*****Chapter One - The Mystery Of The White Chronicles*****

‘White Chronicle’s?’ Willow asked. ‘As in, like the Black Chronicle’s…but white?’

‘Indeed. The White Chronicle’s were started at about the same time as the Black Chronicle’s. A Spanish priest wrote them…he was a poor man who lived alone in the county. It was said that his dreams were plagued with vampires and demons and the like. He made predictions on everything that would happen, apocalypses and such. He was like Nostradumus I suppose, except he was only ever ‘published’ in this.’

‘But what exactly is *this*?’ Xander asked.

‘Well, it contains some of the most powerful curse remedies and solutions ever written…taken mainly from those who wrote the curses. The priest used to hunt down those who put curses upon people and attempt to collect or make a reverse of the curse. He wrote them all down in here.’ Willow stared at the book in awe; she began to turn over several pages carefully. ‘The book was never finished, and it never kept up with the Black Chronicle’s as the priest died before he could finish it. After his death the book was seized by the council. It was bound in human skin to…’

‘Eeeewww!’ Willow let go of the pages suddenly. ‘Human skin? Didn’t they have cows in those days…or just paper?’

‘The human skin was necessary. In particular it was the white skin of a virgin…to keep the book holy and pure. After it was closed it was decided that it would never be opened again…unless there was a real emergency, and it would be needed. There is too much power in this book to use it foolishly.’

‘Which is why I suggest you close it and put it back in the box and…how did you get hold of it anyway?’ Wesley seemed annoyed that he hadn’t been fully informed.

‘When I came to the Hellmouth to Watch over Buffy the Watchers council sent it to me. They decided that as the Hellmouth was such a dangerous place…an epicentre for the paranormal as it were…it would be most useful here. But they told me never to open it.’

‘But you did, which is why I’m going to report you to the council.’ He turned to head for Giles’ office phone. Giles grabbed his arm roughly.

‘For heavens sake man!’ He hissed. ‘This is a real emergency…do you know what the Mayors ascension could mean for us? For the world? Death Wesley, total annihilation. Is that what you want for the sake of a little rule bending.’ Wesley was speechless, but nodded. Giles released his arm. ‘Now, I think I’ve found what we need.’ Giles said, turning back to the book and locating the necessary page.

‘So, boss, when do we get this over with?’ Faith asked the Mayor.

‘Soon.’ He swung his golf club and again missed the ball. He sighed. ‘I’m hoping that afterwards my game will improve. I’ve been so put off these last few days…what with the slayer and that two-faced Angelus.’ As he said Angel’s name he swung again and hit the ball with such force that it broke a window. ‘Much better. Now, are you going to do me that favour you promised me?’

‘Favour?’ Faith raised an eyebrow and gave him a “like hell I did” look.

‘Yes, the one where you swore to kill Angelus and the slayer, and her little gang of interfering do-gooders.’ He swung again and hit the ball. ‘Woo! A whole in one!’ He turned to faith and grinned. ‘There’s a big reward if you do it for me.’

‘Oh, that favour.’ She sidled up to him and smiled at the mention of a reward.

‘I knew you wouldn’t forget.’ He chuckled. ‘Now, your shot…beat that.’ Faith shrugged and took position with her club. She wondered if she was doing the right thing…for about the fiftieth time. The memory of her encounter with Buffy and Angel was still painful. She’d been so sure that she was doing the right thing, that she’d joined the winning team for once…but to be rejected like that, by both of them, hurt more than she could've believed possible.

She had been asking her self “What if?” since that night. She was sure it was worth it…money, nice apartment, generous (although quite peculiar) boss and a foot in the door when it came to the big plans. The mayor had told her that he liked the way she thought…he liked the way she thought…an actual praise, not like anything she’d have got from Wesley or Giles. The thought of them made her feel a weird mixture of hate and guilt, like her blood was boiling at the thought of what she'd done to them...but at the same time all she could see was their faces as they told her what they really thought of her. She felt that familiar anger rising, and missed her shot.

‘Okay, so, we have a plan.’ Buffy announced to the group. ‘We can’t exactly make the Mayor a mortal human, but we can kill him. And the sooner the better, all agreed?’

‘Agreed.’ Came the unanimous reply…unanimous but for Cordelia, who had been sitting in quiet observation throughout the details of the plan. Whether she was observing the plan or Wesley was debatable.

‘Cordelia? Are you in?’ Buffy asked.

‘Well…I don’t know…I guess I could, I mean…do I get to use a cross bow?’

‘Um, well…you don’t really know how to…’ Buffy began, then Wesley interrupted her.

‘I’ll teach her how to use it.’ He said, smiling nervously at Cordelia.

‘I’m in!’ She said excitedly. ‘I mean, if you really need me.’

‘We never needed you.’ Xander sniped. Everyone gave him a look; he’d gone a little too far with his insults. Cordelia wasn’t phased. She smiled sweetly at Wesley and picked up a crossbow.

‘Great. A full team for a full plan.’ Buffy said, picking up her crossbow. She smiled encouragingly, trying not to show her true feelings.

‘Oooh, I love it when a plan comes together.’ Xander said, rubbing his hands together in mock delight. Altho everyone looked pretty pleased with themselves, no-one seemed very eager to be the first to leave.

‘Well, what are we waiting for…let’s go.’ Buffy announced. Slowly they all stood up and trooped out of the library doors…weapons in hands and Giles carrying the White Chronicle’s.

**********

They headed straight for the Mayors office under the cover of dark. On their way they ran into Angel. Although whether he just happened to be there or not was debatable…but Buffy guessed he’d followed her.

‘Buffy.’ He said as he stepped out of the shadows. Buffy turned away from the others and walked towards him. ‘I thought you might need some help.’

‘From you?’ Her voice was a little stern, and Angel looked nervous for a moment. ‘Sure.’ She added quietly and led him over to the group. ‘Angel’s in too.’ She announced. Xander muttered something about ‘dead-boy’, but Buffy couldn’t make out what it was. She just frowned at him and continued to lead the way…telling Angel the plan as she went.
