Part Eight

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Hello?" Cordelia tryed again. "Are you...there?"

"Willow never came to the library?" Angel asked confused. "But she-"

"Do I look like a record keeper....not that you could tell....because I'm on the phone, but-"

"Cordelia, get Giles. Now," he said slowly.

"Well, don't you even want to talk to 'me'?"

"Cordelia-"

"Okay, okay. Hold on."

"Angel," recited an accent that was no doubt British. "What is it?"

"It's here with us," he whispered.

"The...the monster?" Giles asked him, clearly surprised.

Buffy grabbed the phone from within Angel's grasp. "Get over here now. Or there is going to be one dead slayer...real soon. It's Willow, Giles."

"You're sure?"

"No, I'm not. That's why I'm telling you-"

"Guys. Is everything alright?" Willow approached the two of them and offered a bright smile.

"Sure," Buffy told her. "We're just great."

"Is....is that Giles?" she questioned.

"Yeah," Angel said softly. "He claims you never made it to the library."

"Well," she said laughing. "You know. What can I say? It was a good scheme while it lasted." The voice wasn't Willow's anymore. Suddenly, it almost appeared to break loose from her form. Willow's head tilted back and a transparent shape arose. Its eyes were sunken hollow holes, its mouth curled back in a self-satisfied smile. It was what Buffy would've easily classified as a genie, only this was something of a pure evil upbringing.

"You shall have your friend back now. But shortly...I shall claim all of you. It's only a matter of time. And you-" It looked at Angel, almost mocking him. "You shall be dead and I shall take your soul from you. But Angelus.....you aren't like the other vampires, are you? So it may take some time. You're almost human. So...I have chosen a human method of torture for you. You will never find me once I leave, so beware....look around every corner. You never know where I'll be. Guard your lives with value."

And it was gone. Willow's fragile frame slumped to the floor. "So she released it," Buffy told him.

Angel nodded and grabbed a hold of the wall to steady himself. His face stood expressionless. Willow opened her eyes. "M...m...mom?" she called.

"No. It's me Will. C'mon, let's get you home. And....we have to get to Giles somehow." She looked at the good vampire. "Are you coming?"

"Do I have a choice? It'll be coming for me soon. I can't stay here anymore."

"Okay. Look. You can take up room at my house. Mom's at another one of her conventions for promoting the gallery-"

"Buffy. I don't want to get you in any trouble. I'll just stay with Xander-"

"Xander and you don't go together. There'd be a fight in seconds. Just listen to me and hurry before the sun comes up."

Giles put down the phone, clearly seeing that no one was ever going to pick it up again. His face went pale. "It probably finished them off by now....and we're just sitting here like idiots. Not doing anything-"

"I'm sure they'll be fine," Ms. Calendar assured him. "Buffy has help, Rupert. She should do just fine."

"But it was after him. And Willow....." his voice grew lighter and trailed off.

"Angel didn't want to talk to me," whined Cordelia, as her eyes began to dim.

"Will you snap out of it!!!" Giles demanded. "There is a thing called work, Cordelia. And as hard as that may be for you to understand, it must be done. Before....before we allow fuzzy thoughts to enter our conscience and cloud our judgement."

"Wow. That completed my day at school," Xander commented.

"School has long been over, dorkhead," Cordelia told him rudely. "So...what can we do to help? I mean, we don't even know where they are now."

"Correct. But chances are, if they had survived, they'd be headed over to Buffy's. Possibly Willow's. I want you to go with Xander to Buffy's house, Cordelia. Jenny and I will go to Willow's." Giles reached to a nearby hook for his coat.

"Split up?" Cordelia moaned. "But why? I can't stand being around him for even two minutes," she complained.

"I really feel better," came Xander's usual sarcastic response. "But I do get a free ride, which makes it suddenly seem painless."

"You are not getting in my car," she told him. "I don't give lifts to losers."

"That's enough," Giles told them. "Buffy needs our help. And we're going to give it to her. Standing around arguing isn't going to get us anywhere. Now c'mon."

"There he goes again," Cordelia frowned. "I still can't believe I allow myself to-"

"Have you ever been nice to anyone?" Xander asked her, as the two of them walked out together. "Besides your usual wandering Cordette I mean?"
