Part Two
The next day went like any other. Buffy and her friends woke up and went to school. Faith slept till noon, and spent the rest of the rest of the day watching t.v. and working on her fighting technique. The vampires slept, as vampires do during the day. Once the sun set, though, things would take an unexpected turn for everyone.
Buffy, Willow, and Xander. When Buffy first arrived in Sunnydale with her mother they just wanted to make a fresh start. Buffy thought that she would be able to live a normal life again and forget about being a slayer. Fate, however, was not so kind. Buffy soon discovered that she had moved to the home of the Hellmouth. A gateway to Hell closed for the time being. Eventually Buffy accepted her fate, and befriended Xander and Willow, two childhood friend who found out Buffy's secret. So whenever an evil force, these three friends, along with Giles, Oz and Cordelia, will fight to stop it.
Tonight they walked the school hallways casually talking amongst themselves. "Thanks for helping us with our math homework, Will," Buffy said.
She was sandwiched between her two bestfriends, Xander carrying his bookbag on her right, and Willow holding her books to her left.
"It's no problem Buffy. I like to help you guys."
"Why are we working at the library anyway," Xander asked
"We can't work at my house," Buffy said. "My mom is throwing a little shindig for her co-workers at the art gallery."
"My parents are out of town. They don't like me having visitors over when they aren't home."
"What about you Xander? Why are we never invited to your house."
"And subject you girls to torture known as my parents. It's bad enough Willow met them, but you don't have to also, Buff."
The friends continue their usual banter until they reached the doors of the library. Behind the doors sounds of a struggle could be heard.
"You guys stay back," Buffy ordered. She slowly crept up to the doors. Looking through the round glass window, Buffy could see a vampire five feet from the door. He was obviously on lookout but he was looking the wrong way. About seven feet farther down a vampire stood hunched over someone lying on the table. It's fists were holding the person down while it continued screaming for information.
"Where's the book!" He was apparently not getting the answers needed.
Buffy backed up and turned to Xander and Willow. "What weapons do you guys have?" Buffy whispered.
"I have a stake and a cross in my bag," Xander whispered back.
"Give me the stake." Xander hurriedly opened his bag and pulled out the stake and cross. He passed the stake to Buffy, while gently placing the bag on the floor. "We got two vamps. One just beyond the doors with another one at the table. The one at the table is holding someone that looks like Giles. I'll take out the first vamp. Xander, you hold back the second one with the cross. Willow, you stay here." Willow was about to protest when Buffy continued. "If it looks like we're in trouble, make a run to the weapons closet, and pull out some crosses and holy water." Buffy looked at Xander and Willow and saw that they understood. "Let's get to work."
Buffy bust through the door with lightning speed. Catching the vampire off guard, she grabbed it by the shoulder and threw it against the wall. After giving the vampire two fast punches with her left hand, he tried to punch her back. Moving her head back, she easily avoided the punch. After striking him again, she placed her left forearm against his neck. The vampire pinned against the wall, Buffy shoved the stake into its heart.
Buffy turned around as the vampire burst into ashes. Before her Xander stood with the cross extended before him. The vampire stepped away from Giles, and looked directly at Buffy.
"Slayer." The vampire began to smile. "Let's go."
"You want to fight?"
"Yeah."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah!" the vampire howled.
The vampire charged towards Buffy with his arms extended, Buffy kicked him just before he reached her. The force of the blow caused the vampire to land on his back. Buffy then leaped onto the vampire and plunged the stake into his heart. Buffy stood up and walked over to where Giles lay.
"Giles are you alright?"
"Nothing that an icepack won't cure."
"Buffy!"
Buffy looked behind her and saw a vampire in a long black trenchcoat holding Willow. Xander stood there with a look of complete agony on his face.
"Give me the book or the girl dies."
"What book?" Giles asked.
"The book of Buchhotz."
"As I told your companions, I don't know what you're talking about."
Frustrated, the vampire said, "It was sent from Munich. You should have received it a couple of days ago."
"I know what book you're talking about. It's in the office, though."
"Well go get it!" The vampire stood steady with his hand wrapped around Willow's throat.
Giles wearily got his feet and slowly walked to his left into the office. When he returned a few seconds later, he carried a thin red book in his hand.
"Throw it here," the vampire commanded.
Giles casually tossed the book at the vampire and it landed before his feet. The vampire then riffled Willow across the room, sending her crashing into Buffy. He grabbed the book and ran out the door. Xander was about to sprint after him when Giles yelled out, "Xander!"
"Shit!" Xander cursed, and ran to where Willow and Buffy lay. Xander was gently lifted Willow off Buffy, allowing her to stand up. "You okay, Will?"
"My head hurts," she said meekly.
"That's okay. Let me help you up." Xander slowly helped Willow get onto her feet.
"Giles, what was in that book?" Buffy asked.
"Nothing. Vampire fairy tales."
"Well obviously something was in it."
"Here's your book."
"Thanks, Sean," Davison said, grabbing the book. From his thrown he threw it to where Maurice was sitting. "So why aren't Mr. Trick's boys delivering this book to me?"
"They're dead. The slayer killed them. It's a good thing you had me tail them or we might have never got the book."
"So the slayer spotted you?"
"It was necessary to get the book."
"Yeah, alright. Damn, I wanted to go undetected for longer than this. Well, you guys stay here. I have to go make sure the next phase goes off without a hitch."
"Here Giles, I found an icepack and some Advil in the teacher's lounge."
"Thanks, Xander." Giles placed two tablets in his mouth and put the icepack on his head.
"You felling better, Will?"
"Yeah. My head hurt a little after landing on Buffy, but I feel better now."
Xander stood before Buffy, Willow, and Giles who were sitting around the table. "So, what did you find out from your friend in Munich?"
