Ch. 1: Rebirth
"No way," Cordelia Chase groaned, as she peered down on Earth. The Power, clothed in a beautiful floor-length white sleeveless dress silently cursed herself. Her white sandals clicked on the marble floor and she raked a hand through her waist-length mane of dark, wavy hair. "No - freakin' - way."
"What is it, Cordy?" Francis Doyle asked in his lilting Irish accent, coming from behind a misty-white cloud.
"Look! Look for yourself!" Cordelia said, pointing to the well between them. The mystical water could reflect anywhere on Earth, past, present or future.
"And what am I supposed to be seein'?...Oh, hello..."
"You can look at strippers later, Doyle," Cordelia snapped. "How you got to be a Power..." She waved her hand over the water. It was as if she'd dropped a pebble into the water. Ripples began to spread outward from the center of the pool of water, and the image changed from scantily-clad girls dancing around poles to a forest scenery.
"Still not seein' the cause for alarm, there," Doyle replied, leaning against one of the marble pillars.
"Keep looking," Cordelia replied. She waved her hand over the water again, and it was as if a magnifying glass was placed over the area. They could see what looked like the mouth of a cave, surrounded by a dense forest, one that seemed to stretch for worlds beyond. Lying all around the opening of the cave were pieces of marble, with ancient-looking symbols etched in. "Look familiar?"
"It's open..." Doyle began slowly. "Cordelia, this isn't good."
"No, ya think?" She replied sarcastically. "Find the others, get them here. Now."
"Ay ay, Captain," Doyle quipped, giving her a mock-salute. He disappeared into the clouds, and a few second later, came back with the rest of the Powers That Be.
"Cordelia, what's wrong?" Willow asked, her red hair flowing behind her.
"Cor, this better be good," Faith remarked, tripping slightly on her dress. "Not like that time you thought you saw the cockroach-"
"Well, it looked like a cockroach-"
"They don't have cockroaches in the Higher Plain-"
"Enough," Spike interjected.
"Yeah," Xander joined in. "Stop with the arguin' already."
"No, I meant enough with the bloody Roman theme," he corrected, pulling on his toga. "I move we change it to a Western theme. ...What?" He asked, off everyone's looks. "I've always had a thing for the boots with the little spurs on 'em."
"Can we get back to the issue at hand?" Giles asked. "Cordelia, what is so urgent that you had to summon us all here?"
"It's open," she said darkly.
"Are you sure?" Wesley asked carefully.
"Look for yourself," she replied, pointing to the well. seven heads peered down at the water, and saw the cave. Inside, it was empty.
"Bloody hell," Spike said quietly.
"What the hell are we gonna do now?" Faith asked no one in particular. "Cordy, why didn't you destroy all that stuff instead of sealin' it away? That never works!"
"You can't destroy magick, Faith," Willow explained. "It's energy, a force. You can move it, shift it, but-"
"Then why didn't ya shift it to another dimension or somethin'?"
"That would throw the universe out of balance. Every dimension, every reality, has magick in it, every one. But the amount of magick proportioned is-"
"Enough with the lecture, Red," Spike interrupted. "The question is, what do we do now?"
"We are the Powers That Be, those which oversee all universes, and we have no idea what we're doing. Splendid," Giles remarked sarcastically.
"It's just like before," Xander said, his voice quiet and hollowed. "It's just like before the Hellmouth was closed and the Senior Partners got locked out of our dimension. God, it's like we didn't make a difference at all."
"Send me down there," Faith announced.
"What?" Wesley looked at his former Slayer in confusion.
"I said, send me down there. If it's just like before, then we're gonna need some warriors on our side. We need a Slayer. So send me down there. Together, we have enough power."
"No, Faith." Cordelia shook her head. "We can't."
"Why the hell not?"
"Because, having you down there, that would mean that you couldn't be a Power anymore."
"Honestly, I'm not too thrilled about the idea, 'cause Ruler of Everything? It's a pretty good place to be. But we need someone down there."
