I don't own anything but the story. Joss Whedon and the WB own everything else...

Part One

Buffy Summers looked at her best friend in shock. "Will. Don't tell me you still haven't told him?"

Willow Rosenberg nodded meekly. "Well, in the sense of thought yes. In the literal sense...no."

"What are you waiting for? Xander can't read minds. Unless, I don't think he-"

Just then, as if on cue, Xander Harris strolled by, meeting up with his two favorite girls. "Hey ladies. Anything new, please share. In case you're wondering, I just got through voting myself the most stupid person alive."

"Guess you know yourself better than you think," Cordelia Chase offered as she strutted by, a group of her wannabe friends tagging along behind her.

"Oh, that was good," Xander muttered to himself. "How come it's those kind of people who ponder up good insults?"

"Xander, Cordelia naturally comes with them. It's part of the 'I'm a snob, I'm too good for you package'. In her case, refunds are extinct. She's gone way past her limit." Buffy said this casually, persuading her friend to see the truth and joking in the process.

Xander moped about it a couple of seconds. Willow shot him a pretty smile. "Are we going to The Bronze tonight?"

"I think I'll avoid danger prophecies and go for the mall. A total change of scenery," Buffy replied for him. "Whatdya say Xander?"

The adorable young man slowly nodded. "Yeah. It works for me. fast food still in?" He considered this a moment. "Oh wait. That's easy. I completely renounce the second opinion. Do they still have those little prizes at Taco bell?"

Willow laughed. "Looks like the real Xander is coming back."

"Did I go somewhere?" he asked defiantly.

"Sarcasim," Buffy offered.

"Oh. Right. I should have known. Wherever it lurks, you'll find me."

"Don't we know it," Willow told him. "Xander? Do you need help with the trig for Monday?"

"Oh. I've taken care of that. Giles has let me rent one of his books." Xander smiled and proudly held up and old musty volume. "Theories in trig. it will so make my pathetic life easier."

"You don't have a pathetic life," Buffy told him.

"Worse, I'm just a torn page in a storybook. You know, you see it there, but don't read it cuz it's messy, wrinkled. Like my image."

"Cheer up, Xander. We've got a whole weekend ahead of us. Well, then....there is slaying...."

"For each generation, there is but one slayer, blah, blah, blah," Xander mocked. "How can Giles be so into it? I swear he must've written a book or something. Funny how it never made it to the credit line, better yet, bestsellers list."

"Don't be so hard on him," Willow argued. "He's just doing his job."

"And is very good at it," Xander interrupted as Giles suddenly came up behind her. The librarian was from England and was rather dull. The only one who could see eye to eye with him was (big surprise) Willow. Xander could just see it now. Willow as the next watcher, her name printed big in the headlines. She has got to get a life, he told himself mentally. Outloud, he cleared his throat. "What's up, G-man?"

"xander, how many times have I told you not to call me that? Too many, I believe. Don't you teenagers, excuse me, you young people ever do anything else?"

"It's social hour," Buffy explained. "It is our duty to successfully mingle."

"So I see," Giles was so not amused.

"By the way, I'm retiring tonight. I was called to a mall gathering and fully intend to take full responsibility for my shopping habits."

Giles raised an eyebrow. "Well. I'm sorry to disrupt your plans, but you have to be on the look out this very night."

"What is it this time?" Buffy crossed her arms over her chest.

"Vampires," Giles said seriously and with a brief tone of anger.

"I knew that one," Xander added, obviously overjoyed with himself.

"Angel has told me that something, neither of us are sure what, is in progress. They're gathering forces as we speak. We must act accordingly."

"Angel," Xander muttered, obviously jealous of Buffy's affection for him. "What's the deal with that guy? Hey, you know what I think?"

"What?" Willow asked, always interested in her friend's opinions.

"I think he needs parents. I mean, my mom is always there when I'm in need of Chinese. Although, there was that time Dad tried to-"

"Sell you to the Armenians, we know," Buffy cut him off. "Look Giles. Whatever it is, will have to wait. I'm going with Xander and Willow and that's the end of it."

"Since when do you defy the watcher's guidelines, Buffy? I'm ordering you to do something and you're going to do it. I'll expect you at the graveyard at nine. Afterall, you are the chosen one."

"Yeah, and I choose to visit the mall," the slayer replied.

Giles frowned and glanced at Willow. "Talk some sense into her." Carrying an ancient novel in his grasp, he nervously hurried away.

Xander let out a soft whistle. "He means business Buff. I think you should obide."

"Is it Angel?" Willow asked softly.

"Will. Angel has nothing to do with this. I just want to have a normal life for once, okay?"

"I can understand that," Xander agreed. "But in order for me to accomplish my task, Cordy will have to go somewhere that's away. Far away..."

"So, what are you going to do?" Willow looked at Buffy, an expression of worry crossing her brow.

"What any 'normal' girl would do. I'm hitting the large building with all the clothes."

Xander smiled. "What time should I pick you up?"

"Nine," Buffy decided. "Will, meet me at my house at eight. We have some serious outfit pondering we need to cover."

"You got it," Willow said.

"What? Don't I get to ponder?"

"Xander. You're not a girl. Which sadly means you're excluded. Sorry."

"Oh. Hey. I can live with that. Sure. I'm not a girl. Right." His expression dropped.

"Well gang. Until nine then?"

"Great," Xander and Willow replied in unison.

Buffy walked off, leaving her two friends behind. Despite her previous mode of happiness, she couldn't shake off Giles' warning. What if something strikes and I'm not there? And what if it isn't a vampire this time...
