Part Two

The girl looked around nervously. She’d always hated this part. But it was the shortest way home. She started. What was that? She scolded herself. It had probably been a cat. She turned back and walked into someone. She yelped. "Oh God!", she said. "I’m so sorry! I didn’t see you!" The person turned around. It was a tall woman, 20-ish, with short, dark-brown hair, streaked with red. She smiled.
"It’s okay. I always hate going through this alley, don’t you? I’m Mel." She stuck out her hand. The girl laughed.
"I’m Kim. Me too, it just gives me the creeps." Together, they walked on. "Sunnydale at night always makes me nervous, it seems that’s when all the scary things come out, at night." The women laughed. "But of course that’s just my imagination."
Mel smiled again. "And there are a lot scarier things than the darkness, right?" Kim nodded.
"I should know."
Mel added with a devilish smirk on her face. "I’m one of them..." She grabbed the girl by the shoulders and before Kim could react, she sank her teeth into her neck. She raised her hand and slashed her wrist with a sharp fingernail. "Drink...Yes, drink..." She held her bloody hand to the girl’s mouth who started sucking at the wound. Salem threw her head back and laughed. "Where’s the Slayer now?!" Kim slumped to the floor, convulsions ripping through her young body. Salem looked on. "Shh, it’ll be over soon..." Minutes later, Kim rose unsteadily.
"W-will you teach me?" The older woman smirked.
"Yes. Come, you have to rest. It’s always like that the first time. And then we’ll find you a meal."
Giles sat in his office, going through the stack of books on his desk. He needed to learn more about the Hellmouth. Suddenly he got the feeling he was being watched. He looked up into the window. No reflection. Still, the librarian turned around. "Oh! H-hello Angel."
"Is...is Buffy here?" Giles shook his head.
"No. She went home. W-were you looking for her?"
"Yeah. Bad news. Salem’s back." Giles looked down for a moment.
"When..." He trailed off. Angel had already disappeared. Giles chuckled. "Now I understand what Buffy means..." Then he frowned at the news. "Most unfortunate, yes.", he muttered to himself.
The next day, the gang gathered in the library. Willow looked at Buffy, who was staring off into space. "Hey? Buffy?" Startled, Buffy looked at her friend. "Sorry. I kinda...zoned out for a moment, I guess." Willow smiled knowingly.
"Angel trouble?" Buffy took on a mock-offended face.
"No!" A slight pause. "I...I had a weird dream last night."
"Oh. N-not the weird pleasant type, I suppose?" Giles stepped out of his office before Buffy could answer.
"Buffy! Glad you’re here!"
"Yes. That’s something that hardly ever happens." Xander added sarcastically. Giles ignored him.
"Buffy, I’m afraid I have some bad news. Angel came by last night..." Xander let out a pointed sigh. "...and he told me Salem’s back in town."
"Salem?" Buffy echoed. "Great. Just what I needed."
"Angel’s ex-girlfriend Salem?", Willow asked.
"You see, I told you Angel’s trouble. Look at the trash the guy dates!" Willow glared at Xander.
"Now what did I do wrong?!"
"Buffy, we’re going. Obviously Xander hasn’t taken his medication yet." She pulled Xander along, out of the library.
Xander protested. "Come on! The guy’s a major creep!"
"Xander! Sorry, Buffy." Buffy smiled at her friends. She hopped onto the table.
"So, why do you think she’s come back?" Giles pushed his glasses onto his nose.
"I think Xander’s right." Buffy rose her eyebrows.
"She’s back because of Angel? God, obsessed much?" He looked at Buffy sadly.
"This could get ugly, Buffy." She crossed her arms.
"Trust me. I’ll be ready for her."
Kim sighed in frustration. "Can I go kill someone *alone* now?" Salem looked at her.
