It was a beautiful night. The moon was out, the stars were shining and the smell of jasmine filled the air. It was the creature's eighty-seventh birthday and the whole tribe of Gypsies she was staying with had prepared a feast for her.

The creature knew that she was different from any to have walked the earth before her. She was stuck in the lives of two immortal creatures.

The night the werewolf had attacked her, she had come close to a mortal death, but instead had been left that night with an immortal curse. And when the two vampires had broken into her prison cell, they too had come baring a gift; the gift of eternal life and everlasting youth. Though when the male had drunk of her contaminated blood, it had been too much for him to bare and before he could complete siring her, she had killed him.

These two events had left her trapped, between living the life of a werewolf and that of a demon, in the form of a vampire. However, they had also left her with a much treasured possession; a soul.

Young girls danced and sang as a huge bonfire burned in the centre of the camp. A Gypsy elder came toward her and bowing down, thanked her for all her help in protecting them from the many creatures of the night that had tried to kill them all. The girl smiled. She was honoured that they appreciated her. The Gypsy man held out his hand.

In it sat a golden band, encrusted with the most beautiful stone the creature had ever seen.

Giles felt guilty for having let Buffy patrol alone. It was becoming an all too common occurrence of late. She was used to having people back her up in battle and this sudden abandonment had left her vulnerable. He hadn't been feeling well, that was true, but it was still no excuse. He of all people, should be fighting the forces of darkness alongside her. After all, he was her Watcher.

Just as he was about to get up to go and look for her, there was a sharp knock on his door.

It was not unusual for Giles to receive such late callers and he half expected his visitor to be Buffy. But when the door swung open to reveal Angel standing on the other side, Giles was quite unnerved.

Although Angel was good now, and had been for quite some time, Giles couldn't shake the memory of Jenny Calendar and her death; as well as his own torture, both of which had happened at the hands of the evil Angelus

Angel too, was uneasy about being alone with Giles. He couldn't help but remember the last time he had called. When the apparent ghost of Jenny Calendar had been haunting him, Giles hadn't allowed him past the front door without first arming himself with a cross bow.

Though after a few minutes of small talk, both man and creature of the night seemed to put their differences aside and Giles proceeded to invite Angel in, not even contemplating arming himself.

Xander and Cordelia drove back to Xander's in silence. As usual, Cordy had been in one of her uptight moods and Xander had said something to upset her. As usual, Xander wouldn't and couldn't apologise because he had no idea what it was that he had said wrong in the first place.

Just as they were turning the corner into Xander's street, they saw a strange young girl duck behind a garden hedge.

"Look suspicious to you?" Xander asked in his best cop voice.

"No, you half wit! It IS possible that she is just a normal girl, sneaking home after curfew!" Cordelia snapped back, obviously still pissed at Xander's earlier remarks.

"Whatever..." Xander began again. "But just you remember that we live on the Hellmouth and nothing is ever as it seems." They continued to drive in silence, and by the time Cordelia had pulled into Xander's driveway, the young mystery girl had been forgotten.

Angel sat on Giles's lounge and watched as the Watcher made a pot of tea; brought two mugs and an antique pot over to the small coffee table that sat in the centre of the floor and began to poor the hot tea into the cups.

"Do you have cream or sugar?" Giles asked, quite innocently.

Angel smiled and told him that however Giles had his would be fine.

Giles realised his error and apologised but Angel assured him it was fine and that he was quite capable of eating and drinking, although it didn't give him any nutritional value.

Once the Watcher and the demon who was in love with the Slayer, were both seated, Angel began.

He told Giles that he had reason to believe an old friend of his was in town. Giles seemed interested and urged Angel to go on. Angel assured him that the demon, Amara, was a friend not a foe but he also told Giles that she didn't exactly travel alone.
