Part Eight
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nathaniel sat in his chair, his head in his hands. He knew he was lucky that they hadn't guessed how he had known it was Dramoco so easily.
"Dramoco, why did it have to be him?" Nathaniel muttered.
His doorbell rang. Cursing under his breath, Nathaniel made his way to the door, stealthily avoiding the pizza boxes and dirty clothes. He grimaced slightly. Finally, Nathaniel made it to the door and he opened it.
He stood there for a moment unable to speak. Then Nathaniel was able to regain his composure.
"Lissa," he said softly.
"Hello Nathaniel. Can I come in?"
He hesitated.
"Nathaniel, I know it's been a while. Come on, you know I'm not going to do anything to you. God."
"Come in Lissa."
"Thank you."
Nathaniel turned and made his way back through the room with Lissa behind him. He guessed he shouldn't be too surprised to see her, what with everything that was going on. Still, having her here was bring up memories he would rather forget.
"What a mess," Lissa said. "What would Mother say if she saw this?"
"I suppose she'd say that this place isn't fit to live in. But I don't give a damn what Mother thinks."
He turned around quickly and was facing Lissa again.
"Why are you here?" He asked.
"To warn you. Dramoco's followers are in LA"
"I know. I've been requested to assist some friends of the Slayers. They've already confirmed my fears. But that's not all, Dramoco's been feasting on his own. The woman they found bore the tatoo."
"He's getting desperate. It's coming close."
Nathaniel felt a shiver of cold fear slide down his spine and settle in his stomach. While he had a feeling that this full moon would be the One, he had been hoping he was wrong.
"If that's true Lissa, you need to be gone."
"I can't. And you know exactly why."
"Lissa you must. I couldn't stand losing you again. They were stupid this first time, but you can't think that they will be again."
"I'm alive aren't I?"
"Are you?"
Lissa looked at him with hurt in her eyes. It was the truth. She wasn't quite alive, not really. And here he was, a Watcher, feeling bad for a vampire in pain. It was too much, just too much.
"Lissa, please. You're still here, that's good, but since you're still here, Dramoco will want you dead. They won't make the same mistake twice."
"I won't leave you. Tell me more about this Slayer's friends. Maybe I can help them too. Maybe they can help me."
"Mr. Giles, the Slayer's Watcher called me. He told me that two men were going to come over for help. I guess that they were her friends, but then the Council insists that Slayers don't have friends."
"This slayer is different Nathaniel, make no mistake about that. The Council seems to underestimate her. What else?"
"Well the older of the two was dressed rather colorfully. His name was Whistler. I've never heard a name like that before. The other and more quieter of the two called himself Angel."
"Angel? You said…Well that would make sense."
"You know him?"
"I've seen him around. I hate to mention, but you do realize he's a vampire don't you?"
Nathaniel stared at her in surprise. He mentally cursed himself for not knowing. A Watcher is supposed to be able to tell these things. Looking back, he supposed that it should have at least been suspicious. After all, they had waited until Nathaniel invited them in before even making a move to enter the house.
"Don't look so upset," Lissa said. "He's had a lot of practice being human. I heard that even the Slayer didn't know right away."
"And Whistler?"
"I don't know anything about his friend. I just know that Angel is a vampire. But he's a little like me. Don't worry, he doesn't bite. Good."
"Good?"
"It makes my job easier. I can find where Angel is staying. Unless you have an address?"
"Somewhere. I'll go get it."
Nathaniel turned again, this time heading for his library. He thought he remembered that Angel had written their address on a card or something, the question was finding it.
He was still looking for the address when he heard the front door slam open. Then he heard Lissa shout.
"Nathaniel! Get out!"
Nathaniel wasn't going to question it, but before he got a chance to head for the back door, something heavy slammed against the back of his head. The last thing he thought as his world became fuzzy and dark was of Lissa. He hoped she would be able to get out. Then the world was black and silent.