"You remind me of myself. So young, so eager...But no, not yet. Since that bloody Brotherhood kicked me out, I don’t have really any troops. But..." She flashed a smile at Kim. "...that’s what humans are for, aren’t they?" Kim smirked. "Come on. Put on something nice. Lesson number one: Young blood is best. In order to trap young boys, you have to give them what they want." She gestured at herself. Her usual leather cat-suit had been replaced by a tank top and a pair of tight black pants. "Use their hormones against them. Look good." Kim headed off towards the other room, but Salem stopped her. "Remember, don’t have too many. There’ll be drink where we’re going, and that together with testosterone makes a heady combination. And never use your real name. I’ll wait outside."
James sat lonely at the table. He watched a young girl enter the Bronze. She sauntered towards the bar and ordered a drink. She looked around and walked up to James. With a sexy smile on her face, she said, ":Hi. Mind if I join you?" She didn’t wait for a reply, she just sat down. "I’m Emma. What’s your name?" "Uh, J-James.", he stuttered. Emma smirked.
"Hi, James. So, wanna dance?" She took his hand and led him out onto the dance floor. She moved her hips to the rhythm. "Dance with me, James.", she purred.
"O-okay..." Harmony walked past the couple.
"God, *James*, who died and made *you* Elvis?", she sneered. James blushed. Emma narrowed her eyes and stared at Harmony. She immediately backed off. Emma wrapped her arm around his waist.
"Wow! That was amazing? How’d you do that?" Emma smiled again.
"It’s easy. She’s just jealous." She grabbed his hand. "Come on, let’s go for a walk."
"B-but what about the dance? And our drinks?" Emma continued for the door. She looked back impatiently.
"Are you coming or not?" She disappeared around the corner. James followed her. Looking down the alley, he saw a figure moving towards the shadows.
"Emma?", he called out.
"I’m here...", a voice whispered. The sharp pain in his neck surprised him. Heat spread quickly. ‘Emma’ looked eagerly at her sire. Salem nodded approvingly.
"Good one." She licked her lips. "Mmm. So much better, in LA the blood’s just gross, full of steroids...ick. Now, slash your wrist and drip the blood into his mouth. Her pupil obeyed and gasped at the unfamiliar sensations. "There. Enough. Soon he’ll awake." Kim looked up curiously.
"Is that how you made me?" Salem nodded.
"Yes. Now, I say I take out one more and we head back." She giggled. "I think you’re going to make a great right hand, Kim." Kim beamed at the unexpected praise. "Let’s go. So, do you prefer blond guys or dark?"
Buffy dusted the last vampire. She wiped the sweat off her brow. "Rough night?" She spun around.
"Yeah." She put away her stake. "So, Salem’s back, huh?" Angel nodded slowly.
"Yeah."
"She must really have a thing for you." He frowned.
"Well, she’s come after you already.", she involuntarily shuddered at the assault of memories. Angel cracked his knuckles.
"I think it’s time we dealt with her." Buffy smiled at the ‘we’. "Any plans?"
Angel closed the door to his apartment. He had had more than enough of Salem. He was afraid of what she might do. To Buffy. He groaned. He was really starting to fall for her, and it unnerved him. He stripped and jumped under the shower. Lately he’d started looking at her in a different way. When he’d first seen her, he found her attractive. And annoying. Now he realized she was still so young then. Then after a few months that had changed. She’d become...older. Wiser. Less naive. And then, when Salem had kidnapped them... He closed his eyes as the hot water worked the knots out of his tense muscles. This was not the time to think of his changing feelings. His immediate concern was keeping Salem away from Buffy and her friends. Even that irritating Xander boy. He felt that Xander too was thinking of Buffy. Angel wondered for not the first time about Buffy’s relationship with him. A spark of jealousy jolted through him when he thought of how Xander got to share Buffy’s life. It was ridiculous. A 241-year old vampire being jealous of a high school kid. Just as ridiculous as a vampire in lo...He sighed and shut off the water. Angel quickly dressed and thought about his best course of action. His eyes fell on a small slip of paper on his desk. He cursed.
It read: "Hey, lover. Miss me much? We should really get together for old times’ sake. I know you weren’t completely acting four months ago. See you later."
He could smell the blood of the stains her lips had made when she’d kissed the paper. She knew him too well.
