Part Six: Is Not the War
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Angel felt his stomach flip over. They were being transported, and it wasn't easy. After a few moments, they were in a cave. It wasn't an extraordinary cave. It was a lot like the Master's cave had been. There were pools of bubbling blood, or what looked like it, and a red tinge to everything. At the far end there was a throne of some sorts. Seated on the throne was an impressive looking man. He looked tall and was dressed all in black, black turtleneck and jeans. His skin was tinged red as well. He had a goatee and horns near his temple.
"Aw come on Lucas," Whistler said. "You got to be kidding me. You're flattering yourself, you ain’t the Devil anymore than I am."
"Whistler, you have been a thorn in my side for long enough. You know who our master is."
"No, I know you your master is. Like I said before, I'm a free agent"
"I know that Whistler. Never putting your hands into something because it might unbalance the cosmos. For a Balancer you have put a lot of stock in one person haven't you?"
Angel watched this trying to catch his breath. His hands and shoulder hurt like hell. He tried to stand up, but his legs weren't cooperating.
"Now, Angel," Lucas said. "Why do you fight me so hard? You are a vampire, one of my children."
Whistler snorted. Lucas gave him an angry look.
"All right, one of my master's children. Either way, you are mine. I grow tired of this game. You have put up an admirable fight. I am quite impressed, but I have reached the end of my patience. Come to me Angel."
Angel shook his head.
"No," Angel said shakily. "Not again."
"Oh Angel, your whining is most unbecoming. And you sound like a broken record. Fine, I have one more person to talk with you. If she can't convince you to come willingly, no person will."
Lucas gestured towards a small opening in the cave. A youngish looking girl stepped out of the shadows.
"Hello Angel," Darla said. "Surprise."
"It's a regular family reunion here," Whistler said quietly.
Angel was surprised to feel a twinge of guilt and regret looking at Darla. She had not been a good person. Of course that was typical of most vampires. Angel didn’t know a lot of good ones.
"I know," Darla said. "I look good for a dusted vampire, but well, this place does wonders for the skin."
Darla stepped close to Angel. He was still struggling to stand up.
"Oh, Angel," She said. "I still can't believe you staked me. Your own sire. I opened the world up to you, and how do you repay me? By denying your nature and staking me. It's not right. A vampire staking his own sire is just not how things are done. How would you have felt if Spike had staked you?"
"He came close."
"You always were rivaling him for Drusilla. Oh yes, I knew." Darla knelt down by him. "Give in Angel. You're weak, and you can't fight it for long. Come back to me. You almost did once."
"I-I can't hurt her again."
Darla slapped him hard.
"That damned Slayer! Your thoughts go back to her. You really think she's still thinking about you now? You're dead as far as she cares. She'd never be there for you forever anyway. Not like I would have been. Angel, oh Angel, look, you are a vampire, there's nothing wrong with it. Revel in it. Feed, kill, destroy, it's your nature."
Angel closed his eyes tight, a tear slipping away.
"You remember Angel. I promised to show you the world. I did, didn't I? And you betrayed me. Remember Angel."
He remembered. How could he forget? He remembered that pain filled night where he received his soul again. He remembered escaping quickly and running away, praying he could escape the pain. It never happened. He remembered vowing never to feed directly from a human again. It was all as if it had just happened.
"I can never forget Darla," Angel said quietly. "You know that. I ran because of what I had done. Of what you made me."
"No Angel, I merely gave you a gift. Were you all that much of a man? What would have happened if you had remained human? What would you have done with your life? You would have run out of money eventually. Your father was getting ready to disown you anyway. You would have resorted to thievery and murder. That is what your life would have been. And what did I do? I embraced you into the night. I showed you untold wonders. I gave you the means to do what your nature told you."
Angel shook his head.
"No," he said. "I never--"
"Think about it. Think very hard. Responsibility was not your thing. You never would have lasted in a job. And your friends were not the sort to lead you the right way."
Angel felt something click deep inside him. Things seemed to fall into place. His eyes opened and were full of darkness. Darla smiled knowingly.
"You're right," Angel said. "Killing comes naturally to me. Everything I touch leads to death. I might as well embrace it."
"Angel?" Whistler said, disbelief in his voice. "What about the kid?"
"Come on Whistler. She's a slayer. Maybe we thought we were in love, but it can't be possible. I'm a vampire. Everything about that means that I'm a demon. Evil."
"Not all demons are evil. Angel, I'm not evil."
"You're wasting your breath," Darla said triumphantly. "Angel's come home again, I can feel it."
