Part Three

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He hadn’t come back all day. Cordelia was decidedly bored, but she didn’t exactly want to go out into the rest of the factory with all the vampires around. For some reason, she didn’t find herself afraid of Spike anymore. Still, she decided to see if there was anything in the room that she could amuse herself with. All she found was a pile of must old books, novels. She actually read for the rest of the day, her lunch and supper being brought in by Lucius. She was dissapointed it wasn’t Spike, and was afraid of Lucius. She waited for Spike to come, but gave up and went to sleep. Before she fell asleep though, she thought about the events of the past day or so. What really worried her was that she wasn’t thinking about what they might do to her, if Buffy would save her etc. She was thinking about her strange feelings for Spike. He was a vampire, he had been mean to her in the past, she kept telling herself. He was being very nice and considerate to her now, and didn’t seem to really want to hurt her, and she had no reason to hate him. After a fair amount of tossing and turning, she slumbered.

All day Spike was torturing himself. He wanted to go see her, talk to her again, but he didn’t trust himself to go in and bring her any more meals, so he sent Lucius. ~ What am I afraid of? ~ he asked himself. ~ A girl that I could kill in two seconds flat? But I don’t want her dead… ~ He would pace up to the door, begin to turn the door handle, then walk back to his bedroom. In the morning, he took the plate and the cup, took a deep breath and opened the door to Cordy’s room to bring her breakfast. ~ I’m even thinking of it as her room now. ~

To his surprise, he saw her sleeping. She was half-under the covers, with a bare leg sticking out. Her brown hair lay tousled across the pillow. One arm was underneath he pillow, the other lay across the bed. Spike couldn’t help remarking how peaceful she looked, and decided not to wake her. He put the plates down, intending to turn around and leave, but found himself walking towards the bed. He leaned down and stroked her hair for a minute, all thoughts of denial and anything but her gone from his head.

Slowly, he leaned down and very softly kissed her lips. If he hadn’t been so involved he would have been surprised to find Cordelia returning the gentle kiss. Her arms left heir previous positions as she half sat up and wound her arms around his neck and stroked his hair. Spike did the same. They were locked in the embrace for a few more seconds when they slowly broke it off. All the denial, fear disbelief and surprise flooded their minds as Spike returned to his standing position.

“Go.” He said in a harsh, hoarse tone. “Leave, Get out of here, go.”

Cordelia got out of the bed, staring at him in wonder and walked out of the door and out of the mansion. She walked home in a daze, replaying the kiss again and again.

Spike watched he leave with not a little regret. All thoughts of the plan he had had were gone, his mind was quite occupied. He went to his room and tried to sleep in vain.

Cordy returned to her house to find no one had missed her. Her parents were on vacation and it had been the maid’s day off. As if in a trance, she climbed the stairs, picked up the telephone in her room and dialed.

“Willow? I really need to talk to you. Will you come over?”