Salem looked at the vampires standing in front of her. Some new, some loyal Brothers who had decided to follow her out to Sunnydale instead of listening to the new Sire. "I’m proud of you.", she said. "You who have not forsaken me! And of those of you, who are new. I know you will give your lives to protect you. Follow me and feast every night, leave me and die." She glanced at her protégé. Kim curtly nodded at her and dismissed them. She approached Salem.
"Salem? What do you think?" Salem smirked.
"Thirteen. Not bad. Small, but powerful." She patted the other’s shoulder. "And soon, with Angel again by my side, we will be even more powerful!" She stepped into a room. Kim followed.
"I’m glad we moved. I like musty old places and all, but this has *space*." Her sire nodded.
"Gotta love Crawford Street. So, Dalton? How’s the research coming?" The vampire sitting at the desk looked up.
"I found a way to perform the ritual without the sire’s blood. All we’ll need is the Slayer." Salem beamed.
"Good! Good! I’m proud of you!" She narrowed her eyes. "I hate that bitch. *Darla*. Arrogant little *slut*. Damn fine taste in men though, I’ll give her that!"
She clapped in her hands. "I’m hungry. Who wants to go out for a snack? Sean? Robert?"
Buffy sighed. "Here, vampire! I have a little surprise for you!" Nothing. She whined. "Man! They always show up when you don’t want them to, but when you do, they’re nowhere to be found! How typical!" She heard a sound. "Ooh, goody!" She raised her stake in anticipation. "Oh. It’s you."
"Hey, Buffy."
"Funny. We always meet like this, with me holding up a stake." Buffy sighed again. "I’m so bored! Nothing tonight!"
"No sign of Salem at all?" She shook her head.
"No."
"Oh."
Suspicious, she asked, "Why? Were you expecting her to show?" Angel didn’t answer.
"Angel?" "Sorry. It’s just...I was sure she’d turn up tonight."
"Well, I guess she stood you up.", she snapped. Angel set his jaw.
"Okay. If you’re going to be like this, see you later." He left. She stood there for a moment.
"Hey! Angel! Wait up!" She followed him, but when she stood in the middle of the narrow street, she realized she was alone. "Missed career opportunity number one: disappearing act." She grimaced and headed for the Bronze, hoping for some real vamp action. Buffy never saw the empty injection needle.
Salem skipped to the bed in which her former lover lay. She climbed in beside him, resting her head on his shoulder. "Leave us!", she called to the guard. She sighed contentedly. "Ah, Angel. How I’ve missed you. She raised her head slightly to look at him. Her gaze traveled down his face to his lips. "Hmm...", she smiled. Gently, she planted a soft kiss there. She lost control at the familiar feel of his lips and started roving his mouth. "Mmm..." With a gasp, she sat up. "You know, Angel...", she said, stroking his face, "You’re great when you’re unconscious." Kim burst in. Irritated, Salem looked up. "What?!"
"If you can tear yourself away from your boy-toy for a minute, I’d like to talk to you." Groaning and muttering something about "the impatience of the youth", she gave up her spot at Angel’s side and followed Kim out into the hallway.
"What is it?", she asked.
"It’s that Slayer. She went over to the Bronze and got Timothy and Martin."
"Well, then they’re fools. What about ‘new arrivals’?"
"B-but...aren’t you going to do something about that girl?" Salem heaved a sigh.
"Of course I am! I’m not demented you know! Gods! I can just feel the trust coming off of you in waves!" She leaned closer. "*I* am exacting my vengeance on her in a *sophisticated* way. I’m not just going to rip her head off and suck her dry!" She chuckled. "Though that would be fun...I am going to kill her from the inside. After all, how would you feel spending your last moment on Earth watching your ‘crush’ turn to evil again and taking his rightful place at your archenemy’s side?" Kim smiled.
"Of course! What a wonderful plan!" Salem’s grin faltered.
"I know. And you would do well not to disturb me and Angel for these trivial problems anymore." Kim kneeled.
"I am sorry. You are my sire, my mistress, I live only to serve you."
"Remember that!", Salem growled. Kim stood up, looking at the floor. "Now,", Salem continued friendly, "How many new ones?"
