Disclaimer: Note: This is a "what-if" story that takes place after "Angel".

Buffy was having a bad day. Actually, it was more than bad. She failed her history test, scolded by Giles, put down by Cordelia and forgot her umbrella. Buffy walked home and slammed the door behind her. She was soaking wet and dripped water everywhere. She proceeded up to her room where she changed and stabbed at her diary. Buffy wrote about her day and then screamed into her pillow. She wasn't juggling this slaying thing well with her school life.

After that whole thing with Darla, the Master Vamp has sent more than 10 vampires to attack Buffy. None of them succeeded of course and Buffy staked every last one of them. She guessed that Master Vamp wasn't happy that ol' cheerleader girl was staked.

Buffy missed Angel. He hasn't shown up for a long time. No warnings, rescues, or mysterious glances. He was serious when he said he needed to get away from this. Angel was right. Buffy needed to get away from this too. But where ever she might goes, the vamps follow.

Buffy was fingering her cross while doing her homework. Math was too warped to comprehend. She closed her book and leapt onto her bed with her diary. Buffy twirled her long hair while looking out her window. A breeze floated in. Buffy turned her attention back to her diary and wrote down her day.

Across Buffy's bedroom window was a house, on the roof of that house was a being. He sat at the edge looking into Buffy's window, admiring her beauty. He looked at her as she wrote down every detail of her life, watched as she rubbed her cross. He unconsciously touched the cross-shaped burn mark on his chest. It would awhile before it fades away.

Buffy shut her diary and changed into her PJs. She flopped back onto the bed and soon she was asleep. The being on the roof top crossed the distance between them and perched just outside Buffy's open window. He watched her and thought how pretty and serene she was when she was asleep. He observed for the better part of an hour.
Buffy's deep breathing signaled to him that she was finally heavily asleep enough that she would not be easily awaken. He climbed into her room and walked slowly up to the bed. He kneeled beside her and brushed away a stray lock of hair from her forehead. Buffy suddenly broke into a smile and whispered his name.

he smiled at the realization. He got up to leave just as Buffy started to talk in her sleep.

"I love you Angel." Those four little words seared themselves into his heart. He would never leave her, he would protect her until the day she dies. He bent down and whispered into her ear,

"I love you too." Then he brushed his lips gently against her forehead, and was gone.

Buffy was in a dreamy mood the next day. But she concentrated pretty well despite being dreamy. During lunch break, Willow confronted Buffy.
"What's with you Buffy? You're as if you're on another planet!"

"I just had this dream last night..." Then Buffy drifted off again. Willow demanded to know what the dream was. "Okay, well, I dreamed that Angel visited me during the night while I was asleep and then he told me that he loved me." Buffy smiled at the memory.

"Ooohhh! That's sooo sweet. So romantic!" Willow gushed. She was a fan of this whole romance-y thing with Angel.

"I can't stand it any longer. I can't be with him because he's a vampire and I'm a slayer. I'm sick of it!" Buffy frowned. "There's gotta be some way to unvamperize him isn't there?"

Buffy went to Giles at the end of the day with that question. The answer wasn't exactly hopeful.

"Once the demon has taken hold of the host body, there is no separating them. They are united as one. And when you kill the demon within..."

"You killed the person too." Buffy finished the sentence. She wanted so desperately for Angel to be human so they could be together. But he was a demon at the core, despite his added soul and conscience. Buffy groaned. Giles knew how difficult it must be for the girl. He searched his mind for a solution and came up with a half answer type one.

"But," Buffy looked up with hope in her eyes as Giles started up again, "I remember reading in one of the Watcher diaries..." Giles walked to one of the older, more hidden bookcases and pulled out a dusty, moldy volume. Giles slammed it down onto the desk and opened it to some page or another.

"Here it is, Adeline. Adeline was a slayer like yourself. Her Watcher was Michelle. Michelle have written here a situation almost like yours." Giles read through the passage and then read it out loud for Buffy.

"Adeline has acquainted herself to a certain young vampire named Andrew. He is different from all the rest we have encountered. He appears to have a conscience which prevented him from the usual killing. He arranged a meeting with Adeline because he believe that she might know a way to 'devamperize' him. Unfortunately, neither Adeline nor myself have ever known a vampire to change back to what he was before. Andrew has struck a chord in Adeline and they have become friends. He occasionally defended her in her duties and has been a valuable asset to some of our research."

"However, Andrew has taken a leave of absence due to the fact that he fears that he might injure us in his 'vampire frenzy'. Adeline and I researched all the records trying to find a way to undo what has been done to him. We have found nothing. The passage goes on about random things and then,"

Giles flipped through a couple of pages, "Here. After much tiring research with the help of the returned Andrew, we appear to have found some information that might help us in our cause. Apparently, the psyche of the person taken over will not depart unless they are willing. The demon and the person does not necessarily have be merged into one. As long as the person is willing to purge the demon within, it can be done. We perform many experiments and we believe to be close to the answer. This will, one day, eliminate the need to destroy innocent people and return them to their normal lives. The diary of Michelle ends there." Giles put down the book.

"So? Why did it end? Is there something that could help me?" Buffy asked.

"Andrew wasn't as sincere as Adeline and Michelle thought. He was really a minion of the Master Vampire. Michelle was drained by Andrew and Adeline threw herself into a fire to prevent her blood from being taken." Buffy was shocked. They were so close, and yet so far.

"Did Michelle write down some of her research? Maybe if we just follow up on it..." Buffy insisted.

Giles place his hand on her shoulder, trying to comfort Buffy. "I'm sorry Buffy. Michelle's research died with her."
