Part One

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was late at night and Buffy was on patrol wandering the streets of Sunnydale. She was walking down an alleyway, when she realized this was the alley where she had first met Angel. The memories of him came rushing to her. She stared at the spot where he had stood and remembered everything about him. Then, someone came out of the shadows and stood on the spot at which Buffy was looking. There stood Angelus, grinning.

"Well hello Buffy." he said mockingly. Buffy just stared at him, hatred in her eyes.

"What's the matter?" he asked dauntingly, walking closer to her. Buffy held her position and raised her stake. Angel put his hands up in the air.

"Whooo, no need to get violent. Besides, you would never use that on me. Me, who gave you your first..."

"Shutup!!" yelled Buffy interrupting him. She narrowed her eyes. "Don't push me Angelus. I'm not afraid of you."

"Yeah, I'm sure. Well maybe you should be afraid of this." Approximately 20 vampires stepped out of the shadows and stood behind Angelus.

With no hesitation Buffy threw her stake and dusted the vampire standing next to Angelus before he could react.

"Very predictable." said Angelus. "I know your every move."

"And I know all yours." Buffy replied, letting another stake fly, dusting the vampire on the other side of Angelus.

Then all the vamps began advancing on her. Buffy fought viciously. A kick here and a stab there and soon only three were left, Angelus included. One of the vampires attacked her side, and she punched him out of the way. The second vampire knocked her down from behind, and Buffy hit her head in the pavement. She rolled over and was about to get up and Angelus grabbed this chance and jumped on her, pinning her down. He looked at her bleeding wound.

"Should I kiss it all better?" Angelus asked suggestively, then bared his fangs. With all her strength Buffy kicked him in the face and he stumbled backwards. Buffy jumped up and resumed her fighting stance. One of the other vampires jumped at her and she staked him. The other vampire had regained his composure and Buffy beat him to the ground before she stabbed him. Standing up, Buffy sensed a vamp behind her. Without any hesitation she swung around and jammed her stake in his heart for all she was worth. Only then did Buffy look up and realize she had just staked Angelus.

"I though you loved me." he said pleadingly and sounding sincere. Then he turned to dust. Buffy was immobilized with shock as she watched each individual piece of dust from her former lover float to the ground. She stood frozen, tears in her eyes, staring at the spot where Angelus had stood. Buffy stayed there, not moving, for a long time, then slowly backed away, turned around and ran out of the alley as fast as she could. As Buffy ran away a dark figure peeked around the corner. Holding a broom, it crept to where Angelus' ashes lay.

The next day in school Buffy met Giles and everyone in the library.

"So, any news from the apocalypse?" asked Xander as they walked in. Giles looked up and noticed the wound on Buffy's forehead.

"Rough evening last night, I see. Are you all right?"

"I'm fine. It was nothing. Just your average slaying." Buffy responded.

"Glad to hear it." said Giles. Clearing his throat, Giles went over to one of his many books. "We seem to have another prophecy."

"Every week a new prophecy. I'm already tired from the last one." Willow said.

"Prophecy girl. That's me." said Buffy.

"Yes, well, this one says, rather cryptic of course, but that the slayer should expect a very strong and sinister rival to unexpectedly show up at her weakest moment."

"Easily solved. I won't be weak." said Buffy shrugging.

"It's not quite that easy Buffy. You mustn't let your guard down at any moment." Giles said.

"Which rival is it this time?" sighed Xander.

"Let's see, which rival will it be? We have a great selection of evil rivals, just take your pick!" said Buffy sarcastically.

"Yeah, a great selection." said Willow. Then, in an announcer's voice, "Who will it be? Spike and Druscilla? Preying-Mantis-lady? Werewolves? Angel?"

"I think a good guess would be Angelus." said Giles. Buffy grimaced.

"It won't be Angel," she said calmly. "I killed him." Everyone in the room's mouths dropped open.

"You killed him? Last night? Oh my, how are you?" Giles rambled.

"Oh, Buffy. Are you okay?" Willow asked concerned.

"I'm fine." Buffy seemed very unemotional.

"Good for you. You finally did the right thing," said Xander.

"Yeah. Now about this prophecy..." said Buffy, trying to change the subject.

"Well now I don't know. I suppose we'll just have to wait and find out." said Giles. Buffy stood up and went over to the punching bag and started hitting it with all her might.

"Poor Buffy," Willow whispered to Xander.

"Yeah, but it will work out for the best." he replied.

Later that day Ms. Calendar was walking down the hall. She stopped in front of the library, hesitated, then pushed the door open and walked in. Giles was reading a book in the stacks.

"Rupert," she called. Giles peeked his head out from a shelf.

"Ms. Calendar." Giles responded coldly.

"Listen Rupert, I'd like to say that I'm sorry..."

"Jenny, please. I don't want to hear you apologize." Giles said harshly. Then softly, "I think you'd better leave."

"I know you're mad about this. But I tried to keep them together, I tried, but I didn't know the curse..."

"Stop. You know why I'm angry?" Giles was almost exploding. "You ruined the life of my slayer. You had the chance, you could have told us, you could have told me who you are. You could have stopped this from happening. Now Angel is dead and Buffy's soul has died with him. You've come here to say you're sorry, but you cannot even understand how deeply you've hurt us all. I...I...loved you Jenny." Giles stopped and looked down, his chest heaving.

"Rupert, I'm here because I care so much." She came closer to him and touched his arm. "There was nothing I could have done. Believe me, I would have done something if I could have." Giles looked away with an exasperated expression. "But there is something I can do now." Out of her knapsack she pulled a ceramic box. Giles looked at it. "In this box are Angel's ashes. And I've found the secret to make him live again." Giles looked up at her sharply, hope in his eyes.
