Disclaimer: I do not own any of the characters in this story, although they have been twisted for my own use. I apologize profusely to Joss Whedon for my butchering of his creation. Buffy The Vampire Slayer is owned by Joss Whedon, Mutant Enemy, Sandollar Television, Kuzui Enterprises, 20th Century Fox Television and the WB Television Network. Wow, that's a mouthful!
Author's Notes: This takes place after Fallen Angel and exists outside of Buffy continuity. In other words, in this Buffy-verse, Angel left before the ascesion since well, I wrote this before fourth season.

Part One

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Angel walked down the busy street. It never ceased to amaze him that Los Angeles could be so full of people, even late at night. New York had been a little like this, but he had gotten used to Sunnydale, where people only went out at night to go to the Bronze. Sometimes he wondered if the teenagers even went to school. He kept his hands in his pockets and his head down.

"Hey big boy," a woman on the street said.

"You look like you're lonely. Why don't you take me back to your place, and I'll keep you company."

Angel looked at the woman for a moment. She couldn't have been too much older than Buffy. Fresh out of high school, assuming this women even went. He rustled around in his pocket and pulled out some bills. The woman looked at him in surprise as he pressed the money into her hands.

"Usually, you pay afterwards," She said. "Haven't you done this before?"

Angel just started to walk away.

"Hey!" She shouted after him. "Come back! paid for a night. I swear, some people in this God forsaken city are out of their minds."

Angel didn't say a word. He just continued to walk away. He didn't really think she'd use the money for anything worth while, like getting herself out of this place. But that was one less trick she had to turn this night.

Sometimes he wondered what had possessed him to come to Los Angeles. Of all the places could have picked. There were too many people. It was a strain to walk down the street calmly. He had been here a month already, and still had no clue as to why he was here.

A yelp of sound shook Angel out of his thoughts. He turned and looked down the darkened alley that he was passing. In the shadows, he could see a young girl and a dirty looking man facing off. He caught the distinct smell of 'vampire'. Angel slipped into the shadows of the alley, not entirely sure which one was the vampire. He watched for a minute, trying to decide if he should step in.

The man stepped forward, brandishing a knife. The girl stood her ground. The man rushed her and she grabbed his arm, squeezing his wrist hard enough to make him drop the knife. The man cried out in pain. The girl brought her elbow down on his neck and his face slammed down on the pavement. He was out cold. The girl grabbed his hair and pulled his head off the ground. There was blood coming out of his nose. She wiped her fingers in the blood.

"You want some?" She asked.

Angel stepped out of the shadows, not surprised that she knew he was there.

"Come on," she said. "It's fresh. And you look hungry."

Angel looked at the man's face.

"Fine, more for me. Case you're wondering, this scum deserves to die. He was going to rape me. If he lives he'll rape again."

"I'm surprised you haven't killed him yet." Angel said softly. "After all he did to you."

"I should. But you know, I thought you'd do it me. You being a creature of the night and all. Though you look a little worn around the edges. Don't get out much?"

"I don't feed much, if that's what you mean."

"Man, how rude am I? The name's Lissa, and you?"

Angel raised an eyebrow. He looked at the man's face again.

"Angel," he finally said.

"The Angel? The tortured-cause-I-gotta-soul Angel?"

"Didn't know I was so well known."

"Oh yeah. Lots of vamps have heard of you. I mean it's not every vamp that gets cursed by gypsies."

She became quiet suddenly. Her eyes went downcast. The man groaned. Lissa shrugged.

"Alright," she said. "I won't kill him."

Lissa dropped the guy onto the pavement and rolled him over on his back.

"But I am going to give him a parting gift."

She ground her heel into the guy's groin. The guy practically screamed even though he was still unconscious. Angel had the grace to wince. Lissa straightened her jacket and slightly at Angel.

"Well," she said. "See ya around."

Angel watched in shock as she stepped around guy's body. She smiled at Angel sweetly and stepped past him. Angel just watched her go. He figured that he couldn't just stake her cause she protected herself against the guy. Besides, there was something about her. He couldn't put his finger on it, but he knew there was something different about her.
