyce told her about the previous nights. She'd been away all week, and hadn't talked to her friend at all. She'd been too busy learning about some new computer programs. She remembered how Xander had said she was crazy spending Spring Break behind a computer instead of a sunny Florida beach. She had laughed. This was her idea of a good time.
After Joyce had finished, Willow took a second to think. "I think you'd better call Mr. Giles. Hang on, I'll give you his number." Willow went through her address book and read Giles' number. Joyce thanked her and hung up. Willow, starting to worry about Buffy, got out of bed and quickly got dressed, not even taking the time for a shower. The plans she had made for her first day back home were instantaneously canceled as she grabbed her keys and headed for the door.

After getting off the phone with Willow, Joyce stared at the piece of paper in her hand for a while. "What's that librarian got to do with this?" she whispered to herself. Her mind tried to come up with an answer. It failed, so she decided to just call the number. Her surprise grew even bigger when she heard the concern in the man's voice. When he'd broken the connection, she was baffled. The man had said he was coming over at once. As far as Joyce knew, he wasn't a doctor. At least not a medical one. Why was the school librarian taking such an interest in her daughter's welfare?
Screaming from Buffy prevented her from thinking any further. Joyce dropped the receiver as she ran to Buffy's room. Was this ever going to end?

It was at that moment that Willow arrived outside the Summers house. Buffy's screaming could be heard outside as if there were no walls between them. The strident noise made a shiver run down her spine, and for a moment she was afraid to move. But the screams faded and only the faint sound of someone crying remained. A sad feeling came over the young redhead. Her friend was in pain. And that meant, so was she.
She hurried to the front door and reached for the key, hidden in a flowerpot. She opened the door and stepped inside, closing it without making a sound. Buffy's sobbing was louder now, and Willow quickly walked to her friend's room.
There, she saw Buffy lying in her mother's arms, her arms wrapped around her mother's neck. Buffy Summers, the mighty Vampire Slayer didn't look so mighty now. She looked more like some frail creature--a small, frail and scared creature--paralyzed with fear. Joyce looked up at Willow and they exchanged a look. Helplessness was written in her eyes. What Willow saw was not the proud Joyce Summers she had come to know, but a scared woman who had almost given up all hope.
Willow walked over to the bed and sat down. Carefully they both released Joyce from Buffy's embrace and laid her down in Willow's lap. Joyce stumbled out of the room and went downstairs to wait for that weird librarian. But there was only one thing on her mind: sleep. Even Buffy's condition slipped her mind as she saw the couch in the living room. But she forced herself to stay awake and stand by the door. At least until she had let the man in. Then she would lie down, and sleep... sleep...
A knock on the door woke her up from her doze and she opened the door. There was a man standing in front of her, but she didn't recognize him. She couldn't recognize him. Her vision was blurred with fatigue, and her brain just simply refused to clear up the picture.
"Mr. Giles? They're upstairs. Come in." She heard a noise, but couldn't grasp it. Sleep. The man walked by her. She closed the door and dragged herself to the couch. As soon as she lay down, she drifted away into a restless sleep, even before she had had the time to grab a pillow.
