Part Twelve

The next night found Angel and Xander teamed together on a cliff over looking a beach. Down on the beach a group of black robed people stood around tending a bon fire. Nearby was what looked to be a cauldron that Daemon had said would be Dramoco. Xander was peering down at the scene through binoculars, but Angel didn't need them. He could see the group easily.
Angel thought about the other teams. Willow and Nathaniel were both on the far side of the beach down by the coves. They were set up with the spells that Daemon had helped them find so that they could shut down Dramoco. Angel still wasn't sure he trusted the spells, and though he wasn't quite as familiar with spells as a Watcher seemed to need to be, he did know enough that he didn't trust the spell.
Whistler was by himself. Originally they were going to have three teams of two, but it made more sense that Lissa would be with Daemon. Actually, it wasn't entirely clear what Whistler was doing. He was down by some rocks watching the activities just like Angel and Xander. It had been discussed that Whistler, being a demon, would be able to do something against Dramoco, but Angel still wasn't sure what.
"There they are," Xander said, shaking Angel out of his thoughts. "Daemon and Lissa are down there. Daemon's getting ready."
"Then I hope Nathaniel and Willow are ready."
"Don't worry about Will, she knows what she's doing. Not so sure about the rest of us though."
"What?"
"We're working with the potential bad guys, there's got to be a rule against that in the Slayer Handbook."
"We aren't Slayers."
"No, and let me be the first to say that I wish we had some Slayer back up on this one."
"You mean Buffy back up."
"Well she is the only Slayer on the block since your dark honey killed Kendra."
Angel turned away from the scene on the beach and stared at Xander.
"Yeah, you heard me."
"And since it was on my orders, you blame me for her death."
"Of course. And while we're at it, I'm blaming you for Ms. Calendar's death too. In case you couldn't tell, I still don't trust you."
"Yet you're working with me."
"No choice. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do."
"And what would you really know about that? You ever done something so terrible that it haunts you every day when you close your eyes to sleep? Have you ever hurt the one you love so badly you can't stand to see the pain in her eyes? I am not proud of what I did, but I'm trying to do something about it."
"Which is why you ran out on her? Oh, right I forgot, that's what you do to the one you love. You run away from your problems instead of working them out. Silly me."
The look in Angel's eyes right then was enough to make Xander actually wonder if he had stepped over the line there. It was hard at that moment to remember that this was the soulful Angel, because the look in his eyes reminded Xander of Angelus.
A flash of light interrupted them. Angel turned and stared down at the beach as Xander breathed a sigh of relief. The light was bright enough that Whistler was clearly visible in the shadows of the rock. Daemon was wearing a black robe like the others. His hands were raised and Angel could hear him chanting something in a strange language.
Daemon chanted though neither Angel nor Xander could tell what he was saying.
"Really wish we had subtitles," Xander said.
"Come on."
