Prologue: The Beginning of the End

Sunnydale, California: 2003

Into every generation, a Slayer is born. One girl in all the world, a Chosen One. One born with the strength and skills to hunt the vampires and stop the spread of their evil and the swell of their numbers.

Buffy walked into the living room where all the Potentials and her friends were assembled. She took center stage and began to speak. "I hate being here. I hate that you have to be here. I hate that there's evil, and that I was chosen to fight it. I wish a whole lot of the time that I hadn't been. I know a lot of you wish I hadn't been, either," she said wryly, glancing at Kennedy and Rona.

"But this isn't about wishes. This is about choices. I believe we can beat this evil. Not when it comes, not when its army is ready. Now. Tomorrow morning, I'm opening up the seal. I'm going down into the Hellmouth and I'm finishing this once and for all. Right now you're asking yourself, 'What makes this different? What makes us anything more than a bunch of girls being picked off one by one?' It's true; none of you have the power that Faith and I do.

"So here's the part where you make a choice: What if you could have that power...now? In every generation, one Slayer is born...because a bunch of men who died thousands of years ago made up that rule. They were powerful men. This woman," she continued, pointing to Willow, "is more powerful than all of them combined." Willow smiled nervously and gave a small whimper.

"So I say we change the rule." Buffy began to smile, and Faith looked on at her sister-Slayer with pride. "I say my power should be
our power. Tomorrow, Willow will use the essence of the scythe to change our destiny.

"From now on, every girl in the world who
might be a Slayer...will be a Slayer. Every girl who could have the power...will have the power...can stand up, will stand up. Slayers...every one of us. Make your choice. Are you ready to be strong?"...

~~~
Buffy looked on at the gaping crater that was once Sunnydale, California, a.k.a. the Hellmouth. Willow, Xander, Dawn, Giles, and Faith were around her, while the school bus full of new Slayers was off to the side.
"The First is scrunched, so...what d'you think we should do now, Buffy?" Willow asked, her red hair billowing in the breeze.
"Yeah, you're not the one and only Chosen anymore," Faith remarked, smiling. She also felt the burden of Slayerness being lifted. "Just gotta live like a person. How's that feel?"
"Yeah, Buffy," Dawn said, coming up beside her sister. "What
are we gonna do now?" Buffy looked at what was once Sunnydale, considered the question, and began to smile.
Los Angeles, California: 2004
The rain poured down all around them, thunder shook the sky, and lightning threatened to send the world into oblivion. It was the end. It was the Apocalypse. They could see the demons coming, could hear their horrible cries.
"Okay, you take the thirty thousand on the left," Gunn began wearily.
"You're fading," Illyria countered. "You'll last ten minutes at best."
"Then let's make 'em memorable," Gunn replied, standing up.
"And in terms of a plan?" Spike asked, trying to be heard over the rain.
"We fight," Angel replied.
"Bit more specific?"
"Well, personally? I kinda wanna slay the dragon." Angel stepped to the front of the group and raised his sword. In his eyes gleamed determination and defiance. He knew they probably wouldn't make it out alive. But they were going to do this. This was why he was brought back from Hell, this was his greater purpose. "Now, let's go to work."
No one really knows what happened that night, in the alley behind the Hyperion Hotel. Some people said they saw great monsters clambering down the streets, destroying everything in their wake. Others heard the sounds of a great battle, and some even saw distant figures: a tall man in dark clothing; a woman with long blue hair; a white-haired woman flying to the scene, her fingers crackling with magick; a flood of women -all shapes, sizes, races, and ages- with weapons coming down the rain-soaked roads, led by a woman with long, blonde hair, and another with dark, wavy hair.
All anyone knew was what happened after. Because after, the world was saved -in a manner of speaking. There were no more demons, no more vampires. No more creatures that went bump in the night. But the world had been pushed into chaos. War, destruction, death, everywhere. For a much more deadly force had been unleashed that night, greater than any hellgod alive: Fear. It was Hell on Earth from then on.
The Powers That Be foresaw this, but could not interfere in human affairs. This did not concern them; it was caused by the humans alone and therefore had nothing to do with the fight against evil.
But one Power foresaw events beyond that time -she had been a Seer in a past life on Earth. She knew that the humans could plunge the entire universe into chaos if they brought magick into their affairs. She instructed her messengers on Earth, and they did as were told. They gathered up all spellbooks that survived, mystical items, everything, and sealed it in a chamber far below the Earth, to never be opened again. The world, she knew, would be a better place without magick.
Centuries later, however, that chamber that was far below the earth came a little closer to the surface, what with the shifting of the tectonic plates and all. It was found and opened and magick was once again discovered. Unknowingly, humans created portals to other dimensions. Enter the demons. Enter the vampires.
Enter Angel and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, by way of the Powers That Be.