"Five, as far as I can tell.", Willow answered, gaze fixed on her computer screen.
"Salem’s gathering troops...", Giles said, frowning. Buffy aimed the crossbow and fired.
"Bulls-eye. So, Buffy, Dead Boy show up yesterday?", Xander asked innocently. Buffy looked sheepish.
"Actually we kind of got into a fight. I haven’t heard from him since. Maybe I should..."
"No! No!", Xander interrupted, "Forget I asked! He’s probably...doing whatever vampires do when they’re sulking." Buffy laughed as an unbidden image of a pouting Angel entered her mind.
"Probably. I bet he thinks I’m jealous of Salem or something!" She laughed again. "That is one of his major less-lovable qualities. The guy jumps to concl-" Xander, looking hurt, left, stammering a lame excuse about "getting a soda". Giles looked at Buffy intently.
"Buffy. Do you love him?"
"What?!", she laughed nervously, just realizing her Freudian slip. "No! Well...No! Of course not! That’s ridiculous!" She fled the room. Willow glanced at Giles sadly.
Buffy crossed the street. She was on her way to Angel’s. Nevertheless, she was becoming very worried. , she told herself. But something inside her told her something was very wrong. She felt it was connected to her dream. She flashed back. Angel, bound to some sort of altar. A knife, casting an eerie reflection, slicing through the air. And blood...blood everywhere. She told herself she was being stupid. But when she knocked and no answer came, terror gripped her heart. Something was wrong. And it was her fault. Again. She kicked in the door. Angel was gone. Hastily, she returned to where she’d last seen him. When she heard a slight crunch under her foot, she looked down. There were the remnants of an empty injection needle. Salem’s trade mark. She cursed her stupidity again and hurried home. Giles needed to know. He would be able to help her. She hoped.
The doorbell rang. Giles abandoned his cup of tea and went to answer the door. A pale, panting Buffy stormed in. "Giles!" He quickly led her to the sofa.
"Sit down, Buffy. What’s wrong?"
"Giles! I’ve been so stupid! God!" He got up and got her a glass of water which she eagerly gulped down.
"I...I went to Angel’s apartment. It was empty. He wasn’t there. A couple of days ago, I dreamt of him, tied to an altar, a knife and blood. A ritual. I dismissed it, but now...I ran back to where I’d last seen him, and I found a broken injection needle. The same thing Salem used when she kidnapped me. She took him, Giles, again! I should have known! God!" She collapsed into sobs. "I-I don’t know where he is! They could be anywhere!" Giles looked thoughtful.
"Well, they’re probably at a big house, large enough for at least fifteen people. It would have to be far away from other houses..." Buffy’s head shot up.
"Crawford Street!"
"Hm?" "Crawford Street! That’s where they are! Xander showed me the mansions there once! Big, lonely, the works! They’re there, Giles, I know it." She stood up. "Let’s go." Giles pushed her back down.
"Buffy! You’re behaving most irrationally! It’s about..." He checked his watch. "Midnight now. You will go in the morning, when they sleep."
"No! Have to go now!", she protested. Giles sighed.
"Buffy. Salem is not going to hurt Angel. She’s...she’s quite...enamored with him, if I remember correctly. You’ll go tomorrow. With backup." Buffy looked as though she was getting ready to argue, but Giles quickly added, "Salem is strong, Buffy. She has troops. Loyal troops. You saw her, you know what she’s like! Go home, get some sleep. We’ll talk about this at school tomorrow." He showed her to the door. Before she left, he touched her shoulder. "I’m sure he’s fine." Buffy smiled.
"Thanks, Giles." She left. Giles leaned against the closed door.
"I hope so." He had done some reading on Angelus. "By God, I hope so, Buffy."
"No, Giles! We have to do something now!" Buffy paced the room, furious.
"What do you intend to do? Do you have a plan?" Buffy stopped mid-stride and looked up at Giles.
"Yes. I say I’m sick, go home, grab my stuff, head over to that mansion, stake the vamps, rescue Angel, go home and study for my History test."
