Lying in bed upon her lace pillows, Buffy held the golden chain up in front of her eyes. Pondering intently about what Whistler had said to her about Angel. For some strange reason she felt a connection to the small trinket as if she had seen it before, like a lost or old memory.

“Could he really be telling the truth?” Buffy asked herself aloud.

Slipping the chain around her neck, she began to feel a slight tingly sensation. She felt her eyes get heavy and begin to droop. As Buffy Summers fell asleep, she could not possibly have known what was held in store for her in her dreams and what truths would be revealed.

County Cork Ireland, 1753

As Buffy’s dream begins, she is taken to a place long ago. Long before she came to Sunnydale and long before she became the chosen one. A place where she was a normal girl, a girl with a dream. A girl who wanted freedom, independence, and true love. As Buffy opened her eyes, she saw before her a young woman who could pass for her twin. Confused, Buffy thought of how she had gotten to where she stood. She remembered going to sleep in her own bed and quickly remembered Whistler. She looked down at the fair ring hanging around her neck.

“This feels to real to be a dream.” Buffy thought to herself.

A quick glance around revealed that Buffy was in some sort of basement, a very large basement. It looked to be some sort of servant quarters; baskets of vegetables crowded a large oak table. There was no bed to be seen and only the chair by the fireplace. A pitcher and basin laid by a back door that appeared to lead out into a garden. As early morning crept in, the girl is fast asleep in a chair by the fireplace. The only light that remains is few glowing embers. Buffy stared in shock as her sleeping doppelganger dreamt on, dressed in a natural green dress with an apron tied firmly around her waist. She had long blonde hair, which looked as if it went down to the small of her back. Even as she slept on, her ash stained face seemed tired. Suddenly there was a cry. A name is being shouted from the upstairs.

“Shannon!” A shrill voice cried.

The young girl in the rocking chair instantly wakes up and snaps to attention. Fearing that she might be spotted Buffy tried to hide but unfortunately, there is no place that could conceal her. Ironically as the look-alike scrambles up she doesn’t seem to notice Buffy as she runs to the basin and quickly splashes water in her face. Buffy walks to Shannon’s side and waves her hand in front of her face. There is no response or notice from the rushed young woman. Feeling a little more daring, Buffy tried to touch her. Her hand proceeded to pass though Shannon as if Buffy were a ghost. Her final test to check her Casper like abilities Buffy yelled, “Boo!” in Shannon’s ear. There was no response and Buffy remained undetected by the servant girl.

“Shannon!” The same voice bellowed again.

Looking up from the basin quickly, Shannon responds,

“Coming Step-Mother!”

As if in a blind panic the young girl hurries up the stairs out of the basement to heed her stepmother’s calls. Quickly as Shannon did Buffy raced up the stair well determined to find out more about her supposed past life. Buffy remained on Shannon’s heels as she races though the large mansion and through two large wooden doors. Buffy entered the room to find that it was a very spacious bedroom with a equally spacious and fanciful bed to match. Sitting up in the bed was older woman who Buffy assumed to be Shannon’s Stepmother. The woman regarded the girl coldly. Buffy can automatically tell that this woman cannot be good news and already she cannot stand her.

“Yes Stepmother, you called?” Shannon says with a half smile and a courtesy.

“Insolent girl! I did not beckon you for mere conversation. Hurry now and get breakfast ready. I believe my daughters and I would like breakfast served in bed this fine morning. Is that understood?”

“Yes Stepmother, right away.” said Shannon as she turned to leave hanging her head slightly with embarrassment at her foolishness.

“Oh and Shannon? Do try to hurry, there is much work to be done about the manor today and I would like it all done by dinnertime. Now hurry along.” Said the stepmother quite menacingly as her stepdaughter exited the room rather sheepishly.

Buffy followed Shannon quickly, outraged at how the evil woman had treated the poor, young servant girl.

“I’d give her a breakfast to remember that’s for sure!” Buffy said out loud through clenched teeth.
