Disclaimer: I do not own any of the characters in this story, although they have been twisted for my own use. I apologize profusely to Joss Whedon for my butchering of his creation. Buffy The Vampire Slayer is owned by Joss Whedon, Mutant Enemy, Sandollar Television, Kuzui Enterprises, 20th Century Fox Television and the WB Television Network. Wow, that's a mouthful!

Part Seven: Like a Bat Outta Hell

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Angel said nothing. Darla helped him to his feet.

"You must be starving Angel," she said. "Lucas will find you someone nice to eat."

Lucas laughed in triumph.

"What's the matter Whistler?" Lucas said." Suddenly without words? How nice. I like the silence."

"Come on Angel," Darla continued. "I know you must be anxious to feed".

Angel's head had been lowered during the conversations. He looked up at Darla suddenly, a light in his eyes. He grabbed Darla around the shoulders.

"Feed on this," He said menacingly.

Angel rammed her into a wall. He kept his hands on her shoulders.

"You are dead," he said in a low voice. "I killed you. You are not real.:

Darla suddenly exploded into dust, much like a vampire being staked. Angel blinked for a moment. He turned back to Lucas. But Lucas had changed. His skin was now a deeper red and looked as if it was almost rotting off his bones. His clothes were ragged, and there was a deep evil red light in his eyes.

"You've seen through my illusions," Lucas said, his voice now scratchy and harsh. "This is not possible."

"Looks like I've done the impossible yet again. You hold no power over me Lucas."

"He is right, you have lost," Natasha stepped out of the shadows. "His will is strong and his heart is good."

"Natasha?" Angel said, not quite understanding.

"When I died Angel, I was given a choice. Perhaps because of the goodness in my heart, whatever, I was given a choice. And I chose to become a sort of anti-demon. I'm not an angel, no, but a creature with power. Demons cannot force you to do something you know, they must get your agreement. You must come willingly."

"So, you sent Bromok against him knowing he' d win," Whistler said.

"No, I didn't know for sure. I was hoping. I knew that if he won, it would fuel his self-reliance. He would become stronger in himself. And you did Angel."

"No!" Lucas shouted. "He will still be mine. He is not whole, and anything broken can become mine!"

"Lucas, you have lost this one. Angel is going home."

"He may go home, but it's not without a price. He will still suffer for what he has done."

"Perhaps. Angel, do you want to go home?"

"Yes. I want to go back to Buffy. I-I want to atone for my sins. I-I want to try to..."

"Hush. You see Lucas. You will go home Angel."

Natasha pointed to a doorway.

"Go on Angel."

Angel slowly made his way to the doorway, hesitant. Then, with a breath, he stepped through. Behind him, he could hear Lucas still shouting angrily. A backwash of hot anger scorched Angel s back. He fell to his knees and realized where he was. It was the atrium where the final battle had taken place. Something was digging into his hand. Angel looked down and saw the cladaugh ring he had give Buffy. He looked up and saw her walking away.

"Buffy?" He said softly.

She stopped suddenly. He could see tenseness in her back.

"Buffy?" He said again.

Buffy turned around very slowly, her eyes shut. He felt his chest get tight. There was so much pain and hurting on her face. She opened her eyes and her mouth fell open.

"Angel? Oh my god."

Angel tried to stand up, to go to her, but his legs were still weak and wouldn't quiet work. Buffy walked slowly to him, searching his face. He tried to show her that his soul was there.

"Buffy. Oh god... I-I..."

He started to cry, tears falling down his face. He was so tired of fighting. Buffy was crying too, no sounds just tears on her face. She knelt down gazing at him.

"Angel... but...I killed you..."

"I-I m so sorry Buffy... My god... what I've done..."

Buffy reached out and touched Angel' s face, still not believing. Suddenly she was holding him tightly, sobbing.

"Angel, you're back. Thank god you're back. I-I loved you...and I killed you... oh Angel."

He couldn't talk anymore. It was such a relief to be in her arms again. They just knelt there holding each other and crying. Angel knew there were things that had to be worked out, but for now he didn't care. He was no longer a fallen angel in hell, as far as he was concerned, this was heaven.
