When Angel woke up that evening Whistler was still in the living room with books and papers spread out around him. Angel just glanced at the mess then went into the kitchen.
"You were runnin' low on blood," Whistler called. "I picked you some up from the butcher's"
"Yeah, thanks."
Angel took out a plastic container. He placed it on the counter and got out a bottle. Using a funnel, he poured the blood from the container into the bottle. Then Angel went into the living room. He looked at the mess again and picked up a book.
"I didn't know you even had a library card," Angel said.
"Didn't 'til today."
"Demons of the Orient? What's this about? Researching your family tree?"
"No. Watched a woman get hit by a bus today."
"Oh, what's that have to do with demons?"
"She was rambling about some Dark Lord and had this tattoo on her wrist."
Whistler handed Angel a piece of notebook paper that had the symbol on it. Angel looked at it a moment. Then he shook his head.
"I don't recognize it." Angel said.
"Naw, me neither. Hence the library books. What we need is a watcher. This isn't nearly enough information."
"We don't have a watcher Whistler."
"No, but there's one real close by."
"We're not going to Giles for questions. I don't..."
"No, I know. But I've been thinking. Are there other watchers out there?"
Angel was quiet for a moment. He sat on the edge of the couch.
"Yeah," Angel said. "I remember something about Kendra. She said she was taken from her parents as a child. That would watchers out there training them."
"You know where?"
"No."
"Then we still need to call Giles."
"Whistler, I'm not so sure he'll help us."
"Worth a try. I'll call you wait there. And eat. God, you're making me nervous, you don't eat enough." Whistler cracked a smile. "You're too thin, how ya gonna get a husband?"
Angel just stared at Whistler silently.
"Right, right, bad joke. Never mind Angel."
Whistler reached over and grabbed the phone. Angel took a drink from his bottle and his eyes closed reflexively. It was almost fresh. Though cold, it tasted good, and warmed him throughout.
"That good huh?" Whistler asked.
Angel opened his eyes, fully aware that the demon was starting to show in his eyes.
"That good." Whistler said quietly. "Though not nearly enough. Anyway."
Whistler picked up the phone and dialed while Angel watched. Angel sat on the arm of the couch and listened to Whistler's side of the conversation.
"Hey, yeah, Xander right? This is Whistler....Whistler....You know, the demon guy?....yeah the one who's friends with dead-boy....Right. Can I talk to Giles? Yeah, that'd be great." Whistler turned to Angel and raised an eyebrow. "Dead boy?"
"Yeah, don't ask."
"Hey, Giles....Whistler....yeah....look, I gotta problem. I need the help of a Watcher, but it'd help to have one nearby....Well, yeah I know you got oaths and everything, but Giles....Secrecy or no....Look, someone's already dead because of this thing, whatever it is. Do you want another death on your head you wouldn't help? I sure don't....Nathaniel Smythe, 1593 West Banks. Thank you very much Giles...." Whistler glanced at Angel. "And....uh....tell Buffy Angel says 'hi'."
Whistler hung up the phone.
"We got ourselves a Watcher," he said.