"Buffy! Who knows how many men she has by now?! I say we come with you." Willow nodded.
Xander added, "It’s the best way, Buffy. We can distract them." Buffy sighed.
"I can’t protect you guys! What if..."
"Oh come on, Buffy. "What if...", yeah, sure you can say that, but what if you get yourself killed?", Xander interrupted.
"We’re coming and that’s that.", Willow said with a resolved look on her face.
"Here here.", Giles added. Buffy looked at her friends.
"I can see I can’t keep you here. And if I go alone, you’ll probably follow me anyway, right?"
"Yes.", the three answered simultaneously. She sighed again.
"Okay. Take a stake and a cross. And try to stay out of trouble."
Angel jerked at the cables that kept his wrists in place against the post. "Salem!", he shouted. "SALEM!!!" He knew she had to be behind this. A new girl, one he hadn’t seen before came in. She nodded at the guard.
"Leave us." She turned towards Angel, with a sweet smile on her face. "Hello, Angel. I’m Kim. So, are you comfy?"
"Oh, it’s great. You know, there are times when I’ve really missed being chained up with bitches like you keeping me captive." Kim laughed.
"Oh come on! From what Salem’s told me, you don’t really mind..." She came closer, leaning into him. "In fact, from what she’s told me about you, I’d say..."
"Kim!", a voice sounded through the room. Salem strode towards Angel. "Stay away from him. He’s mine!", she hissed. Kim backed off, holding up her hands.
"Geez, bite my head off."
"Go find someone else to ‘fulfill your needs’." Kim stepped back, pouting.
"I just wanted to have a little fun with him!" Salem jerked her head towards the door.
"Leave!" After Kim’d gone, she looked at Angel. "I’m sorry, sweet. She still has a lot to learn." She slid her hand down his chest. "Good news, lover! We found a spell! Now we can be together again!" She giggled. "If you let me go, I’ll stay with you." Salem went red with anger. She slapped him hard across his face. "Do you really think I’d fall for that?!", she spat out. Angel did his best to shrug.
"Worked last time."
"Bastard!" She softened and kissed his reddened cheek. "Sorry about that. It’s just...you don’t just spend decades with someone, and then just forget about them." She smirked. "And you, my love, still know how to press my buttons. I’m impressed. So, how’s your little girlfriend *Buffy*?" Angel’s head shot up.
"She’s not my girlfriend!" Salem laughed slowly.
"Come on, Angel. I’ve seen the way you at her. The way you looked at me once. And the way you’ll look at me again, after dear Buffy shows up."
"Leave her out of this!" Salem thought for a moment.
"Hm...No!" She chuckled. "Still overprotective as always."
"She doesn’t even know I’m here, Salem."
"Oh, come on, didn’t think I thought of that?! No, no, I made sure she’d eventually figure out where my super secret hide-out is." She breathed into his ear. "Frankly I don’t care how long she takes. In fact, the later, the better, as far as I’m concerned..."
The late afternoon reflected off Buffy’s necklace. "Okay, guys,", she whispered. "Show time!" She walked up to the door and knocked. Xander gave her a look. She smiled triumphantly when it opened, a vampire hiding in the shadows.
"What?", he growled.
"Hi! I’m Buffy! Would you like to buy some cookies?" The vampire shook his head and moved to close the door. Buffy quickly stuck her foot in. "They’re very special! They’re stake cookies! See, they’re shaped like little stakes!" Before the vampire could react, she had rammed her stake into his chest. "One down, ten or so to go!" At a safe distance, the gang followed her inside. After dusting four more vampires in the hallway, they came onto a huge door, carved with intricate designs. "This must be it." Buffy kicked in the door. Five vampires looked up. "Oh, I’m sorry, I was looking for the bathroom!" Buffy grinned and the first one attacked. A roundhouse kick and she was down. Buffy swiftly dusted her and moved onto the next. "Number two please!" She ducked the attack and he hit the wall. Buffy winced. "Ouch. That’s gotta hurt." She plunged the stake into his heart.
"Buffy! Help!", Xander shouted. Two vampires had driven his into a corner.
