Part Three
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"You're really getting into this studying thing lately,” said Willow as she and Buffy exited the library and walked down the corridors of Sunnydale High.
"Yeah, I know. It frightens me too, but it's kind of nice to have something to concentrate on that doesn't bite or maim or kill or..."
"Buffy."
"Sorry."
"I was thinking that we could start with the Murphy text."
"The Murphy text, but we haven't used that one for weeks. I didn't even bring it with me," said Buffy as she halted her friend in front of the exit to the school.
See, that's what the teacher is counting on. He assumes that we'll write off that book because we haven't used it for a while. Then when the exam comes around it's just a faint memory and POW, a possible 100 becomes an automatic 60."
"Wow, you've really thought this through."
"It's survival of the fittest, Buffy. Getting good grades is like going to war."
"Glad I'm not in the enemy camp. I'll go get it.”
“I’ll just wait here."
Willow watched as Buffy walked towards her locker when she realized that there was something around her wrist. “Shoot,” exclaimed Willow as she ran after Buffy.
“Hey Willow, I thought you were going to wait for me at the exit,” said Buffy as her friend caught up to her.
“Yeah, but I forgot to give...that is I have to talk to Xander for a second.”
Buffy fumbled through her locker as Willow walked into the library. She went over to Xander, took off the bracelet she was wearing and gave it to him.
“What’s this?” asked Xander.
“It’s your mother’s birthday present,” answered Willow.
“Willow, you already gave me the bracelet,” answered Xander as he pulled an identical bracelet out of his pocket. “Besides that one’s all beat up.”
Willow brought the two bracelets together and looked at them. “You’re right. But I don’t get it?”
“What do you mean?”
“I don’t have two of these.”
"Oh God, no!" interrupted a familiar voice as Cordelia walked into the library with Amy.
"Cordelia, what a unpleasant surprise!" greeted Xander.
"Oz, please tell me Amy is tutoring you," pleaded Cordelia.
"See, that's the funny thing about getting held back--you generally don't need to work so hard the second time around," replied Oz.
"In that case you're just going to have to leave, Xander," insisted Cordelia. "It's not like you need anything better than a “D” average to wash dishes at the Bronze."
"And it's not as if geometry will help you improve your lap dancing techniques," replied Xander.
"Drop dead."
"You don't know how hard I pray for that when I'm around you."
"Guys!" yelled Amy.
Willow snuck out of the library as the voices of her feuding friends slowly faded from her ears. She met Buffy at her locker and together the two made their way out of the building. Willow started to gently rub the side of her face as they reached the sidewalk.
“What’s wrong?” asked Buffy.
“I don’t know. Feels like I ran into a wall with my face.”
“Ouch. How did that happen?”
“I don’t know. Guess I bumped into something.”
“What was all that noise coming from the library back there, anyway? I was afraid you were under attack by some demons," said Buffy.
"Close. Cordelia is Amy's other tutee for the night."
"Oh, poor Amy! But I guess it's appropriate for the study date from hell to actually happen over the Hellmouth."
"You know, I'm beginning to wonder if anything could ever get those two to tolerate each other again."
"Well, time supposedly heals all wounds right? Maybe we just haven't waited long enough for this one to stop bleeding."
"You're probably right, but let’s not talk about bleeding anymore."
“Good idea.”
In the distance a vampire who had been near the entrance to the school watched the pair walk away. Realizing that the slayer would be too formidable of an opponent for him to take on alone, he walked away to find a meal elsewhere.
