The shrill ringing of the morning bell broke Buffy Summers from her deep ponderings. She noticed that the teacher had begun writing on the board, but that wasn't really what Buffy was thinking about. She was focused instead on the rippling leather-covered muscles and the smell of freshly soaped man flesh. She was thinking about the gelled, spiked brown hair that sat directly in front of her. She was thinking about him, and that was more than enough to occupy her brain.
He was a senior, big football star . . . not to mention a total babe. His name was Angel, an interesting name to say the least. He had transferred to Sunnydale High school three weeks earlier, and Buffy shared three classes with him. Needless to say, her grades in those three classes were taking a nosedive. But her eyes never lacked exercise. Now if only she had the nerve to speak to him.
She pulled her eyes away from Angel just long enough to scan the room for her best buddies. Xander Harris sat next to her, smacking the chewing gum that rolled around in his mouth.
"Hiya, Buff. What's it like where you are?" he quipped to his friend, smiling at her to let her know that all was in good fun.
"Foggy with a 100% chance of boring history class," she returned. Not her best comeback, but her mind was still stuck over that rippling leather.
She noticed that Willow Rosenberg's chair was empty, which was a rare sight. Willow loved school at an unnatural level. Buffy was certain that if Willow missed a day, the apocalypse was coming. Nothing left to do now but batten down the hatches, or maybe call her friend from the cafeteria payphone.
"Um, hello? Buffy, isn't it?" came a voice from in front of her. Where the rippling leather and muscles lived. She turned her focus forward and met chocolate brown eyes.
"I...um...Yes?" she replied. Get it together, girl. But this is....Angel.
"I'm Angel." he said to the hazel deer-in-the-headlights eyes that met his.
"I know...I mean...hi." she smiled weakly. Stupid! Say smart things! Or at least try. "What's up?" she tried, hoping to sound casual, but the shaking in her voice gave her away.
"I just wanted to say hi. We've been in the same class for a few weeks now, and it occurred to me that I hadn't introduced myself," he smiled to her, trying to reassure her that he wouldn't bite.
"Yeah. Hi," she returned, trying to sound cool. "I'm Buffy...but..you seem to already know that."
He smiled at her again, not looking away until a voice from the front of the class broke the spell.
"All right, all right. Settle down."
Angel turned in his seat and focused on the grumpy man at the front of the class. He smiled to himself, thinking about the girl behind him. Her bright smile etched itself into his brain, and he couldn't help but smile himself.