"You'll throw off the balance. There's nine Partners, and nine of us. You can't do that." Faith made a face.
"Stupid 'balance-of-the-universe'..." They all watched on as portals began to open up all over the world, at various times. Out stepped all kinds of creatures, and-
"Vampires," Gunn observed. "Damn it!" He pounded on the marble pillar, and was immensely glad that he couldn't feel pain. He'd always had a thing against vampires. The only exception to that would be Spike and...
"Angel," he breathed.
"Y'know, I haven't seen any around as of late," Willow remarked. "I wonder why. Not like we haven't been friendly to 'em. Just the other day I was askin' Gabriel over for some cookies and Yahtzee."
"Guess angels don't like Yahtzee." Xander replied.
"But what about the cookies? Everyone loves a good cookie-"
"No," Cordelia began slowly, beginning to smile. "Not angels. Angel." Willow's eyes lit up.
"We send Angel down there-"
"It's bloody brilliant," Doyle grinned.
"I still say I shoulda gone down," Faith muttered. "C'mon. Vampires? Slayer? Connection's not that hard to - Buffy!"
"What?" Giles asked, unsure of what Faith had just said.
"I said that Dead Boy's happy already up in Heaven, what with finally bein' with the Buffster," Xander said. "Much as I-"
"So we send Buffy down, too," Faith grinned. "It's perfect."
"Can we do that?" Willow asked. "Can we put them both through all that again? I mean, when we resurrected Buffy, when we pulled her out of here...Can we really do that again?"
"We don't have a choice, Red," Spike said softly. "Magick's out, unleashed on the world again. And then there are vampires...It's just like Faith said. We need warriors for our side. Can't think of anyone better than Angel or Buffy. ...Apart from myself," he added.
"I guess," Willow began, still a bit uncomfortable with the whole idea.
"So are we gonna resurrect them," Cordelia asked, "or-?"
"We can't, because...their bodies were never found after the fight, remember?" Gunn reminded her.
"Then we'll reincarnate them," Wesley spoke up.
"Congratulations, Miss," the doctor said, speaking quietly. "It's a boy." The young girl lay on the bed, completely exhausted after just giving birth to her child. She looked pale and weak, but managed a weak smile.
"A boy?...I have a son?" Her voice was quiet and she sounded so very tired. Tears ran down her cheeks. "I-I'm a mother?"
"Yes," the doctor smiled, handing her the newborn, wrapped in blankets.
"Oh, he's so beautiful," she breathed. "I, I don't know...what to-" Her eyes glazed over slightly. "Angel," she whispered.
"I'm sorry?"
"I'll name him Angel."
"Couldn't be a bit more creative, Faith?" Cordelia asked, as they watched the scene. Faith grinned and shrugged.
"Yes, I'll name him Angel," the girl said resolutely, as she handed her son back to the doctor. She managed one more smile, and then her heart gave out.
2 Years Later...
"Sonia, push!" Sonia's husband, Ryan hovered around her with the camcorder, capturing every second of their daughter's birth.
"Get that damn thing out of my face," she gasped.
"Tsk tsk," the doctor said, smiling. "There are children around, you know." He wrapped the newborn baby girl in blankets, and gave her to the nurse to be cleaned off.
"Oh my Lord I never ever want to do that again, I don't care how much..." Sonia trailed off as she looked into the tiny face of her new daughter. "Ryan, let's have another one." The doctor chuckled.
"What should we name her?" Ryan asked, the camcorder at his side. At that instant, both his and his wife's eyes glazed over, and they said simultaneously, "Buffy."
"So, that would be Buffy Summers, then?" The doctor asked, making a note of it.
"Yes, Buffy Summers," they said in unison. "No."
"No?" The doctor echoed.
"No, Buffy Anne Summers."
"Giles," Xander grinned.
"Well, no sense in leaving out the middle name, is there?"