"He's dead. He was found yesterday in an abandoned warehouse. There were signs of torture and," Giles paused for a second, "his heart was missing."
The group sat silently for a few seconds. " Okay, so what do we know here?" Buffy said breaking the silence. "We've got a vampire looking for a book. Is that it?"
"We know this vampire is not local. He had an accent," Giles said.
"And the first two were local. I recognized one of them from Spike's old crew."
"So why were the two dust brothers looking for the book?" Xander asked. "It's obvious that the third wasn't with them. He was way too professional, and he didn't show up until the other two were dusted."
"Maybe he was following us." Willow said.
"Or them. Maybe we have two rival factions of vampires after this book. What do you think, Giles?" Buffy asked.
"I'm hesitant to guess. There are just too many unknowns at this time. For the time being I think we should concentrate on finding out what's in that book."
"Time to go into research mode, you want me to call Cordy and Oz to help?"
"Not just yet, Xander. We don't even know if this is serious. If we find something that relate directly to an evil, we'll call then."
"What did they call the book again?" Willow asked.
"The book of Buchhotz, I believe. My friend sent it to me because he couldn't understand the final texts."
"Something bothering you, Giles. Spill."
"I'm sure it's nothing, Buffy."
"Come on Giles. You spend so many hours a day with a person you can tell when something's bothering him. So spill now and save me hours of constant nagging."
"I get the feeling that I've seen that vampire before. Maybe I saw his picture in a book. Anyways, whenever I think of his face a sense of dread fills me."
"She's coming."
"Shh. She's going to hear us."
"Mr. Trick said that he wants her dead?"
"That's right."
"Stop trying to be so sneaky, boys," Faith yelled. "Just come out of those bushes so we can fight."
"What do we do?"
"Go fight I guess."
The three vampires walked out from behind the bush feeling like they were about to attend a funeral. The only question is whether it would be theirs or the slayers.
"Mr. Trick says we have to kill you in order to prove ourselves," the lead vampire said in a cool tone.
"Your willing to die for a ritual. You guys must be becoming more stupid every day."
The three vampires looked at each other, confused what to do next. The lead vampire finally summoned up enough courage and screamed, "Charge!" He ran towards her at full force. Faith using the vampires momentum, grabbed him, and flipped him over her with such a force that he landed ten feet away.
The other two proceeded to attack. The second was met with a kick to the head and he collapsed to the ground. The next vampire tried to punch Faith with his right arm, which she swiftly grabbed and snapped. The vampire screamed in agony. Faith then spun the vampire towards her and plunged a stake into his heart.
"One down, two to go." Faith's victory was short lived, however. She suddenly felt a huge pain in the back of her head and fell to the ground. With her face to the ground, she felt someone on top of her, pinning her down.
"Time to die, slayer," the vampire whispered.
This is it, she thought. Faith began to wonder what was taking the vampire so long when she felt the weight on her suddenly decrease. She turned over, and saw that she was covered in ashes.
"What?" she said when something caught her eye. The last vampire was fighting with someone with just ten feet away. She grabbed her rescue stake from inside her jacket. Aiming at the vampire's heart, he threw the stake into its back. It stood there for a second silently, and then burst into ashes. The stake fell to the ground with nothing to support it in the air.
"Nathan?"
"Hi, Faith," Nathan said casually. "So you're the slayer?"
"So you're a kind of supernatural sightseer."
"Yeah. Me and my friends travel the world looking for the paranormal. I wasn't lying to you yesterday when I said I'm traveling to see the world. I'm just looking for a part that nobody else is looking for."
"Well what made you come to Sunnydale? You just wanted to see the vampires."
"There's that. Plus my friend Maurice is into witchcraft so he gets a kick out of the energies here. This being the Hellmouth and all."
Faith sat on the bench beside Nathan in an uncomfortable silence. She felt strange around Nathan for some reason. Maybe it's the fact he knows about me being the slayer, she thought. I might as well find out everything he knows.
"Hey, Nate, when you ran into me yesterday did you know then that I'm a slayer?"
"Actually, no. I just thought you were a hot girl with a lot of attitude," Nathan said lightly. Faith glanced at him with a half smile which he returned.
Returning to a serious tone, Faith looked forward and asked him another question. "What were you doing in the park at night then?"
"Looking for the wildlife. I had my cross so I figured I would be alright." Nathan lifted up his cross for Faith to see. "I was walking by when I saw that vampire on top of you. I saw the stake on the ground, so I just ran up beside you. Grabbed the stake, and stabbed the vampire on the back. I tried to take out the other one while he was getting up, but I guess he was too fast for me."
"This has certainly been an interesting evening," Faith said. She stood up and Nathan followed suit. "I've got to go patrol."
"I can come with you. I mean I have killed a vampire," Nathan said in an mockingly masculine voice.
"No thanks. I can't handle killing vampires and protecting you at the same time."
"Okay, so a work related activity is out then. Why don't I take you out tomorrow then? I know you like to dance."
"Yeah, why not," Faith said apathetically. "You can pick me up at my place. Give me your hand." Nathan extended his right hand, taking of the glove covering it. Faith pulled out a jacket from her jacket pocket, and proceeded to write her address on Nathan's hand. "Eight o'clock good?"
"Fine with me."
"See you then." Faith put the pen back into her pocket and walked of into the park. She felt pretty good about the encounter, but something was bothering her. "Why was he wearing gloves?"
As soon as Nathan knew Faith was gone, he held the cross between his hands and ground it into dust.
"Goddam crosses."
He slowly let the dust fall through his fingers onto the ground. No longer needing them, Nathan pulled of his gloves and threw them into the bushes. He looked at the palm of his right hand proudly.
"Tomorrow."
Whistling, he walked slowly into the darkness.