"It’s okay, we got it!", Willow shouted. She and Giles ran up to the vampires and staked them. Buffy raised her eyebrows, ducking a punch from her opponent.
"I’m impressed." She staked him too. The gang stopped. The room was empty.
"Whew.", Xander panted. "Who needs drugs when you’re friend of the Slayer?"
"Very good work, Buffy, Willow."
"Hey!"
"You did great, Xander." Buffy said quickly. She marched towards another door and pulled it open. "Angel!", Buffy gasped, seeing him tied up. Salem looked up with a beaming smile on her face.
"Buffy! So good of you to stop by!" She snapped her fingers. "Kim! Get her little friends, will you?" Willow looked at the other girl in horror.
"Kim Cooper? B-but y-you’re in my English class!" Kim growled at them.
"Not anymore, I guess.", Xander said. Salem looked at the vampire who was standing near Angel.
"Dalton, there’s the Slayer, here’s a knife, go get her blood."
"B-but...", he sputtered. "Don’t be such a wimp. She’s not gonna hurt you, are you, Buffy?" She pushed Dalton in Buffy’s direction. "Go on."
"Um...sorry..." He moved to make a cut in her arm. Buffy backhanded him and he slumped to the floor.
"No problem. You know what your problem is, Salem?", she said, slowly moving towards her. Salem looked at her, not the least bit concerned.
"No. What? Pray tell."
"You make other people do your dirty work too much." She lunged at Salem.
"No!", Kim cried out and leaped in front of her sire. She looked surprised when the stake hit her. "S-salem?" She burst into ashes. Salem roared.
"You *bitch*! She was my favorite! We were going to terrorize Sunnydale together, go to the mall! Kill! Shop!" Salem landed a kick on Buffy’s face who staggered back. Growling, she stalked towards Willow and the others, frozen in shock. Buffy got up.
"No!’, she shouted.
"Yes!", Salem grinned. Suddenly, a vase was brought down hard on her head. Everyone looked up at Xander.
"At least it wasn’t new.", he wisecracked. Buffy sighed.
"Let’s get out of here before she comes to."
"Aren’t you going to...", Giles asked. Buffy looked at Salem’s motionless body for a moment and shrugged.
"Nah. Not worth the trouble." She blinked and looked at Angel again.
"God, I’m sorry.", she said softly, tugging at the cable. She deftly untied him and he leaned on her. Giles and the rest chose that moment to leave the room. "Come on. Let’s get you out of here. She didn’t hurt you, did she?", concern lacing her voice.
"I-it’s just the drugs."
Buffy laughed. "Trust me, I’ve been there." He faltered for a moment and she gripped him tightly, her face inches away from his. Her gaze was drawn to his lips. < I understand Salem now. > She mentally shook herself. "Come on, partner." Together they walked out of the room.
"Hey.", Angel said softly. Buffy whirled around and smiled up at him.
"Hey. Feeling better?" He chucked.
"That was the worst hangover I’ve ever had." She cocked an eyebrow.
"Really?" He nodded. "I never figured you for the hang-over type..."
"There are a lot of things about me you don’t know, Buffy."
"Like what?"
Hesitation filled his soft eyes. Uncertain, he brushed his lips to hers. She pulled back after a moment, savoring the sight of him, slightly flushed, eyes closed. Warmth flooded her heart. Angel’s eyes snapped open.
"I-I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have..." Buffy silenced him with a passionate kiss.
They broke apart and she whispered, "Let’s not reason, let us just have this..." They kissed again and fire sparked between them. "Oh, Angel...I...", she sighed as he held her. He planted a soft kiss in her hair.
"I know. I know."
On the cold floor, Salem stirred. She climbed to her feet unsteadily and screamed. "Dammit! The bitch did it again!" She rammed her fist into the wall, leaving a gaping hole. Calmed lightly, she sat down on the floor. "Reinforcements.", she spoke softly. "That’s what I need. And allies." She nodded to herself. "Allies." Salem looked up at the place Angel had been. "I’ll get him back. And I’ll get back at her." She laughed. "After all, tomorrow *is* another day."
