Buffy and Cordelia sat at a table in the corner of The Bronze watching Willow and Xander dance to a slow song.
"Ugh. I never pictured them as a couple." Cordelia said disgustedly.
"Maybe you should spend more time on your own dating problems. Then you wouldn't be so put out whenever someone else has some luck." Buffy said thoughtfully.
Cordelia snorted. "As if you should know. All you have is Angel."
Buffy shot her an incensed look. "Angel is more than enough."
"Right. And I'm the poster girl for Marilyn Manson." Cordelia said.
Buffy laughed. Just then, Angel walked through the door and strode up to their table. He extended his hand to Buffy without so much as a glance at Cordelia. "May I have this dance?" He asked Buffy.
Buffy smiled. "But, of course." She took his hand and stood, casting a meaningful glance at Cordelia over her shoulder as she walked away.
Buffy and Angel were just finishing their third dance when Buffy wrinkled up her nose. "I smell something burning."
Angel appeared thoughtful as he snifed the air. "You're right. There is something on fire."
A moment later, someone screamed, "Fire!" Panic ensued.
People were screaming and milling toward the door in a frenzy. In the chaos, Buffy and Angel were separated.
Willow,Xander,Buffy and Cordelia joined up as soon as they were out of The Bronze.
"Where's Angel?" Buffy asked breathlessly.
Willow looked frightened. "I don't know. I thought he got out with you."
"Xander?" Buffy asked with a pleading look in her eyes. Suddenly, their faces were tinted amber by the flames that shot out of the roof ot The Bronze.
"I...I didn't see him. Maybe he got out before you did and thought you were still in there. He might've gone back in." Xander said helplessly.
"No. He wouldn't have gone back in. He'd have to be crazy to do that. Fire can kill him right?" Cordelia said, with her characteristic lack of tact.
Buffy glared at her. Willow and Xander stood helplessly by with the other people who had been in The Bronze. They watched as the roof caved in with a great shower of sparks and burning debris.
"Oh,God. Please let him be alright." Buffy whispered.
A few moments later, firetrucks appeared on the schene and kindly firemen began asking questions, as it was obvious that The Bronze couldn't be saved.
"Do you know if everyone got out alright? Anyone missing?"a fireman asked Buffy.
"My boyfriend...I don't know if he made it out. I can't find him." Buffy said shakily.
"What does he look like?Maybe he got out and he's just on the other side of the building." The fireman said sympathetically.
"No.If he had gotten out, he'd be here, with me." Buffy said sadly, trying to blink back tears.
"If he's still in there, was he wearing anything that might be used to identify him? Jewelry, perhaps?" another fireman asked.
The first fireman glared at the second one for his insensitivity.
"A ring. It matches mine. But that's all you'd find. He'd be nothing but ashes by now." Buffy said, more to herself than to the firemen.
"What did she say?" the second fireman asked the first.
"You guys are so brain-dead. Her boyfriend will only be ashes because he's a--" Cordelia was cut off bu Xander clapping a hand over her mouth.
"Speaking of brain-deadness, Willow, take Cordelia home before she starts ranting again,"Xander said to Willow. Then he turned to the firemen."She always gets like weird when she's around a lot of smoke."
Willow nodded and grabbed Cordelia's hand. Cordelia favored Xander with a less than friendly look before allowing herself to be led away.
Buffy sat down heavily. One of the firemen got her a blanket.
"Are you alright, miss? Do you need an ambulance?" the first fireman asked, a worried look in his eyes.
"No. I'm fine.I just need to find Angel." she muttered.
The second fireman looked skeptical. "Did she say she needed an angel?"
The first fireman shot his coworker a warning glance. "Shut-up, Baxter."
Baxter shrugged. "I was just thinking that she might be religious."
